Conditional generation of non-classical states in a nondegenerate two-photon micromaser: single-mode Fock states preparation. II

1997

Abstract A conditional generation of single-mode Fock states in the framework of a non-degenerate two-photon micromaser theory is reported. The exact expression for the probability of success of the experiment is obtained. We show that it is possible to conjugate experimentally interesting values of this probability, with the generation of number states having a controllable high intensity. This objective is reached by constructing analytically detailed rules about the cavity state at t = 0 as well as the atom–field interaction times as functions of the available operating conditions. These rules play a central role in our Fock-state-building process, leading to an essential countering of t…

Laser control for the optimal evolution of pure quantum states

2005

Starting from an initial pure quantum state, we present a strategy for reaching a target state corresponding to the extremum (maximum or minimum) of a given observable. We show that a sequence of pulses of moderate intensity, applied at times when the average of the observable reaches its local or global extremum, constitutes a strategy transferable to different control issues. Among them, post-pulse molecular alignment and orientation are presented as examples. The robustness of such strategies with respect to experimentally relevant parameters is also examined.

Spectral distribution and Coulomb correction for nuclear bremsstrahlung induced by heavy targets

2021

Abstract Bremsstrahlung spectra below 250 MeV have been measured colliding 500 MeV–electrons with Cu, Ag, and Au targets. The experimental intensity ratios relative to Cu are well described by an accurate analytical high-energy theory, which accounts both for Coulomb distortion and screening. This represents the first experimental verification of the discovery by Bethe-Maximon that leading-order quantum mechanical calculations, equivalent to quasiclassical approximations, become exact at high energies and small angles. It also shows that radiative QED effects play a minor role in the covered part of the spectral distribution within the accuracy (1.6%) of the present measurements.

Silicon photomultiplier properties at cryogenic temperatures

2015

Abstract The properties of different types of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) were studied at cryogenic temperatures. In liquid nitrogen at 77 K, problems with quenching in Hamamatsu SiPMs and with the protective epoxy layer, covering Zecotek SiPMs, were observed. Tests with one Zecotek SiPM were successful after removal of the epoxy layer. In liquid helium at 4 K, fast signals with pulse lengths shorter than 50 ns were observed, the dark count rate was below 10 Hz and no after-pulses were detected. The gain, as a function of over-voltage, was comparable to room temperature. The SiPM׳s response to photons was found to be linear with intensity for low light levels and single-photon detectio…

Evaluation using m.c.n.p. code of the bremsstrahlung energy spectrum produced by interactions between structural materials and accelerated electrons

2004

Abstract In order to design the biological shield of industrial accelerator plants, it is needed to have a good knowledge of the bremsstrahlung energy spectrum and the intensity of the bremsstrahlung produced by electron interactions with both products (usually water equivalent) and structural materials such as concrete, iron, aluminium. Using the MCNP code, a normalized bremsstrahlung energy spectrum was obtained for materials with average atomic number lower than or equal to 13 and irradiated with 5 and 10 Mev electrons, respectively; multiplying the spectrum by suitable coefficients, it was possible to obtain the real spectrum for materials such as water, concrete, aluminium and iron. Th…

COS B observation of high-energy γ radiation from 3C273

1978

THE discovery of a high-energy γ-ray source at α(1950) = 12h 29 min±6 min, δ(1950)= +3°±1.5° is reported here. Arguments are given for the identification with 3C273. If this identification is correct, the γ-ray luminosity of 3C273 in the energy range 50–500 MeV is 2×1046 erg s−1 for H0 = 60 km s−1 Mpc−1.

Light propagation in triple-film hetero-opals

2005

Spectra of transmitted and forward scattered light of single opal films and triple-film hetero-opals have been compared. The presence of an intermediate film in hetero-opal results in an anomalous increase of the scattered light intensity and in the change of the mainly ballistic light propagation regime to the mainly diffusive one in the frequency range of the photonic bandgap defect state.

Blendensysteme für Streulichtphotometer

1973

The geometrical arrangement of slits in the secondary beam of light scattering photometers has been investigated. The hitherto applied configuration of slits, vertically fixed on the secondary beam, requires a volume correction-sinϑ-for the determination of the angle-dependent scattered intensity. Arrangements of slits with varying width which depends on the angle of observation ϑ are proposed. They avoide the volume correction, or render the scattering volume independent of ϑ, and at the same time increase the measuring accuracy.
