On the side of the marginals: the character of Ahmed in The Tower of Defense (1978) of Copy
2018
Copi, writer, playwright and draughtsman Ar- gentino settles in Paris in 1962 until his death in 1987. The experience of exile and wandering marks the personal and creative trajectory of this intercultural artist. Indeed, a whole series of vulnerable and marginal characters swarm in their particular universe and subvesivo. In this space of the excluded, the figure of the immi- grant Maghreb in France, embodied in the cha- racter of Ahmed, acquires all its significance. In this work we will try to analyse the symbolic value of Ahmed, heir to the colonial past mar- ked by rejection, which appears in the Teatro de Copi, specifically in La Défense Tour (1978). Ahmed’s image traces an invisible …
Didáctica (lengua y literatura)
2017
Nuestro …
Teaching and learning about interculturality in communication and management
2022
This chapter is based on the author's experience of designing, setting up and running a 2-year English-taught MA programme in intercultural management for international students at the University of Burgundy, France. The programme seeks to train the next generation of intercultural specialists, with a critical, interpretivist and non-essentialising view of the way that individuals use cultures and identities to communicate in organisational settings. Going beyond traditional national-level or competence-based approaches to intercultural management, it promotes theoretical and practice-based understanding of the communication processes at work within organisations, joint ventures or internat…
2015
In “Letter to Friends” (Profit and Loss, 2011), a long epistolary poem inspired by Letters from Iceland (1937) by W. H. Auden and Louis MacNeice, Leontia Flynn paints an introspective and retrospective self-portrait in which she examines all the elements that have formed her existence until her recent maternity. The identity that emerges from this intimate inventory is plural, “mixed” or “multi-breed” (Édouard Glissant), the cultural mix resulting not only from history, globalization and travel but also from temporal, linguistic and psychological shifts or ruptures.Flynn’s lyrical and polyphonic (if not cacophonous) piece, bursting with asides, debating a multitude of subjects in an infinit…
2018
This paper explores the poetry of Sinéad Morrissey (born in Portadown, Northern Ireland, in 1972), one of the most highly regarded of the younger generation of contemporary Irish poets. Taking into account her six collections to date – including There Was Fire in Vancouver (1996), The State of the Prisons (2005), Parallax (2013) and On Balance published in 2017, it examines the great variety of poetical strategies – analogy, metaphor, polysemy, play on form and perspective, pictorialism and iconicity, ekphrasis, etc. – that Morrissey uses to tell of most personal experiences (physical pain, exile, loss, pregnancy and motherhood, confrontation with forms of otherness, states of imprisonment,…
Utopian Formats: Simon Morley’s “Lost Horizon”
2021
International audience; In “Lost Horizon”, a 2014 ekphrasis, Simon Morley summons up not just one artpiece but several that have all in common to deal with utopia: a fifteenth century traditional Korean handscroll painting by artist Ahn Gyeon entitled A Dream Journey to the Peach Blossom Paradise (1447); René Daumal’s uncompleted surrealist novel Mount Analogue: A Novel of Symbolically Authentic Non-Euclidean Adventures in Mountain Climbing (1952); James Hilton’s best-selling novel Lost Horizon (1932) and its Hollywood black and white adaptation by Frank Capra (1938), not to mention philosophical texts by Proudhon or Thomas More.Splicing together Western and Eastern traditions, high and pop…
Psychological support for children who are victims of abuse in Cambodia: Culture as a developmental tool of traumatic experience
2020
When psychologists step in the humanitarian field, they are confronted with cultural and language issues during their intervention. The way of expressing trauma is deeply linked with the cultural background, thus it should guide and shape the psychological support to make it more appropriate. Within a Khmer NGO, we have set up a psychological support based on different sorts of mediation. Our patients were eight children with the same set of symptoms: recurrence and massive anxiety, most of the time appearing through animist cultural representations. In this article, we will first present the situation of Bonat, witness of domestic violence and of his mother’s death, and then the situation …
Practical applications of naturalistic inquiry in intercultural education
2021
In recent years, the field of intercultural communication has seen a remarkable shift characterized by a growth in publications that distance themselves from the traditional, essentialist understanding of culture. In research, this shift is reflected in approaches that appreciate culture-in-action instead of taking culture for granted as a stable entity that pre-exists social interaction and predicts as well as explains human behavior. However, despite attempts to introduce differentiated views on culture and interculturality in education, concrete options for critical intercultural training are scarce and often remain abstract, which makes their application challenging. This article argues…
Rola nauczyciela w edukacji wielokulturowej i międzykulturowej na Ukrainie i w Polsce
2018
