Beyond Scientific Objectivity : Knowing about Right and Wrong

2007

Our way of seeing things depends upon the state of our minds. We can look at the world through the lenses of love, hate or indifference. What remains largely unquestioned about science is its essence. Scientific objectivity is not free from subjectivity. I argue that objective, scientific knowledge is a partial knowledge based on indifference, the state of mind that constitutes the scientific attitude. Hate does not produce knowledge at all, but reinforces our prejudices. However, love gives the possibility of knowing someone or something fully, and not only as an object. Once we accept that our experiences, thoughts, and feelings are not incommunicable, we can arrive at inter-subjective an…

Il consenso informato ai trattamenti sanitari sui minori e decisioni di fine vita. Riflessioni comparatistiche

2019

The essay deals with the informed consent to allow or to refuse medical treatment for pediatric patients, in a comparative law perspective. The first part focuses on the principle of personal autonomy and the rights to health and to life for patiens who lack capacity, as enshrined in Italian legislation. In determining care and treatment in relation to their child, parents have to take into account the physical and mental well-being, life and dignity of the person, as fully as possible (art. 3, L. 219/2017). The second part of the paper investigates the consequences of parents' refusal to interrupt or continue life-sustaining treatment in relation to infants suffering from serious and incur…

Money in an Estimated Business Cycle Model of the Euro Area

2006

We present maximum likelihood estimates of a small scale dynamic general equilibrium model for the Eurozone. We pay special attention to the role of money, both through its direct effect upon private agents’ decisions and as a component of the monetary policy rule. Our results can be summarized as follows. First, we find no direct effect of money upon inflation and output but money growth plays a significant role in the interest rate rule. Second, money demand shocks mainly help to forecast real balances while real shocks explain the bulk of price, output and interest rates fluctuations. Third, the estimated model predicts sensible conditional correlations among those variables both to dema…

Contingent Valuation Measurement for Staging the Olympic Games: The Failed Bid to Host the 2018 Winter Games in Munich

2020

In the past decade, well-planned bids for hosting Olympic Games failed due to a sudden lack of a support by the population. Therefore, we study both the determinants of people’s willingness to pay (WTP) to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Munich and the changes of respondents’ attitudes and WTP over time. The results from three surveys in 2009, 2010 and 2011 demonstrate that both the perception of the public benefit of the Olympic Games and the general interest in sport have a positive influence on WTP. Moreover, attitudes vary over time, indicating that external factors influence the population’s evaluations of, and appreciation for, hosting of Olympic Games (e.g. media reports). In c…

El traslado ilícito de menores en la Unión Europea: retorno vs violencia familiar o doméstica = International child abduction in the European Union: …

2018

From canon to chaos management: blogging as a learning tool in a modern Finnish literature course

2015

This article is based on the teaching experiment implemented in summer 2013 in a modern Finnish literature course organised by the Centre for International Mobility (CIMO) and the University of Jyvaskyla Language Centre. In order to break away from the traditional conception of literature and text, students’ independent blogging was chosen as the final course assignment instead of a traditional final project. Our aim has been to determine what blogging as an activity can add to second-language learning (i.e. learning the language in a country where it is spoken as a native language) in the context of modern Finnish literature. Our special interest is how new learning environments and approa…

Cities and Skills for Integration: What Can Urban Planning do? Experiences and Reflections Between Public Spaces and Collective Interest for Urban an…

2018

Immigration and integration of foreign communities is a condition that strongly affects the form and the meaning of public space. In contexts that are new to the phenomenon, there may be an occasion to revise the protocols and models for the development of new spatial relationships, based on the presence of communities that are no longer homogeneous. The theme of urban regeneration due to the presence of migrant communities has been addressed in various ways and from different points of view, often focusing on the creation of urban spaces capable of improving livability, rarely with the creation of integration processes or the construction of new urban identities. However, a resilient point…

Comment on the editorial ‘The secret ways of scientists’ in EMBO reports , December 2000

2001

I read ‘The secret ways of scientists’ with much interest and in principle I closely share the view expressed there. However, I am rather suspicious that such a view no longer reflects the truth. It appears to me that the tendency among scientists to start their own biotech companies may lead to a corruption of values and create a rather strange mixture of attitudes. The editorial states that ‘our …

Monetary Policy and the Exchange Rate During the Asian Crisis: Identification Through Heteroscedasticity

2003

This paper examines whether a monetary policy tightening (i.e., an increase in the domestic interest rate) was successful in defending the exchange rate from speculative pressures during the Asian financial crisis. We estimate a bivariate VECM for four Asian countries, and improve upon existing studies in two important ways. First, by using a long data span we are able to compare the effects of an interest rate rise on the nominal exchange rate during tranquil and turbulent periods. Second, we take into account the endogeneity of interest rates and identify the system by exploiting the heteroscedasticity properties of the relevant time series, following Rigobon (2002). We find that while ti…

Interest Rates and Net Interest Margins: The Impact of Monetary Policy

2017

In this chapter, we examine the determinants of bank net interest margin, focusing on the effect of interest rates, and thus monetary policy decisions. The analysis is carried with a panel of banks from 32 OECD countries over the period 2003–2014. The results show a quadratic relationship between net interest margins and interest rates, implying that the variation of the latter has a greater effect when interest rates are low. An important policy implication of the results is that there is a trade-off between economic growth and financial stability associated with the impact of expansionary monetary policy when the level of interest rates is very low. As a result, if the current scenario of…
