The Role of Desire in The Prediction of Intention
2011
This paper is based on the notion that desire represents an important motivational aspect of the decision-making process. Thus, we examined the hypotheses that desire (1) predicts behavioral intentions and (2) mediates the effects of theory of planned behavior (TPB) components and past behavior on an individual’s intention to quit smoking. The analysis is based on three separate conditions in which the intention to quit smoking during the next 1, 4, or 6 months, respectively, was measured; the three conditions contained identical variables. The results of the hierarchical regression analysis show that there are sufficient grounds for including desire as an additional predictor in the TPB m…
Profiling a spectrum of mental job demands and their linkages to employee outcomes
2020
Substance abuse, conduct disorder (CD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are all known risk factors for developing aggressive behaviors, criminality, other psychiatric comorbidity and substance use disorders (SUD). Since early age of onset is important for aggravating the impact of several of these risk factors, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether young adult violent offenders with different patterns of early onset externalizing problems (here: substance use < age 15, ADHD, CD) had resulted in different criminality profiles, substance use problem profiles and psychiatric comorbidity in young adult age. A mixed-method approach was used, combining a varia…
Continuous subcutaneous Insulin infusion leads to immediate, table, and long-term changes in metabolic control
2008
Background: Evaluations of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) usually focus on one pre- and one post-CSII measurement to assess metabolic therapy outcome. Aim: Extending this research, the aim of the present study was to provide a more fine-grained analysis of achieved glycaemic control. Methods: In 52 patients with type 1 diabetes (mean age of 37.85 years at CSII begin; s.d. ± 12.41), haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels were assessed every 3 months over a period of 5 years (1 year before and 4 years after the introduction of CSII). Mixed models were utilized to describe changes in glycaemic control. Results: The pre–post course showed that already in the first quarter, a statis…
“Things that matter most must never be at the mercy of things that matter least” : En kvantitativ studie av psykiske helseplager blant ungdom i Norge…
2018
Masteroppgave psykisk helsearbeid ME504 - Universitetet i Agder 2018 This master thesis has been developed in collaboration between Bente Melbøe Hokland and Majbritt Legind Hersel. Throughout our education we have often discussed a common wonder about youths; why someone is doing well in life while others do not. The master thesis gave us the opportunity to conduct a quantitative survey where we through Ungdata have investigated how many young people who indicate to struggle with depressive ailments and how this is distributed among the sexes. The figures are from 2015. After mapping the scope, the purpose is to investigate which factors may be associated with the experience of depression a…
An Exact Solution for the Level-Crossing Rate and the Average Duration of Fades of the Envelope of Sum-of-Cisoids Processes
2012
Authors version of an article published in the journal: Procedia Technology. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.protcy.2012.03.004 Sum-of-cisoids (SOC) processes provide a physically and numerically appealing framework for the modelling and simulation of a wide class of mobile radio channels. This paper is concerned with the problem of finding a general solution for the level-crossing rate (LCR) and the average duration of fades (ADF) of the envelope of SOC processes. Exact expressions are derived for the LCR and the ADF by taking into account that the inphase component, the quadrature component, and the time derivatives of the inphase and quadrature component…
Likeness to the Divinity? Virtues and Charismatic Leadership
2012
Classical virtue theory provides a fruitful framework for understanding charismatic leadership. The article outlines the theory of virtues and demonstrates the contribution of virtues to the personality traits and behaviours that are associated with charisma. The virtue of magnanimity of high-mindedness is shown to play a special role. The virtue-based perspective to charismatic leadership clarifies disagreements concerning the definition and delineation of the concept of charisma. It also provides a novel framework for analyzing and criticizing charismatic leadership trainingt programs. Finally, the article demonstrates that the dark side of charisma is a deformation caused by the absence …
How are learning experiences and task properties associated with adolescents’ emotions and psychophysiological states?
2022
We examined whether learning experiences (value of success, mastery experience) and task properties (challenge) are related to early adolescents’ (n = 190, median age = 12) emotional responses and psychophysiological states (autonomic nervous system, ANS) in achievement situations in an ambulatory laboratory. They completed four achievement tasks (two math and two reading) at different challenge levels in randomized order, and reported their learning and task perceptions for each task. The proportion of errors indicated the objective demandingness of each task. As indices of sympathetic nervous system activity, we recorded skin conductance response (SCR) and heart rate (HR), and, as parasym…
Curiosity and exploration: A conceptual overview and structural modeling
2001
Many attempts have been made to measure curiosity or intrinsic motivation. However, there is no consensus on what curiosity is. In the present study, five previously constructed curiosity inventories were translated to Finnish and modified to be convenient for fifth-graders. The main purpose of the study was to clarify the concept of curiosity. Using conceptual analysis and the results of previous studies, it was possible to construct nine alternative conceptual models of curiosity. The corresponding statistical models were expected to account for the covariances among 15 subscales measuring curiosity-related exploratory behavior. However, before proceeding to the subscale level, the struct…
Students' Physical Activity, Physical Education Enjoyment, and Motivational Determinants through a Three-Year School-Initiated Program
2023
Patterns of physical activity in adulthood are often established during adolescence, making this an important period for promoting physical activity. To address this, the Sotkamo Physical Activity as Civil Skill Program 2010–2014 was implemented to increase Grade 5 to 9 students’ physical activity on a daily basis. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of program on students’ physical activity and enjoyment. Furthermore, the relationship between motivational climate and enjoyment, and the percentages of students who engaged in 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity on the daily basis were examined.
