Application of AC and DC magnetic field for surface wave excitation to enhance mass transfer
2020
Abstract Refining the metallic melts and removal of contaminants from the free surface may be sped up by increasing the surface area of mass exchange interface. It is relevant to both the case of volatile impurity evaporation in a vacuum as well as the case of chemical reactions when the continuous crust of reaction products should be interrupted. Previously proposed low-frequency AC magnetic field excitation of intense surface waves is limited by skin-effect. The induced sign-alternating forcing at high dimensionless frequency values becomes dominantly pulsing at considerably higher than unity values, delivering time-averaged stirring without intense surface waves. Superimposing DC magneti…
Optical properties of an exciton bound to an ionized impurity in ZnO/SiO2 quantum dots
2015
Abstract The energy of the ground and the excited states for the exciton and the binding energy of the acceptor–donor exciton complexes ( A − , X ) and ( D + , X ) as a function of the radius for an impurity position located in the center in the spherical ZnO quantum dots (QDs) embedded in a SiO2 matrix are calculated using the effective mass approximation under the diagonalzation matrix technique, including a three-dimensional confinement of carrier in the QD and assuming a finite depth. Numerical results show that the binding energy of the acceptor–donor exciton complexes is very sensitive to the quantum dot size. These results could be particularly helpful since they are closely related …
Optical properties of acceptor–exciton complexes in ZnO/SiO2 quantum dots
2011
Abstract The binding energy E b of the acceptor–exciton complex (A − ,X) as a function of the radius (or of the impurity position of the acceptor) and the normalized oscillator strength of (A − ,X) in spherical ZnO quantum dots (QDs) embedded in a SiO 2 matrix are calculated using the effective-mass approximation under the diagonalzation matrix technique, including a three-dimensional confinement of the carrier in the QD and assuming a finite depth. Numerical results show that the binding energy of the acceptor–exciton complexes is particularly robust when the impurity position of the acceptor is in the center of the ZnO QDs. It has been clearly shown from our calculations that these physic…
Detection of magnetic thin film impurity phases using nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond crystal
2019
We demonstrate the possibility to detect magnetic impurity phases in thin films using magnetic field imaging technique based on a layer of nitrogen-vacancy centers in the diamond lattice. We demonstrate results of magnetic field distributions created by impurity phases as well as mechanical defects on the thin film surface.
Finite range scattering of Ni and Zn impurities in Y-123 thin films
1997
Abstract We investigated YBa 2 (Cu 1− z M z ) 3 O 7-δ (M Ni,Zn) thin films and determined the decrease of T c and the increase of residual resistivity due to Cu-site substitution, taking into account the CuO-chain contributions to the total conductivity. Although Zn suppresses T c stronger than Ni by a factor of 2.3 the increase of resistivity differs only slightly. Furthermore the observed resistivities are too high to be explained within scattering from point-like defects. To reconcile these contradictions, we assumed finite size scattering potentials, which lead to scattering phase shifts δ l of higher angular momebtum l > 0. T c -suppression is discussed qalitatively within this picture.
EPR Study of Gd3+local structure in ScF3crystal with negative thermal expansion coefficient
2015
Zero field splitting (ZFS) of Gd3+ impurity in ScF3 is studied by electron paramagnetic resonance at 77 and 295 K. ZFS parameter b4 values obtained from angular dependence simulations show that regardless of negative thermal expansion in ScF3 temperature dependence of |b4| is similar to other cubic fluoroperovskites. Our analysis of ZFS parameters indicates that the local structure of Gd3+ centres expands positively with temperature.
C-, N-, S-, and Fe-Doped TiO2 and SrTiO3 Nanotubes for Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Water Splitting: Prediction from First Principles
2015
The ground state electronic structure and the formation energies of both TiO2 and SrTiO3 nanotubes (NTs) containing CO, NO, SO, and FeTi substitutional impurities are studied using first-principles calculations. We observe that N and S dopants in TiO2 NTs lead to an enhancement of their visible-light-driven photocatalytic response, thereby increasing their ability to split H2O molecules. The differences between the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied impurity levels inside the band gap (HOIL and LUIL, respectively) are reduced in these defective nanotubes down to 2.4 and 2.5 eV for N and S doping, respectively. The band gap of an NO+SO codoped titania nanotube is narrowed down to 2.2 eV …
Unification of the electrical behavior of defects, impurities, and surface states in semiconductors: Virtual gap states in CdO
2009
In contrast to conventional semiconductors, native defects, hydrogen impurities, and surface states are all found to be donors in $n$-type CdO. Using this as a model system, the electrical behaviors of defects, dopants, and surface states in semiconductors are unified by a single energy level, the charge neutrality level, giving much insight into current materials and allowing a band-structure engineering scheme for obtaining desired custom electronic properties in new compound semiconductors.
Yttrium-doped hematite photoanodes for solar water splitting: Photoelectrochemical and electronic properties
2018
Abstract We investigate yttrium-doped hematite thin-film photoelectrochemical properties and find yttrium incorporation to amply improve the performance as a photoanode for water splitting under visible light. We used the spray pyrolysis method to prepare a set of yttrium doped Fe2-xYxO3 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.2) thin films (thickness below 500 nm) on glass and transparent conductive oxide coated glass slides. Using a substitutional homovalent (Y3+) dopant, the effect on functionality is rationalised as a combined effect on the electronic structure and small polaron mobility from the lattice structure, impurity levels, lattice stability and variance in hybridisation. The photoelectroch…
Structure and energetics of mixed4He-3He drops
1997
Using a finite-range density functional, we have investigated the energetics and structural features of mixed helium clusters. The possibility of doping the cluster with a molecule of sulfur hexafluoride is also considered. It is seen that the repulsion introduced by the impurity strongly modifies the properties of the smallest drops. Although only a qualitative comparison is possible, the gross features displayed by our calculations are in agreement with recent experimental findings. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}
