Política de la supervivencia / Politics of Survival
2017
Laughing with machines : philosophical analysis on the preconditions of sense of humour for machines
2021
This article will analyse the preconditions of sense of humour for artificial intelligence. Can artificial intelligence have a sense of humour? Is there a difference between human and machine laughter? Some machines already fulfil certain conditions which are associated with the human sense of humour: on the most superficial level machines appear to laugh and produce jokes, and they recognize sarcasm and punchlines, and they can evaluate funniness. In short, artificial intelligence is already able to recognize humour, and reacts to it accordingly. Furthermore, people laugh with humorous machines. However, it is still uncertain whether artificial intelligence can have a sense of humour or no…
Designing a New Method of Studying Feature-Length Films
2019
Measuring viewers’ experiences of films has become a critical issue for filmmakers because all kinds of audiences now have access to new releases from all over the world. Some approaches have focused on the cognitive level of the experience, while others have emphasized the structure of films. Additionally, some have used quantitative objective methods to examine audience reactions to short film sequences, while others have applied qualitative approaches to study feature-length films. However, an integrated method that combines the features of these approaches is needed. In this article, we describe a new method that combines quantitative and qualitative data to study viewers’ experiences o…
A cultural heritage experience for visually impaired people
2020
Abstract In recent years, we have assisted to an impressive advance of computer vision algorithms, based on image processing and artificial intelligence. Among the many applications of computer vision, in this paper we investigate on the potential impact for enhancing the cultural and physical accessibility of cultural heritage sites. By using a common smartphone as a mediation instrument with the environment, we demonstrate how convolutional networks can be trained for recognizing monuments in the surroundings of the users, thus enabling the possibility of accessing contents associated to the monument itself, or new forms of fruition for visually impaired people. Moreover, computer vision …
A Note on Keys and Keystreams of Chacha20 for Multi-key Channels
2018
In this paper we analyze the keystreams generated by the Chacha20 stream cipher. We also compare these to the ones generated by its predecessor, the RC4 stream cipher. Due to the proposed multi-key channels in the upcoming TLS 1.3 standard we analyze the behavior of the keystream in the boundary case where there is a single bit difference between two keys used for the initiation of the stream cipher algorithms. The goal is to check whether a single bit change in the key has any predictable influence on the bits of the keystream output.
Synthesizing on a reconfigurable chip an autonomous robot image processing system
2003
This paper deals with the implementation, in a high density reconfigurable device, of an entire log-polar image processing system. The log-polar vision reduces the amount of data to be stored and processed, simplifying several vision algorithms and making it possible the implementation of a complete processing system on a single chip. This image processing system is specially appropriated for autonomous robotic navigation, since these platforms have typically power consumption, size and weight restrictions. Furthermore, the image processing algorithms involved are time consuming and many times they have also real-time restrictions. A reconfigurable approach on a single chip combines hardwar…

The Processing of Medical Images: Principles, Main Applications and Perspectives
2013
This chapter provides an introduction to the basic concepts of medical digital image processing. We kept the mathematical complexity of the chapter at a low level so that life science students can understand the underlying principles behind the methods of analysis and computer-assisted diagnosis.

Digital image processing for rapid analysis of differentially expressed transcripts on high-density cDNA arrays.
1999
Usage of filter arrays is becoming increasingly attractive for many research laboratories involved in determination of gene-expression profiles. However, analysis of numerous spots, representing genes or partial gene sequences (ESTs), is still tedious work involving the ordered analysis of vast amounts of numerical tabular data. We present a rapid and efficient method for the visual identification of differentially expressed targets on high-density cDNA filter arrays using standard laboratory equipment and standard software, which is available for free. The method we introduce provides an inexpensive alternative, and no changes in the experimental set up are required. Our results were veri…
