Analysis of discrete and continuous distributions of ventilatory time constants from dynamic computed tomography.

2005

In this study, an algorithm was developed to measure the distribution of pulmonary time constants (TCs) from dynamic computed tomography (CT) data sets during a sudden airway pressure step up. Simulations with synthetic data were performed to test the methodology as well as the influence of experimental noise. Furthermore the algorithm was applied to in vivo data. In five pigs sudden changes in airway pressure were imposed during dynamic CT acquisition in healthy lungs and in a saline lavage ARDS model. The fractional gas content in the imaged slice (FGC) was calculated by density measurements for each CT image. Temporal variations of the FGC were analysed assuming a model with a continuous…

The Content of the Websites: Emergence of Intimate Cyberplaces

2017

On the basis of an interpretation of the content of the contrade’s websites, this chapter proposes that these communities unlock cyberspace through inhabiting cyberplaces. They local ise cyberspace, making it concrete and create intimacy by highlighting their history, special places, and maps of their district, announcing events and posting pictures of them, presenting and explaining their symbol ism, exhibiting emblems and artefacts, and by listing the names and showing pictures of community members and horses that have taken part in the palio. By constructing websites in such a way, the contrade inhabit cyberplaces that are characterised by intimacy and familiarity , as they present their…

Baroja como materia de sus libros: para una lectura de El árbol de la ciencia (1911) en clave autobiográfica

2014

The aim of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of Barojian autobiographical literature and to check if there are enough arguments to state that El arbol de la ciencia is Pio Baroja’s most autobiographical novel. For that purpose, and after going over the scholar’s theories about the autobiographical side of Barojian literature, the article focuses on the study of autobiographical characters in El arbol de la ciencia and attempts to place this novel within its «autobiographical space». Lastly, it suggests a possible interpretation of the double value that we attribute to the main character of the novel, Andres Hurtado, as an autobiographical character and as a generational symbol of…

The oceanic state: a conceptual elucidation in terms of modal contact

2012

Despite its lengthy history in psychoanalysis, the psychological origins, essential features and value of the oceanic state remain open to dispute. This ambiguity has come at a cost to the clarity of theoretical discussions on the topic. In working towards a conceptual elucidation, the author maintains that there are three primary accounts of the oceanic state: the metaphysical one of Romain Rolland, the developmental one of Sigmund Freud, and the cognitive-perceptual one of Anton Ehrenzweig. Based on the notion of modal contact, he argues that the accounts share a general theoretical structure that establishes as the necessary criterion for all oceanic states the loosening of ego boundarie…

Superresolved digital in-line holographic microscopy for high-resolution lensless biological imaging.

2010

Digital in-line holographic microscopy (DIHM) is a modern approach capable of achieving micron-range lateral and depth resolutions in three-dimensional imaging. DIHM in combination with numerical imaging reconstruction uses an extremely simplified setup while retaining the advantages provided by holography with enhanced capabilities derived from algorithmic digital processing. We introduce superresolved DIHM incoming from time and angular multiplexing of the sample spatial frequency information and yielding in the generation of a synthetic aperture (SA). The SA expands the cutoff frequency of the imaging system, allowing submicron resolutions in both transversal and axial directions. The pr…

Robust three-dimensional best-path phase-unwrapping algorithm that avoids singularity loops.

2009

In this paper we propose a novel hybrid three-dimensional phase-unwrapping algorithm, which we refer to here as the three-dimensional best-path avoiding singularity loops (3DBPASL) algorithm. This algorithm combines the advantages and avoids the drawbacks of two well-known 3D phase-unwrapping algorithms, namely, the 3D phase-unwrapping noise-immune technique and the 3D phase-unwrapping best-path technique. The hybrid technique presented here is more robust than its predecessors since it not only follows a discrete unwrapping path depending on a 3D quality map, but it also avoids any singularity loops that may occur in the unwrapping path. Simulation and experimental results have shown that …

I am right here with you - Constructing presence in distributed teams

2013

Based on a naturalistic research approach and observational data from real-life distributed teamwork, this paper illustrates how members of virtual teams in today's knowledge-intensive work places can construct and negotiate (social) presence together. Instead of seeing presence as an individual's interpretation and linking it with perceptual illusion of non-mediation or the assumed traits of chosen communication media, this paper sees presence as being socially constructed in interaction. The paper offers critique towards existing models of computer-mediated presence and offers new directions for research.

Not so different altogether: Putting Lean and sociotechnical design into practice in a process industry

2021

Purpose: The shop-floor organization under lean production (LP) has been hotly debated for about three decades. As this organization concept leaves considerable room for interpretation, the content of lean-inspired changes can vary widely. This paper pleads for a contingency view of how LP is implemented and how the outcomes of lean-inspired changes rely on users’ interpretations of the concept in particular production contexts.Design/methodology/approach: A case study was conducted in two large Norwegian chemical plants. Data from the observations and interviews were supplemented by interviews with top managers in 2017 and 2018. The first author also followed a management audit in one plan…

Educación patrimonial y fotografía estereoscópica: intervención didácti

2019
