Segmental chromosomal alterations lead to a higher risk of relapse in infants with MYCN-non-amplified localised unresectable/disseminated neuroblasto…
2011
BACKGROUND: In neuroblastoma (NB), the presence of segmental chromosome alterations (SCAs) is associated with a higher risk of relapse. METHODS: In order to analyse the role of SCAs in infants with localised unresectable/disseminated NB without MYCN amplification, we have performed an array CGH analysis of tumours from infants enrolled in the prospective European INES trials. RESULTS: Tumour samples from 218 out of 300 enroled patients could be analysed. Segmental chromosome alterations were observed in 11%, 20% and 59% of infants enroled in trials INES99.1 (localised unresectable NB), INES99.2 (stage 4s) and INES99.3 (stage 4) (P<0.0001). Progression-free survival was poorer in patients wh…
Two independent epigenetic biomarkers predict survival in neuroblastoma.
2015
Background Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most common extracranial pediatric solid tumor with a highly variable clinical course, ranging from spontaneous regression to life-threatening disease. Survival rates for high-risk NB patients remain disappointingly low despite multimodal treatment. Thus, there is an urgent clinical need for additional biomarkers to improve risk stratification, treatment management, and survival rates in children with aggressive NB. Results Using gene promoter methylation analysis in 48 neuroblastoma tumors with microarray technology, we found a strong association between survival and gene promoter hypermethylation (P = 0.036). Hypermethylation of 70 genes significantly …
Is displacement possible without language? Evidence from preverbal infants and chimpanzees
2013
Is displacement possible without language? This question was addressed in a recent work by Liszkowski and colleagues (Liszkowski, Schafer, Carpenter, & Tomasello, 2009). The authors carried out an experiment to demonstrate that 12-month-old prelinguistic infants can communicate about absent entities by using pointing gestures, while chimpanzees cannot. The main hypothesis of their study is that displacement does not depend on language but is, however, exclusively human and instead depends on species-specific social-cognitive human skills. Against this hypothesis, we will argue that a symbolic representation is needed to intentionally communicate absence and that this symbolic representa…
Surgical Treatment on Subungual Osteochondromas in Paediatric Feet: A Case Series Study
2020
Subungual osteochondroma (SO) is an infrequent and non-malignant bone tumour of the distal phalanx, especially prominent in paediatric populations. The aim of this research was to describe a case series of paediatric feet with SO which received surgical treatments. The secondary purpose was to compare these descriptive data by sex distribution. Methods: Twenty-three paediatric feet with SO confirmed by clinical or radiological features received surgical treatment. Socio-demographic (age, sex, height, weight and BMI) and clinical features (side, location, tumour or pain presence, and nail lift before surgery, as well as recurrence and adverse effects at one month after intervention) were rep…

Nemaline myopathy with intranuclear rods--intranuclear rod myopathy.
1997
Among the different nosological forms of nemaline/rod myopathy, one morphological variant is marked by intranuclear rods in addition to sarcoplasmic rods. Such patients fall into two categories: firstly, adults and secondly, young infants suffering from the severe form. Intranuclear rods indicate unfavourable prognosis. Recently, intranuclear rods without sarcoplasmic rods have also been encountered. Intranuclear rods, largely solitary, are often found large in size with the ultrastructural lattice pattern of sarcoplasmic rods and Z-disks. They contain alpha-actinin and actin. The origin of intranuclear rods is still enigmatic. Their presence within nuclei without sarcoplasmic rods points t…
