AbstractThis short paper seeks to reformulate and refine the notion of sociolinguistic scales as relative scope of understandability, thus drawing the notion fully into the realm of semiotics, rather than in the rather unproductive sphere of spatiotemporal and distributional interpretation where it has been deployed. Differences in scope of understandability are differences in the presupposability of signs, and such differences are not equivalent but stratified in a polycentric environment.   Tämän proseminaarityön tarkoituksena oli tutkia, miten maahanmuuttajan akkulturaation taso ja maahanmuuton aikainen ikä vaikuttavat saavutettuun suomen kielen osaamistasoon. Lisäksi tutkimuksen avulla yritettiin löytää mahdollisia eroja pakolaisten ja vapaaehtoisten maahanmuuttajien suomen kielen oppimiseen vaikuttavien asioiden välillä. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli täydentää aikaisempaa tutkimusta maahanmuuttajien isäntäkielen oppimisesta, koska aiempi tutkimus on keskittynyt lähes ainoastaan maihin, joiden pääkielenä käytetään englantia.  Vieraan kielen opiskelussa ja opettamisessa on käytetty pitkään apuvälineinä erilaisia äänitteitä. Kuitenkin vasta lähiaikoina äänitteitä on alettu käyttää myös luokkahuoneen ulkopuolella. Nykyisin monissa suomalaisissa peruskouluissa käytetään englannin kielen oppikirjoja, joissa tulee mukana myös oppilaan CD. Tämä CD on tarkoitettu oppilaan itsenäiseen käyttöön tukemaan vieraan kielen opiskelua kotona. Koska CD:n käyttö on vielä uutta, ei sitä ole tutkittukaan. First Evidence of Contourite Drifts in the North-Western Sicilian Active Continental Margin (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea)

We present the results of an integrated geomorphological and seismo-stratigraphic study based on high resolution marine data acquired in the north-western Sicilian continental margin. We document for the first time five contourite drifts (marked as EM1a, EM2b, EM2, EM3a, and EM3b), located in the continental slope at depths between ca. 400 and 1500 m. EM1a,b have been interpreted as elongated mounded drifts. EM1a,b are ca. 3 km long, 1.3 km wide, and have a maximum thickness of 36 m in their center that thins northwards, while EM1b is smaller with a thickness up to 24 m.
