Word assembly through minimal forbidden words

2006

AbstractWe give a linear-time algorithm to reconstruct a finite word w over a finite alphabet A of constant size starting from a finite set of factors of w verifying a suitable hypothesis. We use combinatorics techniques based on the minimal forbidden words, which have been introduced in previous papers. This improves a previous algorithm which worked under the assumption of stronger hypothesis.

On operads, bimodules and analytic functors

2017

We develop further the theory of operads and analytic functors. In particular, we introduce a bicategory that has operads as 0-cells, operad bimodules as 1-cells and operad bimodule maps as 2-cells, and prove that this bicategory is cartesian closed. In order to obtain this result, we extend the theory of distributors and the formal theory of monads.

Weak-field regime of the generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravity

2021

In this work we explore the dynamics of the generalized hybrid metric-Palatini theory of gravity in the weak-field, slow-motion regime. We start by introducing the equivalent scalar-tensor representation of the theory, which contains two scalar degrees of freedom, and perform a conformal transformation to the Einstein frame. Linear perturbations of the metric in a Minkowskian background are then studied for the metric and both scalar fields. The effective Newton constant and the PPN parameter $\gamma$ of the theory are extracted after transforming back to the (original) Jordan frame. Two particular cases where the general method ceases to be applicable are approached separately. A compariso…

Factors in Assessing Recidivism Risk in Young Offenders

2020

The research aims to identify if the accumulation of protective and/or risk factors might predict the risk of recidivism in juvenile delinquents and determine the relative weight of both types of factors in the predictions themselves. The risk of criminal recidivism was assessed with the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk in Youth&mdash

Estado de derecho y práctica de los derechos humanos

2016

This article is divided in two parts. In the first one it faces the concepts of (and relationship between) the rule of law and human rights. In the second one, this topic will be analyzed from the point of view of the evolution of law, what implies also the evolution of the rule of law. In the first part, the aim is to show that rule of law and human rights are two different but complementary practices, both able to realize different aspects of justice, both necessary for the success of law. The rule of law regards the way of decision making for coordination; human rights aim for the protection of fundamental interests of human beings. In different points these two practices interact, but i…

International Successions in Spain: The Impact of a New EU Regulation

2009

ABSTRACTThe arrangement of cross-border successions is a real challenge nowadays for both citizens and authorities due to the multicultural profile of today’s societies together with the current diversity of regulations, both at the substantive and conflicts levels. On 14 October 2009, the European Union adopted a new Proposal for a Regulation on international successions, a comprehensive instrument which will entail the harmonization within the EU of the conflicts regulation of cross-borders inheritances. The text finally adopted will necessarily have to provide an adequate equilibrium of the interests of people living in Europe to be successful. Material justice should not only focus on t…

Fitness of Members of Supervisory Board

2015

This chapter deals with the fitness of members of supervisory boards. Since 2009, German insurance regulatory law has provided internal qualification standards for the supervisory board members of insurance companies. In accordance with Paragraph 7a, sec. 4, clause 1 of the VAG [German Insurance Supervision Act], the members of supervisory boards must be able to fulfill their tasks and supervisory functions in accordance with their level of expertise. This new requirement comports with the previous standards of German corporate law, established by the BGH [German Federal Court of Justice] in its “Hertie”-ruling. As such, this ruling will also serve as a basis to interpret the expertise requ…

RISK OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY IN FRAIL AND PRE-FRAIL OLDER ADULTS:RESULTS FROM A META-ANALYSIS AND EXPLORATORY META-REGRESSI…

2017

Frailty is common and associated with poorer outcomes in the elderly, but its role as potential cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor requires clarification. We thus aimed to meta-analytically evaluate the evidence of frailty and pre-frailty as risk factors for CVD. Two reviewers selected all studies comparing data about CVD prevalence or incidence rates between frail/pre-frail vs. robust. The association between frailty status and CVD in cross-sectional studies was explored by calculating and pooling crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs)+/- 95% confidence intervals (CIs); the data from longitudinal studies were pooled using the adjusted hazard ratios (HRs). Eighteen cohorts with a total …

Investigation of antihypertensive class, dementia, and cognitive decline: a meta-analysis

2020

ObjectiveHigh blood pressure is one of the main modifiable risk factors for dementia. However, there is conflicting evidence regarding the best antihypertensive class for optimizing cognition. Our objective was to determine whether any particular antihypertensive class was associated with a reduced risk of cognitive decline or dementia using comprehensive meta-analysis including reanalysis of original participant data.MethodsTo identify suitable studies, MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO and preexisting study consortia were searched from inception to December 2017. Authors of prospective longitudinal human studies or trials of antihypertensives were contacted for data sharing and collaboration.…

Association between physical performance and sense of autonomy in outdoor activities and life-space mobility in community-dwelling older people

2014

Objectives. To study the relationship between physical performance and sense of autonomy in outdoor activities with life-space mobility—the spatial area a person purposefully moves through in daily life—in community-dwelling older people. Design. Cross-sectional analyses of baseline data of the Life-Space Mobility in Old Age cohort study. Setting. Structured interviews in participants' homes. Participants. Community-dwelling people aged 75 to 90 (N = 848). Measurements. Sense of autonomy outdoors (Impact on Participation and Autonomy questionnaire subscale), life-space mobility (Life-Space Assessment; University of Alabama, Birmingham Study of Aging), and Short Physical Performance Battery.…
