Rare earths release from dissolving atmospheric dust and their accumulation into crystallising halite. The dead-sea example

2023

: The industrial extraction of Y and lanthanides (hereafter defined as Rare Earth Elements, REE) often requires the achievement of leaching procedures removing these metals from primary rocks and their transfer in aqueous leachates or incorporated in newly forming soluble solids. These procedures are the most dangerous to the environment in relation to the composition of leachates. Hence, the recognition of natural settings where these processes currently occur, represents a worthy challenge for learning how to carry out similar industrial procedures under natural and more eco-friendly conditions. Accordingly, the REE distribution was studied in the brine of Dead Sea, a terminal evaporating…

Combined omics approaches reveal distinct responses between light and heavy rare earth elements in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

2022

International audience; The rapid development of green energy sources and new medical technologies contributes to the increased exploitation of rare earth elements (REEs). They can be subdivided into light (LREEs) and heavy (HREEs) REEs. Mining, industrial processing, and end-use practices of REEs has led to elevated environmental concentrations and raises concerns about their toxicity to organisms and their impact on ecosystems. REE toxicity has been reported, but its precise underlying molecular effects have not been well described. Here, transcriptomic and proteomic approaches were combined to decipher the molecular responses of the model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae to La (LREE) an…

Infrared evolved gas analysis during thermal investigation of lanthanum, europium and samarium carbonates

2003

Abstract The characterisation of rare earth elements carbonates (REECs) was performed by thermal analysis (TG–DTG) combined with simultaneous infrared evolved gas analysis–Fourier transform infrared (EGA–FTIR) spectroscopy. The TG–DTG curves were obtained using the Perkin-Elmer PC series TGA-7 thermogravimetric analyser in the temperature range 25–800 °C both in dynamic air and nitrogen atmosphere. La 2 (CO 3 ) 3 · n H 2 O, Eu 2 (CO 3 ) 3 · n H 2 O and Sm 2 (CO 3 ) 3 · n H 2 O were analysed, the dehydration and decarbonation steps were investigated and the water content was calculated. The trace rare earth elements in lanthanum, europium and samarium carbonates were determined by Philips PU…

Direct determination of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium in water by flow injection flame atomic spectroscopy, using a dilution chamber

1989

A simple procedure to carry out the direct analysis of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium in water by flow injection analysis (FIA) using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) or flame photometry (FP) has been developed, using a well stirred dilution chamber to extend the calibration range, and both a double injector and the merging zone technique to add a lanthanum solution to samples and standards. The results obtained in the analysis of real samples agree with those found by a batch flame atomic procedure. The use of the dilution chamber makes it possible to carry out the calibration using the dilution profile of a single concentrate standard for each element, and an empirical…

Laser heterodyne displacement measuring using PLZT frequency shifter

1991

Abstract The implementation of a frequency shifter based on lead lanthanum zirconate titanate ceramic (PLZT) and a voltage-controlled λ/4 plate is described. The capabilities of these elements are demonstrated with results from a Michelson-type laser heterodyne displacement measuring interferometer with 0.01 μm accuracy and 1 Hz display update rate.

Local structure of gallate proton conductors

2009

Lanthanum barium gallate proton conductors are based on disconnected GaO4 groups. The insertion of hydroxyls in the LaBaGaO4 network proceeds through self-doping with Ba2+, consequent O2- vacancy formation to fulfill charge neutrality. With a structural investigation on self-doped LaBaGaO4 oxides using synchrotron XRD and EXAFS on the Ga K-edge, we find that: (a) the GaO4 tetrahedra retain their size throughout the whole series; (b) the GaO4 tetrahedra rotate as rigid bodies on hydration, leading to the formation of a network of shorter O-O configurations that are stabilized by hydrogen bonds; (c) contraction of the lattice occurs along the a unit cell axis, as a consequence of an overall s…

Effects of different agents on the contractile response elicited by extracellular calcium after depletion of internal calcium stores in rat isolated …

1993

Abstract Noradrenaline, 1 μm, induced a sustained contractile response in rat isolated aorta in the presence and in the absence of extracellular Ca2+. After depleting the noradrenaline-sensitive intracellular Ca2+ stores, an increase in the basal tone of the aorta was observed during the incubation period in the presence of Ca2+ and in the absence of the agonist. We have tested the possible pathways through which Ca2+ enters the cell to refill the previously depleted Ca2+ pools, a process that is accompanied by an increase in tension. The magnitude of this increase does not depend on the presence of Mg2+ in the extracellular medium nor on the temperature, suggesting that it is mediated by a…
