Strategic group literature does not seem to offer strong enough theoretical bases to state the very existence of strategic groups and their effects on firm’s conduct and performance. Abstract An enormous number of empirical papers have estimated technical efficiency, the distance of firms inside a frontier, following the model of Farrell (Farrell, 1957. Trade in Central and Eastern European countries ten years after their EU accession — Is there convergence?

The paper focuses on the effects of EU’s Eastern Enlargement of 2004 on trade convergence within the EU and among the new member states from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE-8). Using sigma-convergence approach, it finds evidence of convergence of exports and imports per capita as well as of productivity levels associated with the member states’ export baskets. Convergence of territorial and commodity structures of trade has not occurred; conversely, divergence has been observed, leading to the possible conclusion that multinational companies have adjusted their production structure in facilities across the EU to achieve higher economies of scale. Although numerous studies show that cooperation relates strongly to obtaining benefits in business innovation, few researchers have considered the role of competition in this relationship. Nevertheless, it is expected that firms can boost their innovation if they cooperate with competitors and with intermediaries. Entrusting to the trade union the procedural instrument of guaranteeing the collective interests of workers cannot depend on the contractual form chosen by the parties to the relationship. Excluding, therefore, that the trade union has an interest in acting in the face of conduct that undermines the regularity of the collective protection action is contrary to the very raison d'être of Article 28 of the Labour Statute to defend the constitutionally relevant rights involved in industrial relations, as well as to the spirit of promotion and support of trade union action of the Workers' Statute.
