Optimum core dimension for minimizing proximity effect losses of an AC inductor for a galvanically isolated PV inverter

2012

In this paper, it is shown how winding proximity effect losses in an existing AC inductor can be reduced without changing the actual winding. Instead, the core dimensions are changed with significant effects. For this purpose, Maxwell (ANSOFT) electromagnetic software package is used to investigate flux patterns and their influence on eddy current losses in the windings. Various core dimensions are analyzed with respect to flux patterns, and a design where the flux encloses a minimum number of winding layers is found. This significantly reduces the high frequency resistance of the windings up to 62.2% in comparison with the original design. The results are also explained in terms of the win…

A compact system for high precision time measurements ( < 14 ps RMS) and integrated data acquisition for a large number of channels

2011

A high precision ( < 14 ps RMS time resolution) and high channel density ( ~ 256 channels) Time to Digital Converter (TDC) module (realized in FPGAs) with integrated DAQ is presented. The data is transported over up to 8 Gigabit-Ethernet or optical links with up to 3 Gb/s. Slow-Control information is transported over the same links. It can be attached directly to the detector, which allows the elimination of long cables and crate systems. The full 256 channel TDCs are expected to use approximately 30 W electrical power. The module size is 20 cm by 23 cm. Power is provided by a galvanically isolated 48 V low noise power supply. AddOn-boards adapt to the special needs of the detector to be re…

Assessment of DEMO WCLL breeding blanket primary heat transfer system isolation valve absorbed doses due to activated water

2020

Abstract Within the framework of the activities foreseen by the EUROfusion action on the cooling water activation assessment for a DEMO reactor equipped with a Water Cooled Lithium Lead Breeding Blanket (WCLL BB), the University of Palermo is involved in the investigation of the absorbed dose induced by the decay of nitrogen radioisotopes produced by water activation, in the main components (e.g. isolation valves) of both First Wall (FW) and Breeder Zone (BZ) cooling circuits. The aim of this work is to assess the spatial distribution of the absorbed dose in the DEMO Upper Pipe Chase (UPC), focusing the attention on the space neighbouring a typical isolation valve of the Primary Heat Transf…

Isolation and purification of plasmids from Bacteroides fragilis using rubidium trichloroacetate density gradient centrifugation.

1983

A rapid and easy final purification method is described for the isolation of plasmids from B. fragilis. Using RbTCA density gradient centrifugation in an airfuge ultracentrifuge ccc plasmid DNA can be separated from RNA, residual chromosomal DNA, linear and oc plasmid DNA. Pure ccc plasmid DNA is obtained from cultures of between 1 ml and 2 l in less than one day.

Phylogeographical structure in the coastal speciesSenecio rodriguezii(Asteraceae), a narrowly distributed endemic Mediterranean plant

2009

Aim Our goals were (1) to assess the levels of chloroplast DNA variation in a narrowly distributed plant restricted to continental islands, (2) to ascertain whether a phylogeographical structure is present in plants restricted to coastal linear systems, and (3) to interpret the results in the light of the known palaeogeography of these islands. Location The Eastern Balearic Islands (Majorca and Minorca) in the Western Mediterranean Basin. Methods Sampling included 134 individuals from 28 populations of Senecio rodriguezii covering the entire range of the species. Sequences of the chloroplast genome (trnT-trnL spacer) were obtained and parameters of population genetic diversity and substruct…

Model for Generation of Large Numbers of Primary, Inflammatory Skin-Derived Neutrophils, and Macrophages

2012

Tissue macrophages and inflammatory neutrophils represent important cells of the innate immune system responsible for various important tasks, i.e., elimination of pathogens and/or granuloma formation. Isolation of large numbers of primary phagocytes is vital for research with these cells. Within this protocol, we present a strategy for isolation of large numbers of inflammatory neutrophils and macrophages from murine skin that allows for follow-up in vivo or in vitro studies.

Hyperspectral image classification using CNN: Application to industrial food packaging

2021

Abstract During food tray packaging, some contamination may exist due to the presence of undesired objects. It is essential to detect anomalies during the packaging process in order to discard the faulty tray and avoid human consumption. This study demonstrates the on-line classification feasibility when using hyperspectral imaging systems for real-time food packaging control by using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) as a classifier in heat-sealed food trays. A hyperspectral camera is used to capture individual food tray information and fed to a CNN classifier to detect faulty food trays with object contamination. The proposed system is able to detect up to eleven different contamination…

An organelle-specific protein landscape identifies novel diseases and molecular mechanisms.

2016

Cellular organelles provide opportunities to relate biological mechanisms to disease. Here we use affinity proteomics, genetics and cell biology to interrogate cilia: poorly understood organelles, where defects cause genetic diseases. Two hundred and seventeen tagged human ciliary proteins create a final landscape of 1,319 proteins, 4,905 interactions and 52 complexes. Reverse tagging, repetition of purifications and statistical analyses, produce a high-resolution network that reveals organelle-specific interactions and complexes not apparent in larger studies, and links vesicle transport, the cytoskeleton, signalling and ubiquitination to ciliary signalling and proteostasis. We observe sub…

Identification of Trans-Golgi Network Proteins in Arabidopsis thaliana Root Tissue

2014

Knowledge of protein subcellular localization assists in the elucidation of protein function and understanding of different biological mechanisms that occur at discrete subcellular niches. Organelle-centric proteomics enables localization of thousands of proteins simultaneously. Although such techniques have successfully allowed organelle protein catalogues to be achieved, they rely on the purification or significant enrichment of the organelle of interest, which is not achievable for many organelles. Incomplete separation of organelles leads to false discoveries, with erroneous assignments. Proteomics methods that measure the distribution patterns of specific organelle markers along densit…
