κ-Carrageenan and PVA blends as bioinks to 3D print scaffolds for cartilage reconstruction.

2022

3D printing of polymeric scaffolds and autologous stem cells is a promising tool for damaged facial cartilage reconstruction surgeries. To this end, suitable bioinks are needed to generate scaffolds with the required morphological and functional features. We formulated hydrogel bioinks using k-Carrageen (kC) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in three different weight ratios. The kC gives the systems the ability to undergo rapid sol-to-gel transitions upon cooling from 60 °C and above to body temperature, while the PVA is used as rheology modifier and porogen. The latter is crosslinked after molding or printing by freeze-thaw cycling for 1 day (FT1) or 5 days (FT5). To select the most suitable f…

Cisplatin sensitivity is related to late DNA damage processing and checkpoint control rather than to the early DNA damage response

2008

The present study aimed at elucidating mechanisms dictating cell death triggered by cisplatin-induced DNA damage. We show that CL-V5B hamster mutant cells, a derivative of V79B, are hypersensitive to cisplatin-induced apoptotic death. CL-V5B cells are characterized by attenuated cisplatin-induced early (2-6 h) stress response, such as phosphorylation of stress-activated protein kinases (SAPK/JNK), ATM and Rad3-related (ATR) protein kinase, histone H2AX and checkpoint kinase-1 (Chk-1). Human FANCC cells also showed a reduced phosphorylation of H2AX and SAPK/JNK at early time point after cisplatin treatment. This was not the case for BRCA2-defective VC-8 hamster cells, indicating that the FA …

Playfully Coding

2017

This paper describes a framework for successful interaction between universities and schools. It is common for computing academics interested in outreach (computer science evangelism) to work with local schools, particularly in countries where the computing curriculum in K-12 is new or underdeveloped. However it is rare for these collaborations to be ongoing, and for resources created through these school-university links to be shared beyond the immediate neighborhood. We have achieved this, through shared resources, careful evaluation, and cross-country collaboration. The activities themselves are inspired by ideas from the Lifelong Kindergarten group at MIT, emphasizing playful exploratio…

Error mitigation using RaptorQ codes in an experimental indoor free space optical link under the influence of turbulence

2015

In free space optical (FSO) communications, several factors can strongly affect the link quality. Among them, one of the most important impairments that can degrade the FSO link quality and its reliability even under the clear sky conditions consists of optical turbulence. In this work, the authors investigate the generation of both weak and moderate turbulence regimes in an indoor environment to assess the FSO link quality. In particular, they show that, due to the presence of the turbulence, the link experiences both erasure errors and packet losses during transmission, and also compare the experimental statistical distribution of samples with the predicted Gamma Gamma model. Furthermore,…

Cadherin 23 is a component of the transient lateral links in the developing hair bundles of cochlear sensory cells

2005

AbstractCadherin 23 is required for normal development of the sensory hair bundle, and recent evidence suggests it is a component of the tip links, filamentous structures thought to gate the hair cells' mechano-electrical transducer channels. Antibodies against unique peptide epitopes were used to study the properties of cadherin 23 and its spatio-temporal expression patterns in developing cochlear hair cells. In the rat, intra- and extracellular domain epitopes are readily detected in the developing hair bundle between E18 and P5, and become progressively restricted to the distal tip of the hair bundle. From P13 onwards, these epitopes are no longer detected in hair bundles, but immunoreac…

Strongly invertible links and divides

2008

Abstract To a proper generic immersion of a finite number of copies of the unit interval in a 2-disc, called a divide, A’Campo associates a link in S 3 . From the more general notion of ordered Morse signed divides, one obtains a braid presentation of links of divides. In this paper, we prove that every strongly invertible link is isotopic to the link of an ordered Morse signed divide. We give fundamental moves for ordered Morse signed divides and show that strongly invertible links are equivalent if and only if we can pass from one ordered Morse signed divide to the other by a sequence of such moves. Then we associate a polynomial to an ordered Morse signed divide, invariant for these move…

Size measuring techniques as tool to monitor pea proteins intramolecular crosslinking by transglutaminase treatment

2015

International audience; In this work, techniques for monitoring the intramolecular transglutaminase cross-links of pea proteins, based on protein size determination, were developed. Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis profiles of transglutaminase-treated low concentration (0.01% w/w) pea albumin samples, compared to the untreated one (control), showed a higher electrophoretic migration of the major albumin fraction band (26 kDa), reflecting a decrease in protein size. This protein size decrease was confirmed, after DEAE column purification, by dynamic light scattering (DLS) where the hydrodynamic radius of treated samples appears to be reduced compared to the control o…
