Computer modeling of metal colloid formation in tracks of swift heavy ions in ionic solids

Abstract We present results of computer modelling of the aggregation of primary radiation defects—F centers—in ionic crystals within tracks of swift heavy ions. We study how F-aggregate properties depend on the initial density of primary Frenkel defects in the track and its radius. The mean number of F centers in aggregates is typically very small, about five defects, which greatly complicates detection of expected metal colloids by ESR.

Radiation-induced point defects in simple oxides

Electrical properties of Au/CdZnTe/Au detectors grown by the boron oxide encapsulated Vertical Bridgman technique

Abstract In this work we report on the results of electrical characterization of new CdZnTe detectors grown by the Boron oxide encapsulated Vertical Bridgman technique (B-VB), currently produced at IMEM-CNR (Parma, Italy). The detectors, with gold electroless contacts, have different thicknesses (1 and 2.5 mm) and the same electrode layout, characterized by a central anode surrounded by a guard-ring electrode. Laser spectroscopy with an electrostatic ConeTrap

A compact electrostatic trap has been designed and installed as part of the recent upgrades to the IGISOL IV facility. The ConeTrap provides an in vacuo optical pumping site for low energy (800 eV) ionic ensembles available for interaction periods of 10-100 ms. At present, 6.7(3) % of injected mass A=98 ions can be trapped, stored for 5 ms, extracted and transported to a laser-ion interaction region. This fraction represents those ions for which no perturbation to total energy or energy spread is observed. 0.1-10 MeV Neutron Soft Error Rate in Accelerator and Atmospheric Environments

Neutrons with energies between 0.1-10 MeV can significantly impact the Soft Error Rate (SER) in SRAMs manufactured in scaled technologies, with respect to high-energy neutrons. Their contribution is evaluated in accelerator, ground level and avionic (12 km of altitude) environments. Experimental cross sections were measured with monoenergetic neutrons from 144 keV to 17 MeV, and results benchmarked with Monte Carlo simulations. It was found that even 144 keV neutrons can induce upsets due to elastic scattering. Moreover, neutrons in the 0.1-10 MeV energy range can induce more than 60% of the overall upset rate in accelerator applications, while their contribution can exceed 18% in avionics.…

A study of a helium-jet ion guide for an on-line isotope separator

Abstract A new method based on helium-jet techniques permits primary recoil ions, produced in radioactive decay or in nuclear reactions to be run directly through a mass separator. Results obtained with a 227 Ac source promise qualities complementary with those obtained with conventional ion sources and indicate an overall efficiency of the order of 10%. Preliminary results with 20 Na recoils from the 20 Ne(p,n)-reaction indicate that most of the ionic species transported out from the target chamber are negatively charged.

Abstract Successful utilization of medical isotopes in the radiolabeling reactions to a significant degree depends on the technically achievable specific activity. In this respect, the Szilard-Chalmers effect is considered in detail as a radiochemical tool to increase the specific activity of radionuclides produced by direct nuclear reactions. In the present study, a physico-chemical model is described utilizing the specific aspects of thermodynamically and kinetically stabilised metal-ligand complexes.
