Objective To evaluate whether the survival of patients with Parkinson disease (PD) is shorter than that of the general population. Design Survival was investigated in a cohort of patients with PD previously identified during a population-based prevalence study (prevalence day, November 1, 1987; reference follow-up date, October 31, 1995). The survival of patients with PD was compared with that of a control sample randomly selected from the same population (2 controls for each case, matched for age, sex, and study municipality). Motor intracortical inhibition in PD: L-DOPA modulation of high-frequency rTMS effects

Dopaminergic drugs and deep brain stimulation restore cortical inhibition in Parkinson disease (PD) patients. High-frequency rTMS was also found to increase cortical inhibition in PD but its therapeutic effect is still controversial. Tarantula Hemocyanin Shows Phenoloxidase Activity

An enzyme generally catalyzes one well defined reaction with high specificity and efficiency. We report here in contrast that the copper protein hemocyanin of the tarantula Eurypelma californicum exhibits two different functions. These occur at the same active site. While hemocyanin usually is an oxygen carrier, its function can be transformed totally to monophenoloxidase and o-diphenoloxidase activity after limited proteolysis with trypsin or chymotrypsin. N-acetyldopamine (NADA) is more effectively oxidized than L-dopa or dopamine. Background Characteristic symptoms of Dopamine-responsive dystonia (DRD) are increased muscle tone and Parkinsonian features. Children with DRD are often misdiagnosed. The disorder responds well to treatment with Levodopa. Aim To reflect on a case of DRD. Method Case report of a 13 years old girl misdiagnosed with tetany. Results The girl was hospitalized for opisthotonus, positive Trousseau and Chvostek signs, diagnosed as tetany. Biocatalytic formation of synthetic melanin: The role of vanadium haloperoxidases, L-DOPA and iodide

The vanadium haloperoxidase (V-HPO) enzyme, extracted from the brown alga Laminaria saccharina, is able to catalyze the formation of a black precipitate, using as precursor the amino acid L-dopa in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and iodide, in one-pot synthesis. The L-dopa oxidation is a multistep reaction with a crucial role played by the iodide in the enzyme catalyzed peroxidative production of dopachrome, a well known intermediate in the synthesis of melanin. Dopachrome is then converted to a synthetic form of melanin through a polymerization reaction. Assessing the frequency of Wearing-Off (WO) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, and its impact on Quality of Life (QoL). METHODS: Consecutive ambulatory patients, who were on dopaminergic treatment for ≥ 1 year, were included in this multicentre, observational cross-sectional study. In a single visit, WO was diagnosed based on neurologist assessment as well as using the validated Italian version of a patient self-rated 19-question Wearing-Off Questionnaire (WOQ-19); WO was defined for scores ≥ 2. Both encoding and memory retrieval components for time perception are impaired in Parkinson's disease (PD). Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on acute heart failure admissions and mortality: a multicentre study (COV-HF-SIRIO 6 study)

Abstract Aims The coronavirus disease‐2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic has changed the landscape of medical care delivery worldwide. We aimed to assess the influence of COVID‐19 pandemic on hospital admissions and in‐hospital mortality rate in patients with acute heart failure (AHF) in a retrospective, multicentre study. Methods and results From 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2020, a total of 101 433 patients were hospitalized in 24 Cardiology Departments in Poland. The number of patients admitted due to AHF decreased by 23.4% from 9853 in 2019 to 7546 in 2020 (P < 0.001).
