Augmented Reality of the Middle Ear Combining Otoendoscopy and Temporal Bone Computed Tomography

2018

International audience; HYPOTHESIS:Augmented reality (AR) may enhance otologic procedures by providing sub-millimetric accuracy and allowing the unification of information in a single screen.BACKGROUND:Several issues related to otologic procedures can be addressed through an AR system by providing sub-millimetric precision, supplying a global view of the middle ear cleft, and advantageously unifying the information in a single screen. The AR system is obtained by combining otoendoscopy with temporal bone computer tomography (CT).METHODS:Four human temporal bone specimens were explored by high-resolution CT-scan and dynamic otoendoscopy with video recordings. The initialization of the system…

A Crisis Management Serious Game for Responding Extreme Weather Event

2017

Managing crisis with limited resources through a serious game is deemed as one of the ways of training and can be regarded as an alternative to the table-top exercise. This paper presents the so-called “Operasjon Tyrsdal” serious game, inspired by a real case of extreme weather that hit the west coast of Norway. This reference case is used to add realism to the game. The game is designed for a single player, while the mechanics are framed in such way that the player should deal with limited resources, and elevated event pressure over time to manage. Beside applying an iterative Scrum method with seven Sprint cycles, we combined the development work with desk research and involvement of test…

VIGIL System: A Computer Vision-Based AID System. Evaluation in a Ring Motorway Section in Madrid

1994

Abstract The VIGIL system is an Automatic Incident and Congestion Detection System based on computer vision technology tor motorway applications. VIGIL is constituted by two main modules, the Local Sensor Module and the Central System module. The objective of this paper is to describe the VIGIL Central System functions, mainly the alarm filtering and management capabilities, and to present the field trial currently carried out in Madrid within the ARTIS project (Advanced RTI in Spain) supported by the Tranport Telematic Programme of the EC.

The Role of Parental Communication and Emotional Intelligence in Child-to-Parent Violence

2019

In recent years, cases of child-to-parent violence (CPV) have increased significantly, prompting greater scientific interest in clarifying its causes. The aim of this research was to study the relationship between styles of family communication (open, offensive and avoidant), emotional intelligence or EI (attention, repair and perceived emotional clarity) and CPV, taking into account the gender of the aggressors. The participants of the study were 1200 adolescents (46.86% boys) between the ages of 12 and 18 enrolled at secondary schools in the Autonomous Communities of Andalusia and Valencia (M = 13.88, SD = 1.32). Discovering Homophily in Online Social Networks

2018

During the last ten years, Online Social Networks (OSNs) have increased their popularity by becoming part of the real life of users. Despite their tremendous widespread, OSNs have introduced several privacy issues as a consequence of the nature of the information involved in these services. Indeed, the huge amount of private information produced by users of current OSNs expose the users to a number of risks. The analysis of the users’ similarity in OSNs is attracting the attention of researchers because of its implications on privacy and social marketing. In particular, the homophily between users could be used to reveal important characteristics that users would like to keep hidden, hence …

A Comparative Study of Nonlinear Machine Learning for the "In Silico" Depiction of Tyrosinase Inhibitory Activity from Molecular Structure.

2011

In the preset report, for the first time, support vector machine (SVM), artificial neural network (ANN), Baye- sian networks (BNs), k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) are applied and compared on two "in-house" datasets to describe the tyrosinase inhibitory activity from the molecular structure. The data set Data I is used for the identification of tyrosi- nase inhibitors (TIs) including 701 active and 728 inactive compounds. Data II consists of active chemicals for potency estimation of TIs. The 2D TOMOCOMD-CARDD atom-based quadratic indices are used as molecular descriptors. The de- rived models show rather encouraging results with the areas under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (AURC) curve …

Convolutional architectures for virtual screening

2020

Abstract Background A Virtual Screening algorithm has to adapt to the different stages of this process. Early screening needs to ensure that all bioactive compounds are ranked in the first positions despite of the number of false positives, while a second screening round is aimed at increasing the prediction accuracy. Results A novel CNN architecture is presented to this aim, which predicts bioactivity of candidate compounds on CDK1 using a combination of molecular fingerprints as their vector representation, and has been trained suitably to achieve good results as regards both enrichment factor and accuracy in different screening modes (98.55% accuracy in active-only selection, and 98.88% …

Modeling anti-allergic natural compounds by molecular topology.

2013

Molecular topology has been applied to the search of QSAR models able to identify the anti-allergic activity of a wide group of heterogeneous compounds. Through the linear discriminant analysis and artificial neural networks, correct classification percentages above 85% for both the training set and the test set have been obtained. After carrying out a virtual screening with a natural product library, about thirty compounds with theoretical anti-allergic activity have been selected. Among them, hesperidin, naringin, salinomycin, sorbitol, curcumol, myricitrin, diosmin and kinetin stand out. Some of these compounds have already been referenced as having anti-allergic activity.

Liquid crystal goggles for vision science applications

2003

Spectral and switching characteristics of two manufacturer liquid crystal goggles are tested, and a contrast ratio for the computer display phosphors wavelengths is determined. Goggles are used in vision science experiments for random dot stereo stimuli phase separation. The human stereovision acuity and threshold was studied for case, when one eye random dot stereo stimulus simulated on the display is cotinuously blurred or the stimulus contrast is decreased.

Channel Capacity in Psychovisual Deep-Nets: Gaussianization Versus Kozachenko-Leonenko

2020

In this work, we quantify how neural networks designed from biology using no statistical training have a remarkable performance in information theoretic terms. Specifically, we address the question of the amount of information that can be extracted about the images from the different layers of psychophysically tuned deep networks. We show that analytical approaches are not possible, and we propose the use of two empirical estimators of capacity: the classical Kozachenko-Lonenko estimator and a recent estimator based on Gaussianization. Results show that networks purely based on visual psychophysics are extremely efficient in two aspects: (1) the internal representation of these networks dup…
