Perception et traque de “l'accent etranger” : la production des voyelles orales en fle par des polonophones

2017

Our research fits in the overall framework of French as a Foreign Language oral teaching methods and focuses will deal with the phenomenon of “foreign accent”, those marks that reveal in transparency the presence of the phonological sieve of the mother tongue, and we will focus on the pronunciation of oral vowels in French by Polish-speaking learners. A preliminary study, descriptive and contrastive, of the phonological systems of Polish and French will allow us to make assumptions about perceptible interferences in the pronunciation of spoken French which might be at the origin of noise in the psycholinguistic decoding. Acoustic analyses of speech corpuses, based on the previous hypotheses…

Establishing a Standardised Procedure for Building Learner Corpora

2014

Decisions at the outset of preparing a learner corpus are of crucial importance for how the corpus can be built and how it can be analysed later on. This paper presents a generic workflow to build learner corpora while taking into account the needs of the users. The workflow results from an extensive collaboration between linguists that annotate and use the corpus and computer linguists that are responsible for providing technical support. The paper addresses the linguists’ research needs as well as the availability and usability of language technology tools necessary to meet them. We demonstrate and illustrate the relevance of the workflow using results and examples from our L1 learner cor…

The Role of Perceived Social Support as a Contributor to the Successful Transition from Primary to Lower Secondary School

2019

Following approximately 1,800 Finnish children, this longitudinal study examined the associations between students’ perceived social support (teacher-student relationships, family support, and peer support), behavioral engagement, cynicism towards school, and academic achievement during the transition from primary to lower secondary school. After controlling for parental educational level and cynicism before the school transition, the results showed that the more students experienced pre-transition peer support, the less they reported post-transition cynicism. Furthermore, pre-transition peer support contributed to students’ increased academic achievement and behavioral engagement after the…

All-Polish Andragogical Journals in the Interwar Period (1918–1939)

2020

In the article, the author attempts to show the role of andragogical journals in popularizing adult education in the Interwar period. Six Polish journals of nationwide circulation are characterized, as they reflected the socio-ideological profile of the state and the organizations which published them. In their columns, theoretical and methodological studies which facilitated work with adults were presented. Their major task was to support teachers and educators in their school and outside-school work with adult learners. The basis for preparing the present text was an analysis of the content of the periodicals. W tekście podjęto próbę ukazania roli czasopism andragogicznych w upowszechnian…

Design perspectives on technology, language teaching and language teacher education

2012

Despite the national strategies and major efforts to promote pedagogical use of ICTs in education, training programs for in-service teachers have often failed to develop sustainable pedagogical practice. For sustainable development, teachers need to be offered opportunities to explore the role of technology in relation to their concept of language and learning, and reforms should be designed in negotiation with teachers and students. In teacher education, aspiring teachers are being informed of the latest research results, but bringing the theory down to practice is a major task that calls for development work soundly based on research. In this paper we suggest that design-based research (D…

[tyʁlyty’ty/ləʃapopwɛ̃’ty] (Turlututu, le chapeau pointu) ou de la perception à la production de la voyelle /y/ par des apprenants polonophones

2019

Our basic assumption is that all voices are born from listening. We will focus on the pronouncing difficulties of the vowel /y/ by Polish learners of level A1/A2: a preliminary descriptive and comparative study, corroborated by an acoustic study, determined that the phoneme /y/ is often pronounced: 1) too posterior and/or too loose (thus tending towards the /u/); 2) too anterior (tending towards the /i/). However, the vowels /i/ and /u/ exist in Polish and are the closest corresponding sounds to the vowel /y/, absent in the Polish vocal system. This acoustic study is based on three phases of data recording/analysis: I) diagnostic phase—to detect the tendency of each speaker on the axis of a…

Learning Slovak in an E-Learning Environment: A case study

2014

Providing a motivating learning environment for learning a less commonly taught language is a challenge. Developing technology, societal changes, virtual mobility and networking create new demands for teachers and students of these languages. Growing needs for international mobility call for the adoption of new pedagogical approaches. It is the urgency of using more up-to-date, pedagogically acceptable computer-assisted teaching programs that led to the development of the e-learning course of Slovak reported upon in this article. The course is based on a socio-constructivist approach and its main aim is to promote the development of learners’ communicative and cultural competence. This empi…

University Exchange Students’ Practices of Learning Finnish: A Language Ecological Approach to Affordances in Linguistic Landscapes

2020

In linguistic landscape (LL) studies, various projects have demonstrated how language learners benefit from tasks that involve the documentation and interpretation of the LL. In this chapter, we investigate how Finnish as a second language learner exchange students turned the local LL into affordances during their time abroad in Finland. While language awareness and its relation to learning and teaching have been extensively discussed, it has often been regarded as a property of an individual consciousness: a faculty or a tendency of a particular person to perceive, notice and reflect upon the linguistic features present in their environments. In contrast, we argue for an approach that cont…
