De-epoxidation of Violaxanthin after Reconstitution into Different Carotenoid Binding Sites of Light-harvesting Complex II

2001

In higher plants, the de-epoxidation of violaxanthin (Vx) to antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin is required for the pH-dependent dissipation of excess light energy as heat and by that process plays an important role in the protection against photo-oxidative damage. The de-epoxidation reaction was investigated in an in vitro system using reconstituted light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) and a thylakoid raw extract enriched in the enzyme Vx de-epoxidase. Reconstitution of LHCII with varying carotenoids was performed to replace lutein and/or neoxanthin, which are bound to the native complex, by Vx. Recombinant LHCII containing either 2 lutein and 1 Vx or 1.6 Vx and 1.1 neoxanthin or 2.8 Vx per mono…

A Deeper Insight into the Postpolymerization Modification of Polypenta Fluorophenyl Methacrylates to Poly(N -(2-Hydroxypropyl) Methacrylamide)

2014

This work provides a detailed insight into the synthesis of N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMA) polymers employing the activated ester approach. In this approach, polypenta fluorophenyl methacrylate (PFPMA)-activated ester polymers are synthesized by the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and transferred into HPMA-based systems by the use of 2-hydroxypropylamine. To prove quantitative conversion in the absence of side reactions, special attention is devoted to investigate different reaction conditions by different analytical methods ((1) H, (19) F, inverse-gated (13) C NMR, and zeta potential measurements). Furthermore the influence of common solvent…

Enlarged pore size in nanoparticulated bimodal porous silicas: Improving accessibility

2016

Abstract Mass-transfer kinetics seems to be highly favored in siliceous materials constructed from the aggregation of mesoporous nanoparticles. Besides intra-particle mesopores, over the course of the aggregation process an inter-particle (textural) large pore system is generated. Diffusion constrains through the resulting hierarchically structured pore systems mainly depend on the characteristics of the intra-particle mesopores. By using alkanes as swelling agents, we have been able to significantly increase the intra-particle mesopore size in previously well characterized UVM-7 materials. The Winsor-III-like behavior associated with the presence of alkanes in the hydro-alcoholic reaction …

A study of the enolization of some alkyl ketones in lyomesophases formed by alkylammonium surfactants

1988

The kinetics of enolization of acetone, 3-pentanone, and 6-undecanone have been studied in lyotropic systems in the isotropic, nematic, and lamellar phases. The data, analysed in terms of spontaneous and acid-catalyzed rate constants, do not show any relevant influence of the physical nature of the phase. Effects are instead observed in relation to the length of the alkyl chains of the ketones and the type of the amphiphilic molecule. 6-undecanone has a surprising effect in stabilizing ordered mesophases.

Crystallization Behaviour at High Cooling Rates of Two Polypropylenes

1993

Phase distribution of quenched samples of two isotactic polypropylenes, having different molecular weight distributions, was evaluated by a deconvolution procedure of WAXD spectra. The dependence on cooling rate of the two resins shows the low molecular weights rich polymer is characterized by a faster kinetics with an α-monoclinic to mesomorphic transition taking place at higher cooling rates.

Hyperbranched-linear-hyperbranched ABA-type block copolymers based on poly(ethylene oxide) and polyglycerol

2009

BACKGROUND: Until recently, hyperbranched polymers were thought to be ill-defined materials that were not useful as building blocks for well-defined complex polymer architectures. It is a current challenge to develop strategies that offer rapid access to well-defined hyperbranched block copolymers. RESULTS: A convenient three-step protocol for the synthesis of double-hydrophilic hyperbranched–linear–hyperbranched ABA-type triblock copolymers based on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) is presented. The Bola-type polymers exhibiting an aliphatic polyether structure were prepared from a linear (lin) linPG-b-PEO-b-linPG precursor triblock. The materials exhibit lo…

Crystallization kinetics in relation to polymer processing

1993

Phase distribution of quenched samples has been determined by a deconvolution procedure of WAXS spectra in a wide range of cooling rates. The informations collected together with isothermal and DSC results provide a very wide set of data on the crystallization kinetics of polymers relevant which covers conditions encountered in most polymer processing operations. They have been compared with predictions of a non-isothermal crystallization model assuming two independent and parallel crystallization processes competing during solidification.

Pressure-induced formation of diblock copolymer "micelles" in supercritical fluids. A combined study by small angle scattering experiments and mean-f…

2004

We developed a simple time-dependent mean-field theory to describe the phase separation kinetics of either homopolymers or AB-diblock copolymers in supercritical (SC) fluids. The model, previously used to describe the phase behavior of AB-block copolymers under the assumption of strong solvent selectivity for just one copolymer chain, has been extended to study the kinetics of the phase separation process. Time resolved small angle x-ray scattering (TR-SAXS) measurements have been performed on different AB-diblock copolymers containing a perfluorinated chain and dissolved in SC-CO2. The data obtained over a wide range of pressure and temperature confirm our theoretical predictions. Particul…

Confinement-induced screening of hydrodynamic interactions and spinodal decomposition: Multiscale simulations of colloid-polymer mixtures

2012

Phase separation kinetics of a colloid-polymer mixture confined between two planar repulsive walls is studied by a multiscale simulation approach. Colloids and polymers are described by particles interacting with continuous potentials suitable for molecular-dynamics simulation, while hydrodynamic interactions mediated by solvent particles are accounted for by the multiparticle collision dynamics method. Varying the distance D between the walls and the character of the boundary conditions, the interplay of structure formation parallel and perpendicular to the walls is studied, and the effect of hydrodynamics on the growth of domain size ld(t) with time t is elucidated. Only for slip boundary…
