Initial experiences in radiology e-learning
2007
The use of two different educator-centric learning management systems (LMSs), Moodle and Manila, for radiology e-learning was formatively evaluated and the implications of the future use of LMSs in radiology education were explored. NeuroRAD, a neuroradiologic digital library and learning community, is implemented with Moodle, one of the most popular open-source educator-centric LMSs. Pediatric-Education.org, a pediatric digital library and learning community, is implemented with Manila, a commercial educator-centric LMS. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of these LMSs were performed with World Wide Web server log file statistical programs and user-submitted comment forms. In 2005, Neur…
Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps impact in severe asthma patients: Evidences from the Severe Asthma Network Italy (SANI) registry
2020
Abstract Background The clinical and laboratory features of patients enrolled in the Severe Asthma Network in Italy (SANI) registry, a web-based observatory collecting demographic, clinical, functional and inflammatory data of patients with severe asthma were evaluated, with a special emphasis to chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP). Methods For each eligible patients the following information has been collected: demographic data, clinical features, asthma control in the previous month according to the GINA (Global INitiative for Asthma) Guidelines and standardized questionnaires, concomitant regular and on demand treatments and inflammatory markers. Results 695 patients wit…
German registry for acute aortic dissection type A (GERAADA)--lessons learned from the registry.
2010
A German registry for acute aortic dissection type A (GERAADA) was initiated by the Working Group for Aortic Surgery and Interventional Vascular Surgery of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (GSTCVS) in July 2006. This web-based database was developed to record the data of patients who had undergone surgery for aortic dissection type A. From analyzing the data, we aim to learn how to improve surgical treatment and to identify parameters affecting patient outcome. In the beginning, 33 cardiac centers participated via online access to the registry on the GSTCVS' homepage. Since then, 43 centers in Germany, Switzerland and Austria have begun entering data on the pre- an…
German Registry for Acute Aortic Dissection Type A (GERAADA)--new software design, parameters and their definitions.
2011
BACKGROUND The working group for aortic surgery and interventional vascular surgery of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (GSTCVS) initiated the web-based German Registry for Acute Aortic Dissection type A (GERAADA). It is the project's aim to collect standardized data from a large pool of patients with acute aortic dissections type A (AADA) to gain a deeper insight and knowledge to improve surgical therapies and perioperative management for these patients in the future. METHODS In addition to new medical insights, the working group has gained more experience over the last 4 years in how to collect valid and high-quality data. This experience led us to revise the dat…
Data granularity in mid-year life table construction
2020
[EN] Life tables have a substantial influence on both public pension systems and life insurance policies. National statistical agencies construct life tables from death rate estimates (𝑚𝑥), or death probabilities (𝑞𝑥 ), after applying various hypotheses to the aggregated figures of demographic events (deaths, migrations and births). The use of big data has become extensive across many disciplines, including population statistics. We take advantage of this fact to create new (more unrestricted) mortality estimators within the family of period-based estimators, in particular, when the exposed-to-risk population is computed through mid-year population estimates. We use actual d…
Big Data in Corporate Governance decision
2020
[EN] Progress in Big Data in recent years has grown exponentially, which has allowed the detection and processing of a large amount of data. Until recently, this fact was unattainable by the lack of mechanization of the corporate governance reports. This paper investigates the relationship between corporate governance decisions affect the indebtedness policies of 1,956 industrial companies listed in Europe and the USA over the period 2016–2018 (5,868 observations). To measure corporate governance decisions, we use detailed information on the expertise of audit committees, the proportion of independent directors, board structures and women's presence on corporate boards. Our findings, which …
Strategies for annotation and curation of translational databases: the eTUMOUR project
2012
Altres ajuts: LSHC/CT2004-503094 The eTUMOUR (eT) multi-centre project gathered in vivo and ex vivo magnetic resonance (MR) data, as well as transcriptomic and clinical information from brain tumour patients, with the purpose of improving the diagnostic and prognostic evaluation of future patients. In order to carry this out, among other work, a database-the eTDB-was developed. In addition to complex permission rules and software and management quality control (QC), it was necessary to develop anonymization, processing and data visualization tools for the data uploaded. It was also necessary to develop sophisticated curation strategies that involved on one hand, dedicated fields for QC-gene…
Online Education and Quality of Life: Universidad de Palermo as a Model of Innovation in Latin America
2019
We are living in a time full of challenges as the Fourth Industrial Revolution unfolds at an unprecedented pace, in an interconnected world which has changed the way we work, the way we communicate, and education can’t be an exception. The boundaries between the physical and digital worlds are becoming more and more blurred, and the convergence of online and face-to-face interaction is becoming ever more evident, with machine learning and artificial intelligence applied to everyday life. Technology is changing the world, and universities must not only adapt to this reality but also innovate and take advantage of it, in order to offer more and better quality education to an increasingly dive…
