The aim of the present study was to evaluate NO synthesis and metabolism in severely obese children with different degrees of metabolic risk and to ascertain their relation with the parameters of oxidative stress and inflammation.The study involved 60 obese children evaluated with respect to metabolic risk factors (MRFs) (324 MRFs and 28 ≥ 4 MRFs) and 50 normal weight children between 7 and 14 years of age. The plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interferon-gamma were measured in 53 consecutive children with serologically confirmed Mediterranean spotted fever and were found to be increased during the acute phase compared with the convalescent phase (tumor necrosis factor-alpha mean 32.17 vs. 4.12 pg/ml, P < 0.0001; interferon-gamma mean 84.17 vs. 2.65 pg/ml, P = 0.0006). BACKGROUND One mechanism by which alcoholic liver disease (ALD) progresses is oxidative stress and the generation of reactive oxygen species, among others due to the induction of cytochrome P-4502E1 (CYP2E1). Experimental data underline the key role of CYP2E1 because ALD could be partially prevented in rats by the administration of the specific CYP2E1 inhibitor chlormethiazole. Aerobic training and angiogenesis activation in patients with stable chronic heart failure: a preliminary report.

The pathophysiology of chronic heart failure (CHF) involves multiple hystologic and molecular alterations. To determine the effects of physical training on circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), angiogenesis (angiogenin, angiopoietin-1 and -2, VEGF, Tie-2, SDF-1α) and inflammation (IL-6, CRP), we compared data obtained from 11 CHF pts before and after 3 months aerobic exercise training, to those from 10 non trained CHF pts (CHF-C group, age 64 + 2 years, NYHA 2).
