Association of Maternal Iodine Status With Child IQ: A Meta-Analysis of Individual Participant Data

2019

Abstract Context Although the consequences of severe iodine deficiency are beyond doubt, the effects of mild to moderate iodine deficiency in pregnancy on child neurodevelopment are less well established. Objective To study the association between maternal iodine status during pregnancy and child IQ and identify vulnerable time windows of exposure to suboptimal iodine availability. Design Meta-analysis of individual participant data from three prospective population-based birth cohorts: Generation R (Netherlands), INMA (Spain), and ALSPAC (United Kingdom); pregnant women were enrolled between 2002 and 2006, 2003 and 2008, and 1990 and 1992, respectively. Setting General community. Participa…

Brachytherapy organ dose estimation using Monte Carlo simulations of realistic patient models

2018

Radiation Therapy Planning Systems (RTPS) currently used in hospitals contain algorithms based on deterministic simplifications that do not properly consider electrons lateral transport in the areas where there are changes of density, and as a result, erroneous dose predictions could be produced. According to this, the present work proposes the use of Monte Carlo method in brachytherapy planning systems, which could affect positively on the radiotherapy treatment planning, since it provides results that are more accurate and takes into account the in homogeneities density variations. This paper presents a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation of a brachytherapy prostate treatment with I-125 seeds, us…

A cross-sectional survey of urinary iodine status in Latvia

2014

Background and objective: A nationwide survey of schoolchildren was conducted to detect regional differences in urinary iodine excretion in Latvia and to compare the results with data from the newborn thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) screening database as well with the results of a similar study performed in Latvia 10 years ago. Materials and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional school-based cluster survey of 915 children aged 9–12 years in 46 randomly selected schools in all regions of Latvia. Urine samples, questionnaires on the consumption of iodized salt and information on socioeconomic status were collected. TSH levels in newborns were also measured. Results: The median creatinine-…

Botulinum Toxin Type B Blocks Sudomotor Function Effectively: A 6 Month Follow Up

2003

This study analyzes the suppression of sweat gland activity by botulinum toxin type B. We injected botulinum toxin type B (between 2 and 1000 mouse units subcutaneously) in the lateral side of both lower legs in 15 healthy volunteers. Sweat tests were carried out before botulinum toxin type B injections, and at 3 wk, 3 mo, and 6 mo. We studied focal anhidrosis by iodine–starch staining and by capacitance hygrometry after carbachol iontophoresis, according to the quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test (QSART). Iodine starch staining indicated that a threshold dose of 8 mouse units botulinum toxin type B leads to anhidrotic skin spots (>4 cm2) after 3 wk. Duration of anhidrosis was prolonged…

Effects of sensitization on vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-induced relaxation and its concentration and binding in guinea-pig airways.

1993

We investigated the relaxant effect of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) in trachea and lung parenchyma from normal and sensitized guinea-pigs. A technique by which drug access was restricted to either the mucosal or the adventitial surface of tracheal rings was used. In intact trachea, concentration-response curves for VIP entering from the mucosal surface (pD2 = 6.61 +/- 0.06) were displaced to the right compared with those for adventitial entry (pD2 = 6.78 +/- 0.04). Epithelium removal produced a leftward shift (approximately 2.8-fold) in the mucosal VIP concentration-response curve. Sensitization did not alter the responsiveness (maximal effect) or sensitivity (pD2 values) of trac…

Multiparametric MRI and post implant CT-based dosimetry after prostate brachytherapy with iodine seeds: The higher the dose to the dominant index les…

2015

Abstract Purpose To determine whether post-implant MRI-based dosimetry of the Dominant Intra-prostatic Lesion (DIL) could best predict the occurrence of PSA bounce after prostate brachytherapy. Methods and materials We selected 66 patients with a low risk prostate cancer treated with 125 I prostate brachytherapy as monotherapy. Post-implant dosimetry based on day 30 CT-scan and multiparametric MRI co-registration was generated: planned D 90, D 95, V 100, V 150 values were calculated for each DIL. Bounce was defined as a PSA elevation ⩾0.2ng/mL from the previous baseline value followed by a decrease to or below the prior nadir with no additional treatment. Results After a median follow-up of…

Smart composite films of nanometric thickness based on copper-iodine coordination polymers. Toward sensors.

2018

One-pot reactions between CuI and methyl or methyl 2-amino-isonicotinate give rise to the formation of two coordination polymers (CPs) based on double zig-zag Cu2I2 chains. The presence of a NH2 group in the isonicotinate ligand produces different supramolecular interactions affecting the Cu-Cu distances and symmetry of the Cu2I2 chains. These structural variations significantly modulate their physical properties. Thus, both CPs are semiconductors and also show reversible thermo/mechanoluminescence. X-ray diffraction studies carried out under different temperature and pressure conditions in combination with theoretical calculations have been used to rationalize the multi-stimuli-responsive …

Electrogeneration of Diiodoaurate in Dimethylsulfoxide on Gold Substrate and Localized Patterning

2016

International audience; A localized etching of gold surface by scanning electrochemical microscope technique is presented where a dimethylsulfoxide-based electrolyte charged with iodine is used. The electrogenerated triiodide ion at the platinum ultramicroelectrode tip (feedback mode) acts as an oxidant for gold surface. The effects of electrode diameter and the bias time have been investigated. The approach curve method was used to hold the electrode tip close to the gold surface. A scanning electron microscope is used to observe the etched gold surfaces where disk-shaped dots are generated. The diameter of these holes depends directly on the Pt electrode diameter and the bias time.

Vibrational characterization of the 1:1 iodine-benzene complex isolated in solid krypton.

2008

The structure and properties of a 1:1 iodine-benzene complex isolated in an inert krypton matrix at low temperature have been studied with infrared and resonance Raman spectroscopy and with MP2 calculations. The structure of the ground-state complex is found to be unsymmetric, and the I-I vibrational frequency is found to be red-shifted by 3.94 cm(-1) upon complexation. The experimental data agree well with computational results, leading to the conclusion that the I2-Bz complex structure is not axial but of above-bond type, identically with other halogen-benzene complexes.
