Water-soluble polysaccharides from Opuntia stricta Haw. fruit peels: Recovery, identification and evaluation of their antioxidant activities

2015

Abstract Opuntia stricta Haw. is considered as one of the most common cactus plant growing in Tunisia. Extracting valuable compounds from its fruit peel, considered as by-product, is drawing more and more attention, making it on the verge of commercialization. Water-soluble polysaccharides were extracted from Opuntia stricta Haw. peels, and their chemical composition assessed using thin layer chromatography. The antioxidant activities of the extracted polysaccharides were assessed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging activity, total antioxidant activity and reducing power capacity. The extraction yield of water-soluble polysaccharides was 7.53±0.86%. The chemical comp…

Scanning tunneling microscopy investigation of tricycloquinazoline liquid crystals on gold

2000

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of hexaalkylthioether derivatives of tricycloquinazoline (TCQ) on Au(111) and tungsten diselenide (WSe2) were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The Au(111) surfaces were found to be etched by the thioether containing solutions. Corroded surfaces which are similar to gold surfaces that were coated with SAMs of thiols or disulfides were revealed by STM. Atomic adsorption spectroscopy proved that an amount of gold that corresponds to ca. 30% of a monolayer was dissolved in the assembly solutions. On gold, the aromatic cores of the molecules were found to be in face-on orientation. The alkyl substituents were in most cases folded upwards and s…

Conformational polymorphism and amphiphilic properties of resorcinarene octapodands

2010

o-Nitroaniline functionalized resorcinarene octapodands 1-5 with pendant methyl, ethyl, pentyl, nonyl or 1-decenyl groups, respectively, were synthesized and their structural properties investigated using X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. The upper rim of each podand is identical containing flexible side arms, in which rotation around the -OCH(2)CH(2)N- linkers create excellent possibilities for polymorphism. Two conformational polymorphs of acetone solvate of 2 were identified containing different side arm orientation and crystal packing. Compound 1 crystallized from acetone and nitromethane yielding two pseudopolymorphs with different packing motifs. The longer alkyl chains of 3…

Buildup of ultrathin multilayer films by a self-assembly process: III. Consecutively alternating adsorption of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes …

1992

A solid substrate with a positively charged planar surface is immersed in a solution containing an anionic polyelectrolyte and a monolayer of the polyanion is adsorbed. Since the adsorption is carried out at relatively high concentrations of polyelectrolyte, a large number of ionic residues remain exposed to the interface with the solution and thus the surface charge is effectively reversed. After rinsing in pure water the substrate is immersed in the solution containing a cationic polyelectrolyte. Again a monolayer is adsorbed but now the original surface charge is restored. By repeating both steps in a cyclic fashion, alternating multilayer assemblies of both polymers are obtained. The bu…

Physico-chemical investigation of nanostructures in liquid phases: Nickel chloride ionic clusters confined in sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate…

2009

The confinement of finite amounts of nickel chloride in the hydrophilic core of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) reverse micelles dispersed in n-heptane has been investigated by FT-IR, UV-vis-NIR and fluorescence spectroscopies. The analysis of experimental data consistently leads to hypothesize that NiCl(2) forms small size ionic clusters stabilized by a monolayer of oriented surfactant molecules. Due to confinement and interfacial effects, these ionic clusters show peculiar photophysical properties, which are different from those possessed by the bulk material. From NiCl(2)/AOT/n-heptane solutions, by evaporation of the organic solvent, interesting salt/surfactant nanocomposi…

Environmental analysis of chlorinated aromatic thioethers, sulphoxides and sulphones

1993

Abstract Chlorinated aromatic thioethers discussed here are polychlorinated dibenzothiophenes, thianthrenes and diphenylsulphides. Relatively little is known about their occurrence, behaviour and fate in the environment. Polychlorinated dibenzothiophenes and diphenylsulphides have recently been found to be formed in waste combustion and analysed in pulp mill effluents. Chlorinated sulphoxides and sulphones are usually metabolites or oxidation products of different chlorinated aromatic compounds. Different gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric techniques are used in the analysis of the chlorinated thioethers. The sulphoxides and sulphones, because of their higher polarity, can be isolated f…

Effect of polystyrene coating on pore, structural and chromatographic properties of silica packings

1990

Abstract A series of mesoporous and macroporous silicas with a mean pore diameter (PD), between 6 and 200 nm were reacted with a copolymer of styrene and vinyl-methyldiethoxysilane. The mass load of coated silicas corresponded to the monolayer capacity of the polymer calculated on the basis of the molecular cross-sectional area, except for the two mesoporous silcias of PD = 6 and 7.5 nm. Depending on the pore size, changes occurred in the specific surface area, as, between the native and the coated product. A comparison of the specific pore volume, νp, of silicas before and after polymer immobilization indicated a major loss of νp for the two mesoporous silicas whereas this effect was much …

t-Curves for n-Hexane

1992

The adsorption and desorption isotherms of n-hexane on powdered alumina and silica have been studied at 25°C over a wide range of relative pressures. Two t-curves for pore structure analysis are proposed, one for alumina (C = 12) and the second for silica (3 ≤ C ≤ 9). The statistical thickness t of the adsorbed n-hexane layer has been drawn as a function of the relative pressure assuming a maximal thickness of 0.55 nm and a mean thickness of 0.42 nm for the monolayer. The results are discussed in relation to previous published data.
