Compte rendu de : Regenia Gagnier, Individualism, Decadence and Globalization. On the Relationship of Part to Whole, 1859–1920

2012

Regenia Gagnier’s knowledgeable and wide-ranging study explores various manifestations of Decadence and its links to different versions of globalisation. Taking her cue from Bourget’s well-known definition of the decadent style as the independence of the parts from the whole, she argues first that the development of the parts, as exemplified in the late-nineteenth century and early twentieth centuries, can be seen both as a thought experiment and, in some cases, as a real experiment concernin...

Although French learners studying at BTS level at the National School of Dairy Industry and Biotechnologies (ENILBio) in Poligny have studied English as a second language for several years, they often have difficulty not only understanding it, but more importantly speaking it. As a teacher, it is a problem I am faced with daily and to which I haven’t been able to find explanations or solutions. The aim of this research is to explore the reasons that explain why students often feel embarrassed when they have to speak the language in and outside school, and to question their own practices and representations. This work aims at understanding why BTS students don’t speak English – or speak it li…

2020

We analyze the three volumes of Romeo Lovera’s manual, Corso di Lingua francese a base intuitiva, which were intended for teaching French in secondary schools. The manual was first published in 1902 in Venice by Libreria editrice del Bollettino di Filologia Moderna, and there will be many reissues. Romeo Lovera is Italy's biggest supporter of methodological reform in the teaching of foreign languages ; it discloses, through the Bollettino di Filologia Moderna, new theories, scientific methods and their didactic applications. In their manuals, from the first lesson, through the direct and indirect intuition of the foreign language, the student learns to speak the French language by studying …

Problematics of Bonds in Hugh MacDiarmid's Poetry

2012

Hugh MacDiarmid is considered the most important Scottish poet of the 20th century. He is mostly celebrated for the Scots lyrics he wrote in the 1920s and his long poem A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle, published in 1926. Because of their fragmentation, the poems of the Thirties, most of which were part of the unpublished project Mature Art, and In Memoriam James Joyce (1955), have not attracted the same critical attention. However, they represent the culmination of a very complex stylistic crisis that this study offers to analyse thanks to the question of bonds, especially problematic bonds. The poetry portrays humanity torn by social division, treason and death, but it deals with loss too…

Le «sentiment» comme facteur sémantique : la «sémantique représentationnelle» entre la «linguistique psychologique» et le formalisme

2016

Psychological linguistics - Heymann Steinthal in Germany (1823-1899) and Aleksandr Potebnia in Russia (1835-1891) - has borrowed from the psychology of its time the model of “representative semantics” according to which meanings are representations (Vorstellungen) connected to words. Within this frame, “feeling” (Gefühl) or “feeling tonality” belongs to the verbal representation, in particular to the semantic mechanism. This is also the case of Karl Otto Erdmann’s (1858-1931) semantics which distinguishes within the meaning a “secondary meaning” (Nebensinn) and a “value of feeling” (Gefühlswert). Within the formalist approach (it deals with the “Russian formalism”, 1914-1929), the analysis …

"Nodier and sadism: the "monstrous turpitudes" of Smarra"

2021

Nodier studies have scarcely examined the relationship between Nodier and Sade, the first one having apparently done everything to lessen his interest in the sulphurous work of the marquis. However, little is known, Nodier is the inventor, or the propagator of the word “sadism” in the French language, which appeared for the first time in 1834, in the 8th edition of the "Dictionnaire Universel" by Boiste, that, precisely, revised, amended and largely amplified by Nodier. The objective of this article is to shed light on this immorality-stricken relationship between a writer concerned about his reputation and in search of respectability (Nodier was elected to the Académie française in 1833, a…

L’écriture et le graphisme à l’ère de la linguistique psychologique

2016

This study deals with the conception of “writing” within the German humanities during the « psychological turn » of the last half of the XIXth - the beginning of the XXth centuries. The focal point is “graphism” and “writing” understood as “expressive movements” (Ausdrucksbewegungen), this notion being bound to the concept of “verbal gesture” within the trend of “psychological linguistics” (1850-1930). Inspired initially by the morphological and physiognomonic tradition (J. Lavater, J. W. Goethe, J. Engel, C. Carus, Th. Piderit), this conception considers language as a particular kind of “expressive movements”. This vision comes back to the German psychology of consciousness elaborated by J…
