"So you're saying": the interrogation of Jordan Peterson
2021
<p class="p1">In this article, I analyse the infamous Cathy Newman interview with Jordan Peterson on the 16th of January 2018 and subsequent viewer comments on Channel 4's YouTube channel. My first hypothesis is that Newman's frequent attribution of statements to Peterson using the now notorious "so you are saying" gambit (YSG) is what triggered outrage among Peterson's followers, which, in turn, generated media interest. My second hypothesis is that the interview is best understood as a series of Face threats by Newman on Peterson using the YSG. To ascertain if my hypotheses are true, I performed corpus linguistic analyses on the interview and comments to provide objective descriptio…
Indoctrinated, but not Incurable? Klaus Mann's Interrogation of German Prisoners of War in 1944
2011
It has been stated that ‘die personlichen Erfahrungen […] mit deutschen Kriegsgefangenen zu Ende des Krieges’ led to disillusion and disappointment among the German exiles who fought in the war against Hitler.1 This disappointment manifested itself in the many conflicts between former exiles on the one hand and representatives of the governments of their host nations as well as fellow Germans on the other. Like Stefan Heym, Hans Habe and others, the writer in exile Klaus Mann felt obliged to devote himself to the war against National Socialism, not only in his works, but also as a man of action. As a member of the Psychological Warfare Branch of the Fifth Army he worked in a propaganda unit…
Experimental characterization of bodycentric passive RFID systems
2011
Recent progresses in the design of wearable RFID tag antennas stimulate the idea of passive bodycentric systems wherein the required power to drive the wearable tags is directly scavenged from the interrogation signal emitted by the reader unit. While active bodycentric links have been extensively investigated, the feasibility of passive systems is still questionable due to the poor sensitivity of the tags and to the modest read distances. This paper describes an articulated measurement campaign with textile wearable low-profile tags in the UHF RFID band. It is demonstrated that both on-body and off-body links are feasible with a power budget fully compliant with the available technology. T…
Feasibility of Body-centric Systems by Using passive textile RFID tags

VISUAL BIASES IN TELEVISION CAMPAIGN COVERAGE
1982
Based on the results of an interrogation of cameramen who were considered experts for the application of camera techniques, a content analysis of camera positions in presenting the two candidates for the office of the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1976 election was carried out. In addition, all verbal statements by journalists on positive and negative reactions of the public toward the two candidates as well as the optical display of positive and negative reactions were analyzed. Visual biases could be found evaluating the application of camera techniques by judgments of cameramen and confronting verbal and visual contents of television campaign coverage.
Interrogator intonation and memory encoding performance.
2019
Based on recent findings that interrogator intonation can enhance interrogative suggestibility during recall phases, the present study tested influences of interrogator intonation on memory performance even as early as at the encoding stage. We experimentally manipulated interrogator intonation during encoding of a story to be recalled in immediate and delayed subsequent memory tests (Experiment 1, N = 50). As expected, a symmetrically structuring vs. an isolating-emphasizing speaking style generally increased the amount of freely recalled details. In a more fine-grained experiment (N = 50), we additionally manipulated emphasized story details and tested recall rates for peripheral, neutral…
G1 rational blend interpolatory schemes: a comparative study
2012
Interpolation of triangular meshes is a subject of great interest in many computer graphics related applications, as, for example, gaming and realtime rendering. One of the main approaches to interpolate the positions and normals of the mesh vertices is the use of parametric triangular Bezier patches. As it is well known, any method aiming at constructing a parametric, tangent plane (G^1) continuous surface has to deal with the vertex consistency problem. In this article, we propose a comparison of three methods appeared in the nineties that use a particular technique called rational blend to avoid this problem. Together with these three methods we present a new scheme, a cubic Gregory patc…
Science as a quest : Don Quixote, neuroscience and the interrogation of truth
2015
Neuroscientist Rodrigo Quian Quiroga has wondered whether «scientists, embarked upon their personal quests – their quixotic endeavours – spend their time just thinking». This adjectival invocation of Cervantes’s Don Quixote pitches science as an epic quest that equates scientific rationality with the Don’s delusions. Does science quest after truth in a quixotic, literary way that philosopher Nicholas Maxwell terms «rationalistically neurotic»?
A SEARCH FOR PAIR-PRODUCED CHARGED HIGGS BOSONS IN Z0 DECAYS
1990
The utilitarian representation of sport in Rumania, a brake in the development of leisure practice. Since the countries of central Europe entered the liberal sphere influence, the consumptions of possessions and services develop there. We observe a movement of tutellaire and ideological emancipation of the sports organizations, but the practice of popular physical activities delays developing. If, on the ground, we notice the appearance of an structured professionally offer, contrary to all expectations, it does not pull a real increase of consumption. This situation which rises in inferred paradox a cultural interrogation on the previous history of these brakes. Historically, the sport dur…
La legge crudele. L’amministrazione della giustizia di Roma nel IV secolo d.C. tra amplificazione e realtà
2013
Realism and accuracy of the testimony by the rhetor Libanius of Antioch on the arbitrary administration of justice by the governors of Syriac metropolis impress the mark of cruelty upon the judicial practice of the time. The study of the criminal justice system leads to a sociological analysis, although the juridical and social status was losing importance in light of the gravity of the crimen.
