Young Russian Immigrants' Segmental Duration and Length in Finnish
2015
This pilot study sheds light on how young Russian immigrants (n=10) produce Finnish segmental duration and length in read-aloud speech as compared to native Finnish speakers (n=5). Segment duration is distinctive in Finnish and an important feature of Finnish phonology, whereas in Russian it only plays a marginal role. The results show a general tendency of durational contrasts being difficult to learn with great interspeaker differences. peerReviewed
Nordic Higher Education in Flux: System Evolution and Reform Trajectories
2019
AbstractThis chapter provides a brief description of how the four national systems included in this study—Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden—are currently organised and structured. In doing so, it illuminates several specific features such as the types and sizes of the institutions, enrolment patterns, performance measures, and funding. In addition, the chapter gives a snapshot of how higher education systems have evolved historically by shedding light on policy dynamics from the late 1990s to 2013, the baseline period for the FINNUT comparative study, the research project that provides the basis for this edited volume. This is followed by a section describing the aim, methods, theoretica…
The obstacle race to institutional change : the slow path to policy change of a coalition advocating for sexuality education in Norway
2019
Master's thesis Innovative governance and public management ME523 - University of Agder 2019 Developing schoolsexualityeducation policies is a complex matterdue to the controversial and politicized nature of sexuality. This thesisaims at understanding the development of institutional change in the presence of complex policy systems that involvemultiple actors in the policy process. To achieve this aim, itanalyses the actionsof an advocacy coalition that works to change sexuality education policies in Norway. The study adopts the Advocacy CoalitionFramework (ACF)for understanding the interconnections among the macro-level of the political and historicalcontext, the micro-level of the actor’s …
Lifelong Learning in Seniors in the Perspective of the Neuro- and Psychosocial Concept
2019

Power Line Monitoring through Data Integrity Analysis with Q-Learning Based Data Analysis Network
2022
To monitor and handle big data obtained from electrical, electronic, electro-mechanical, and other equipment linked to the power grid effectively and efficiently, it is important to monitor them continually to gather information on power line integrity. We propose that data transmission analysis and data collection from tools like digital power meters may be used to undertake predictive maintenance on power lines without the need for specialized hardware like power line modems and synthetic data streams. Neural network models such as deep learning may be used for power line integrity analysis systems effectively, safely, and reliably. We adopt Q-learning based data analysis network for anal…
Skolotāja valoda angļu valodas stundās pozitīvu attiecību veidošanai klasē
2017
2021
This article is about the importance of collaboration in the development of teacher professionalism, and we have asked the research question: How can group collaboration between vocational education and training (VET) students contribute to the development of their teacher professionalism? The data basis is interviews with ten VET students in practical pedagogical education for vocational teachers that we conducted in the winter of 2020. In addition, we studied all internship documents that the ten students produced during the internship period. The students are in practical training at their own school with their own students and collaborate with each other to strengthen their own teacher …
Towards student-centred pedagogy : action research with Ethiopian village school teachers
2018
This study is an action research that was planned and implemented with 23 Ethiopian Village School teachers. The action of the four year project concentrated on developing new, student-centred teaching methods instead of traditional lecturing and rote learning in one remote school. The overall aim of the study was to follow this process and the teachers’ professional development, and to explore how the practical arrangements, such as material or cultural surroundings, constrain or enable usage of student-centred methods at the school. The theoretical framework of the study consists of theories about professional development, action research, and the theory of practice architectures. The dat…
Play as Part of Learning - Learning as Part of Play
2015
Flexible and individual learning and teaching have repeatedly been a topic of conversation in the last few years. Teachers and parents as well as pupils hope that a child would be seen as an individual in school, in such a pedagogical environment where a child's daily life and his inherent way to play and learn form a coherent whole. This research article is based on a pedagogical development project of learning environments. The research target is a school in a mid- sized town in western Finland. The school has a pre- school group and three joint 1st and 2nd grade classes. The focus of this research article is the school's way to take into account individual and flexible learning and teach…
