School environment, what effects on "individual" aspirations? The case of post-secondary education"
2007
The object of this study is to analyze differences in aspirations and choice of course of study at the outset of higher education. More particularly it aims to determine if the "individual" choices, which have an impact on the construction of educational inequalities, depend on school environment. Since the diversified character of school environment is an established fact in France, the first part of this work, based on a review of the sociology of education literature, draws attention to contextual dimensions as possible factors influencing educational and vocational aspirations. This question, which has remained unexplored at this level of the educational system in France, is dealt with …
2009
To assess social inequalities in higher education often appears as a straightforward issue: as a routine and as at the previous levels of education, one compares the diverse social groups' rates of access (or the rates of success) and any difference will be considered as an inequality... That will induce, sometimes, implementing some programs of positive discrimination. However, especially because higher education is the "final" stage of schooling careers, any analysis focusing on that level requires some specific reflection about how to assess social inequalities, with some political implications. This note raises some interrogations, both methodological and more theoretical (or political)…
Connection between Absorption Properties and Conformational Changes in Deinococcus radiodurans Phytochrome
2014
Phytochromes consist of several protein domains and a linear tetrapyrrole molecule, which interact as a red-light-sensing system. In this study, size-exclusion chromatography and light-scattering techniques are combined with UV-vis spectroscopy to investigate light-induced changes in dimeric Deinococcus radiodurans bacterial phytochrome (DrBphP) and its subdomains. The photosensory unit (DrCBD-PHY) shows an unusually stable Pfr state with minimal dark reversion, whereas the histidine kinase (HK) domain facilitates dark reversion to the resting state. Size-exclusion chromatography reveals that all phytochrome fragments remain as dimers in the illuminated state and dark state. Still, the elut…
Sport and Quality of Life
2022
Demographic inequalities as determinants and consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in Latvia
2021
Since early March 2020 Latvia is fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. Lessons learned from this crisis will be instrumental in shaping future public health policy. Any policy response to the pandemic must be tailored to the particular risks within population in order to avoid the unnecessary social and economic damage on a national and international scale. Available literature on the topic highlights region-specific demographic factors associated with elevated population vulnerability to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to ascertain the role of a pre-existing demographic inequalities in Latvia in the onset and progression of COVID-19 pandemic and lay groundwork for projectin…
Active-passive decentralized H∞ control for adjacent buildings under seismic excitation
2011
Author's version of a chapter in the book: Proceedings of the 18th IFAC World Congress 2011. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.3182/20110828-6-IT-1002.01192 In this paper, a control strategy to reduce the vibrational response of adjacent buildings under seismic excitation is presented. The proposed strategy combines passive linking elements with an active decentralized H∞ control system. The overall active-passive control system admits decentralized design and operation, and achieves an excellent vibrational reduction when the active control system works; in case of a full or partial failure of the active control system, a remarkable reduction in the vibrational res…
Robust delay-dependent H∞ control of uncertain time-delay systems with mixed neutral, discrete, and distributed time-delays and Markovian switching p…
2011
Author's version of an article published in the journal: IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I: Regular Papers. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/tcsi.2011.2106090 The problem of robust mode-dependent delayed state feedback H ∞ control is investigated for a class of uncertain time-delay systems with Markovian switching parameters and mixed discrete, neutral, and distributed delays. Based on the LyapunovKrasovskii functional theory, new required sufficient conditions are established in terms of delay-dependent linear matrix inequalities for the stochastic stability and stabilization of the considered system using some free matrices. The desired control is …
2019
The main challenge that Law will have to face in the near future is the defense of human being against the uncontrolled power of technology in different spheres: ecology versus the becoming of a new geological age: the Anthropocene; the finances, versus speculation and taxes fraud; biolaw, versus the transhumanist challenge; the rights to privacy and no manipulation versus GAF( Google, Amazon, Facebook).
