Evaluation of disruption of sediment connectivity and herbicide transport across a slope by grass strips using a magnetic iron oxide tracer
2018
Abstract The use of cover crops has been prescribed as a mitigation measure for offsite contamination, as they reduce sediment and agrochemical loads, thus reducing the hydrological connectivity of the land. However, there is the need to quantify its effectiveness for specific agrochemicals in broader range of conditions, to validate management for its safe environmental use. The objectives of the present study were: (1) to explore the use of simulated rainfall and magnetic iron oxide to understand the impact of vegetation strips on runoff and soil losses at the plot scale and, (2) to evaluate the effectiveness of vegetation strips in buffering sediment and herbicides coming from bare soil …
Do Changes in Tumor Blood Flow Necessarily Lead to Changes in Tissue Oxygenation and in Bioenergetic Status?
1994
An increasing number of investigations carried out in recent years provide evidence suggesting that “chronic” decreases in tumor blood flow and/or tissue oxygenation (e.g., during tumor growth) or acute declines in the tissue perfusion (e.g., following therapeutic measures) might be accompanied by significant reductions in the energy status. In several instances, positive correlations between energy status and tumor blood flow or oxygenation have been reported (Lilly et al., 1985; Evelhoch et al., 1986; Tozer et al., 1989; Vaupel et al., 1989a, 1989b; Steen and Graham, 1991), and these investigations have led to the conclusion that blood flow may be the limiting factor in determining the bi…
Clinical practice format for choosing a second-line disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug in early rheumatoid arthritis after failure of 6 months' fi…
2006
International audience; BACKGROUND: The objective was to develop a clinical practice format for choosing a second-line disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) after a 6-month course of a first-line DMARD in patients with early RA. METHODS: A panel of 34 experts selected treatment option from various scenarios using the Thurstone pairwise method. The experts had to choose between two proposed DMARDs without proposing other options. The scenarios were obtained using the three items: DAS28, rheumatoid factor status and radiographic structural damage. A sample of 240 among 480 scenarios for each expert was taken at random. Responses given by at least 20% of the experts were considered per…
Gender differences in motivation and barriers for the practice of physical exercise in adolescence

A total of 852 adolescents between 12 and 17 years of age were evaluated (M = 14.86, SD = 1.67), randomly selected among a population of secondary school and Baccalaureate students. We applied an &ldquo
Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI parameters as biomarkers for the effect of vatalanib in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer.
2014
ABSTRACT: Aims: To assess the utility of dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI parameters in the demonstration of early antiangiogenic effects and as prognostic biomarkers in second-line treatment of advanced-stage non-small-cell lung cancer with vatalanib. Patients & methods: The transfer constant (Ktrans) and the initial area under the contrast concentration–time curve at 60 s (AUC60) were assessed in 46 patients. Changes were compared with response evaluation from computed tomography imaging and Response Evaluation Criteria In Solid Tumors guidelines. Results: Statistically significant mean reductions in Ktrans (38.4%; p < 0.0001) and AUC60 (24.9%; p < 0.0001) were found at day 2. Af…
In vivo genotoxicity of selected herbicides in the mouse bone-marrow micronucleus test
1997
The herbicides alachlor, atrazine, terbuthylazine, gluphosinate-ammonium, isoproturon, pendimethaline and trifluralin were tested for genotoxicity in the mouse bone-marrow micronucleus test (MNT). Both atrazine and trifluraline caused a significant increase in the number of micronuclei at doses of 1,400 mg/kg body weight in female mice only. Alachlor, terbuthylazine, gluphosinate-ammonium, isoproturon and pendimethaline did not have any genotoxic effect in the mouse bone-marrow micronucleus test in either female or male animals.
Double Drug Delivery Using Capped Mesoporous Silica Microparticles for the Effective Treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease
2019
[EN] Silica mesoporous microparticles loaded with both rhodamine B fluorophore (S1) or hydrocortisone (S2), and capped with an olsalazine derivative, are prepared and fully characterized. Suspensions of Si and S2 in water at an acidic and a neutral pH show negligible dye/drug release, yet a notable delivery took place when the reducing agent sodium dithionite is added because of hydrolysis of an azo bond in the capping ensemble. Additionally, olsalazine fragmentation induced 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) release. In vitro digestion models show that S1 and S2 solids are suitable systems to specifically release a pharmaceutical agent in the colon. In vivo pharmacokinetic studies in rats show …
Phase II trial of ptk787/zk 222584 (vatalanib) administered orally once-daily or in two divided daily doses as second-line monotherapy in relapsed or…
2011
ABSTRACT Background The objective of this multicenter, prospective uncontrolled phase II trial was to determine efficacy, safety and tolerability of vatalanib, an oral angiogenesis inhibitor targeting all known vascular endothelial growth factor receptors, in the second-line treatment of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Patients and methods Patients with stage IIIB/IV NSCLC-proven tumor progression during or after one platinum-based chemotherapy regimen received a fixed dose of 1250 mg vatalanib either once-daily dosing (QD) or two divided daily dosing (TDD: 500 mg a.m. + 750 mg p.m.) until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. Primary end point was the disease control rate (DCR)…
Propyldazine is mutagenic inSalmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli: Distinct specificity for strains TA1537 AND TA97
1985
The antihypertensive drug propyldazine (Atensil) was demonstrated to be muta- genic with auxotrophic mutants of Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli. Addition of liver S9 mix (postmitochondrial supernatant fraction supplemented with an NADPH-generating system) had little, if any, effect on the mutagenicity. The mutagenicity showed an unusual pattern of strain specificity. Increased fre- quencies of reversion were observed with all strains whose auxotrophy was caused by frame-shift mutations: the number of revertant colonies per plate from S. typhimurium TA98, TA1538, TA97, and TA1537 was increased up to 5-, 9-, 43-, and 160-fold, respectively, above background. Among the strains that…
The long-term effects of probiotics in the therapy of ulcerative colitis: a clinical study
2016
Aim: Intestinal dysbiosis seems to be the leading cause of inflammatory bowel diseases, and probiotics seems to represent the proper support against their occurrence. Actually, probiotic blends and anti-inflammatory drugs represent a weapon against inflammatory bowel diseases. The present study evaluates the long-term (2 years) effects of combination therapy (mesalazine plus a probiotic blend of Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidus strain BGN4) on ulcerative colitis activity. Method: Sixty patients with moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis were enrolled: 30 of them were treated with a single daily oral administration of mesalazine 1200 mg; 30 pati…
