Demonstration as an aid to learning from animation

2017

Communication donnée le 1er septembre 2017 lors du symposium : Learning with dynamic media in formal and informal contexts (session K 26); International audience; The effectiveness of requiring learners to generate operational demonstrations while viewing an animation of a working mechanism was explored as a means of improving their animation processing. We assumed that the demonstration requirement would enhance learner extraction of key dynamic information needed for building a high quality mental model. It is expected that compared with note-taking controls, those in the demonstration group will give more attention to the spatiotemporal relationships amongst the mechanism’s components. T…

Internet use and informal help for surrounding communities in Finland

2014

This chapter investigates whether Internet use and involvement in social networking sites are related to the unpaid help that is provided to members of the surrounding communities. Three different forms of unpaid help are studied: assistance in care, housework and technology use. Previous literature dealing with the impacts of ICT use on the social cohesion of communities and the sense of togetherness is discussed to provide a solid basis for the research. As for the empirical part of the study, the chapter analyses the Finnish Time Use Survey collected between 2009 and 2010. The results show that it is not Internet use per se that is associated with the provision of informal help to the ot…

PeerLA - Assistant for Individual Learning Goals and Self-Regulation Competency Improvement in Online Learning Scenarios

2016

While online learning is already a part of university education and didactics, not all students have the necessary self-regulation competency to really learn on their own efficiently and effectively. In classroom a teacher can take over a moderating part, set intermediate goals and give feedback to one's progress, but participants of online learning courses (e.g. in blended scenarios or Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)) face a higher demand of self-regulation competency. This paper presents a course and content independent assistant, PeerLA, which assists in improving self-regulation competency. PeerLA allows setting of long-term goals, breakdown into intermediate goals and keeps track o…

What Explains Prevalence of Informal Employment in European Countries: The Role of Labor Institutions, Governance, Immigrants, and Growth

2011

This paper looks into institutional and other macro determinants of prevalence of informal dependent employment, as well as informal self-employment, in European countries, using European Social Survey data on work without legal contract in on 30 countries, covering years 2004-2009. Consistently with theoretical predictions, quality of business environment has a significant negative impact on prevalence of both types of informal employment. The share of non-contracted employees is negatively affected by perceived quality of public services and positively related to economic growth. Informal self-employment is positively related to growth in Europe at large, as well as in Eastern and Souther…

Poverty, taxation and governance

2006

In a simple model based on political support approach, we show that poor and less egalitarian societies may impose a lower tax rate contrary to the prediction of the median voter approach. This is consistent with the available empirical findings. In the framework developed in this paper, the government can strategically design a weak governance system to promote informal activities for the poor. This constitutes an alternative redistributive strategy other than the standard tax-transfer policy. The government chooses the tax rate and the degree of governance simultaneously to maximize the average income of the poor in the informal sector of the economy, i.e. those who constitute the majorit…

Rasgos coloquiales en el lenguaje periodístico español

2009

Although spontaneous conversation is the prototypical situation of use of colloquial Spanish, we can often identify colloquial “attitudes” in situations, which apparently require the presence of a standard, learned or even technical variety. It is logical to expect that the press, the most “popular” of all media, would try to reproduce a language accessible to all readers. In this article we have taken into consideration the most frequent colloquial elements (syntactical exemplification, lexicon and phraseology, daily metaphors, etc.) of a corpus of articles from El País.

2021

Also, the factors associated with informal literacy learning at and outside of work were studied. The study participants were Nordic adults aged 35–65 years. The statistical method was regression analysis, and the results indicate that informal literacy activities at work are associated primarily with occupation, and informal literacy activities outside of work with education, parents’ education and gender. Initial education, occupation, language background and age exerted the strongest estimated associations with r…
