The Work of Hermeneutic Phenomenology
2020
This paper is an illustration of the application of a hermeneutic phenomenological study. The theory of meaning and interpretation, drawing on philosophical hermeneutics and the work of Gadamer and Heidegger, and its alignment with phenomenological thought is presented. The paper explains and aims to make visible how key concerns in relation to the fusion of horizons, hermeneutic understanding, hermeneutic circle and hermeneutic phenomenological attitude were implemented. The purpose is to provide practical guidance and illustrate a fully worked up example of hermeneutic phenomenological work as research praxis. This present paper makes a case that hermeneutic phenomenological work is deta…
Using Corpus Linguistics as a research and training tool for Public Service Interpreting (PSI) in the legal sector
2017
Public Service Translation has for long been the ‘forgotten voice’ in PSI studies but it is arguably a valuable linguistic support for legal institutions and for training interpreters in the legal sector. Given that interpreters in the legal system in Italy often tend to ‘double-up’ as legal translators (to make a living) the line between the two is often hazy. Hybrid modalities like sight translation of legal and administrative documents is also a ‘borderline’ feature of these intertwined professions. The main aim of this paper is to describe how parallel and monolingual corpora can be used to train public service interpreters in double roles (translators, interpreters), namely by using co…

Teaching audio‑visual translation at the “French Philology level 0” course: methods, contents, clues
In the face of a sensible diminution of the number of high‑school graduates able to communicate in French well enough to follow the “classical” French Philology course, many Polish universities offer their students the possibility of studying “French Philology level 0”. One of the key skills developed by this course is translation, including basic audio‑visual translation competences. The paper shows some examples of translator training clues that have been worked out at the Opole University.
English in interpretation to Finnish Sign Language : the forms and functions of chaining sequences in educational interpreting
2017
Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin ketjutusta (chaining) kieleilyn (languaging) käytänteenä viittomakielen tulkkauksessa. Tutkimuskysymyksinä esitettiin, mitä semioottisia resursseja viittomakielen tulkit käyttivät englantia sisältävissä ketjutussekvensseissä sekä mitä funktioita em. sekvensseillä oli. Tutkimuksessa tuotettiin yksityiskohtaista kuvausta autenttisesta aineistosta. Tutkimuskohteena oli kolme englannin kielestä suomalaiselle viittomakielelle tulkattua korkeakoululuentoa. Luennot videoitiin ja niistä paikannettiin ne kohdat, joissa tulkkeessa esiintyi englantia. Nämä kohdat annotoitiin käyttäen ELAN-annotointiohjelmaa. Englantia sisältävät ketjutussekvenssit jaoteltiin muodon ja …
Formulaicity in constrained communication : an intermodal approach
2021
