Lexical cross-linguistic influence in the written English production of Finnish 6th grade pupils

2014

Kielten väliset vaikutteet (transfer) ovat monitahoinen ilmiö, jota on tutkittu kielen oppimisen viitekehyksessä aktiivisesti 1900-luvun puolivälistä lähtien. Transfer-tutkimuksessa on kuitenkin perinteisesti keskitytty tutkimaan lähinnä äidinkielen vaikutuksia opittavaan vieraaseen kieleen.

On the typology of motion events in Aymara

2021

This paper investigates the lexicalization pattern of motion events in Aymara, an Andean language spoken in Bolivia, Peru, and Chile. After providing a description of the morphosyntax of translational motion events, this study aims at a preliminary typological classification of Aymara within the framework of Talmy’s typology (Talmy 2000). With this purpose, three diagnostic tests have been used to determine the basic framing-typology of motion events. These tests consider i) the size of manner-of-motion lexicon and, more broadly, the degree of manner salience, ii) the complex-path constructions and the use of ‘plus-ground’ clauses, iii) the expression of boundary-crossing. The results of th…

Rimbaud e Apollinaire nas recreacións poéticas bielorrusas: particularidades do tratamento fraseoestilístico / Rimbaud and Apollinaire in Belarusian …

2021

Kształcenie świadomości językowej w gimnazjum - rozwijanie kompetencji leksykalnej i leksykologicznej

2016

The article presents the results of studies aimed at evaluating the level of lexicological and lexical competence of middle school students, and the results of a study of school determinants of this competence assessed through surveys, interviews and in‑class observation. The level of lexicological competence was evaluated as good, whereas the textual examination revealed lexical competence to be lower and more varied. The most important shortcomings were: insufficiently retained comprehension of lexical categories introduced during Polish language classes, inability to draw the line between what is part of jargon and a general language register, better acquisition of receptively passive th…

Spoken-Word Segmentation and Dyslexia

2002

We used magnetoencephalography to elucidate the cortical activation associated with the segmentation of spoken words in nonreading-impaired and dyslexic adults. The subjects listened to binaurally presented sentences where the sentence-ending words were either semantically appropriate or inappropriate to the preceding sentence context. Half of the inappropriate final words shared two or three initial phonemes with the highly expected semantically appropriate words. Two temporally and functionally distinct response patterns were detected in the superior temporal lobe. The first response peaked at approximately 100 msec in the supratemporal plane and showed no sensitivity to the semantic appr…

Inhibitory priming in auditory word recognition: Is it really the product of response biases ?

2007

On the flexibility of letter position coding during lexical processing: the case of Thai.

2012

In Indo-European languages, letter position coding is particularly noisy in middle positions (e.g., judge and jugde look very similar), but not in the initial letter position (e.g., judge vs. ujdge). Here we focus on a language (Thai) which, potentially, may be more flexible with respect to letter position coding than Indo-European languages: (i) Thai is an alphabetic language which is written without spaces between words (i.e., there is a degree of ambiguity in relation to which word a given letter belongs to) and (ii) some of the vowels are misaligned (e.g., [Formula: see text]/ε:bn/ is pronounced as /bε:n/), whereas others are not (e.g., [Formula: see text]/a:p/ is pronounced as /a:p/).…

Does "whole-word shape" play a role in visual word recognition?

2002

To analyze the impact of outline shape on visual word recognition, the visual pattern of the stimuli can be distorted by size alternation. Contrary to the predictions of models that rely on outline shape (Allen, Wallace, & Weber, 1995), the effect of size alternationwas greater for low-frequency words than for high-frequency words in a lexical decision task (Experiment 1). In Experiment 2, the effect of case type (lowercase vs. UPPERCASE) occurred for low-frequency words, but not for high-frequency words. The effect of neighborhood size was remarkably similar in the two experiments. The results can be readily explained in the framework of a resonance model (Grossberg & Stone, 1986), in whic…

The high five: Associations of the five positive factors with the big five and well-being

2017

The study of individual differences in positive characteristics has mainly focused on moral traits. The objectives of this research were to study individual differences in positive characteristics from the point of view of the layperson, including non-moral individual characteristics, and to generate a replicable model of positive factors. Three studies based on a lexical approach were conducted. The first study generated a corpus of words which resulted in a refined list of socially shared positive characteristics. The second study produced a five-factor model of positive characteristics: erudition, peace, cheerfulness, honesty, and tenacity. The third study confirmed the model with a diff…
