Comparison of Shod and Unshod Gait in Patients With Parkinson's Disease With Subthalamic and Nigral Stimulation

2022

Background: The Parkinsonian [i.e., Parkinson's disease (PD)] gait disorder represents a therapeutical challenge with residual symptoms despite the use of deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN DBS) and medical and rehabilitative strategies. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of different DBS modes as combined stimulation of the STN and substantia nigra (STN+SN DBS) and environmental rehabilitative factors as footwear on gait kinematics. Methods: This single-center, randomized, double-blind, crossover clinical trial assessed shod and unshod gait in patients with PD with medication in different DBS conditions (i.e., STIM OFF, STN DBS, and STN+SN DBS) during differe…

Multiple Scenario Analysis of Battery Energy Storage System Investment: Measuring Economic and Circular Viability

2022

Circular business models for batteries have been revealed in earlier research to achieve economic viability while reducing total resource consumption of raw materials. The objective of this study is to measure the economic performance of the preferred business model by creating different scenarios comparing second life (spent) and new battery investment for seven different European regions and four energy management strategies. Findings reveal levels of economic ability for a total of 34 scenarios simulated, including direct savings per kWh, a total change in energy costs per year, battery charge/discharge cycles, and comparative breakeven analyses. Regional effects are also measured based …

A simulation function approach for best proximity point and variational inequality problems

2017

We study sufficient conditions for existence of solutions to the global optimization problem min(x is an element of A) d(x, fx), where A, B are nonempty subsets of a metric space (X, d) and f : A -> B belongs to the class of proximal simulative contraction mappings. Our results unify, improve and generalize various comparable results in the existing literature on this topic. As an application of the obtained theorems, we give some solvability theorems of a variational inequality problem.

Understanding the Role of Sensorimotor Beta Oscillations

2021

Beta oscillations have been predominantly observed in sensorimotor cortices and basal\ud ganglia structures and they are thought to be involved in somatosensory processing\ud and motor control. Although beta activity is a distinct feature of healthy and pathological\ud sensorimotor processing, the role of this rhythm is still under debate. Here we review\ud recent findings about the role of beta oscillations during experimental manipulations (i.e.,\ud drugs and brain stimulation) and their alteration in aging and pathology. We show how\ud beta changes when learning new motor skills and its potential to integrate sensory input\ud with prior contextual knowledge. We conclude by discussing a n…

Characterization of a neutron–beta counting system with beta-delayed neutron emitters

2016

A new detection system for the measurement of beta-delayed neutron emission probabilities has been characterized using fission products with well known β-delayed neutron emission properties. The setup consists of BELEN-20, a 4π neutron counter with twenty 3He proportional tubes arranged inside a large polyethylene neutron moderator, a thin Si detector for β counting and a selftriggering digital data acquisition system. The use of delayed-neutron precursors with different neutron emission windows allowed the study of the effect of energy dependency on neutron, β and β-neutron rates. The observed effect is well reproduced by Monte Carlo simulations. The impact of this dependency on the accura…

Bifocal stimulation in patient with congenitally corrected transposition of great vessels

2012

Congenitally corrected transposition of the great vessels (CCTGV) is a rare congenital heart defect associated with multiple cardiac morphological abnormalities and conduction defects. Complete atrioventricular (AV) block occurs in 30% of patients and it may be present at birth or develop later with a rate of 2% per year; moreover, a systemic right ventricle is frequently characterized by heart failure in adult life. We used a bifocal cardiac stimulation for a young woman affected by CCTGV and atrioventricular Mobitz 2 and 2:1 block, considering structural, anatomic condition, and the high rate of pacing she underwent

The catalytic mechanism of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase from Trypanosoma cruzi elucidated via the QM/MM approach

2013

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) has been identified as a key enzyme involved in glycolysis processes for energy production in the Trypanosoma cruzi parasite. This enzyme catalyses the oxidative phosphorylation of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (G3P) in the presence of inorganic phosphate (Pi) and nicotinamide adenosine dinucleotide (NAD+). The catalytic mechanism used by GAPDH has been intensively investigated. However, the individual roles of Pi and the C3 phosphate of G3P (Ps) sites, as well as some residues such as His194 in the catalytic mechanism, remain unclear. In this study, we have employed Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations within hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular …
