Chronic non-invasive glucocorticoid administration decreases polysialylated neural cell adhesion molecule expression in the adult rat dentate gyrus
2004
The expression of the polysialylated neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM) is increased in the hippocampus after chronic restraint stress (CRS) and may play a permissive role in structural changes that include dendrite reorganization in dentate gyrus (DG) and CA3 pyramidal neurons and suppression of neurogenesis in DG. We report that chronic oral corticosterone (CORT) administration decreases the number of PSA-NCAM immunoreactive granule neurons in the adult rat dentate gyrus, and the available evidence suggests that this is an indirect effect of CORT, possibly involving excitatory amino acids, that may not be directly related to neurogenesis. Because CORT treatment reduces but does not …
Magnetic resonance imaging of the migration of neuronal precursors generated in the adult rodent brain
2006
Neural progenitor cells (NPCs) reside within the subventricular zone (SVZ) in rodents. These NPCs give rise to neural precursors in adults that migrate to the olfactory bulb (OB) along a well-defined pathway, the rostral migratory stream (RMS). Here we demonstrate that these NPCs can be labeled, in vivo, in adult rats with fluorescent, micron-sized iron oxide particles (MPIOs), and that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can detect migrating neural precursors carrying MPIOs along the RMS to the OB. Immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy indicated that particles were inside GFAP(+) neural progenitor cells in the SVZ, migrating PSA-NCAM(+) and Doublecortin(+) neural precursors within the …

Drug gastrointestinal absorption in rat: Strain and gender differences.
2015
Predictive animal models of intestinal drug absorption are essential tools in drug development to identify compounds with promising biopharmaceutical properties. In situ perfusion absorption studies are routinely used in the preclinical setting to screen drug candidates. The objective of this work is to explore the differences in magnitude and variability on intestinal absorption associated with rat strain and gender. Metoprolol and Verapamil absorption rate coefficients were determined using the in situ closed loop perfusion model in four strains of rats and in both genders. Strains used were Sprague-Dawley, Wistar-Han, Wistar-Unilever, Long-Evans and CD∗IGS. In the case of Metoprolol only…
Distribution of clozapine and desmethylclozapine between blood and brain in rats.
1999
Desmethylclozapine is the major metabolite of clozapine in serum. Although the metabolite is pharmacologically active in vitro, the occurrence of desmethylclozapine in brain under steady-state conditions and its role for clinical actions of clozapine are unclear. In this study 20 male Sprague-Dawley rats received five oral doses of clozapine 20 mg/kg at 1.5-h intervals. At 0.5, 1, 2 and 5 h after the last administration, at a time four animals were killed for analysis of clozapine and desmethylclozapine concentrations in serum and brain. The treatment yielded steady-state serum concentrations of clozapine that are considered as therapeutically effective in man. Desmethylclozapine concentrat…
The ´champagne-cup` period at Carchemish. A review of the Early Bronze Age levels on the Acropolis Mound and the problem of the Inner Town.
2007
The pioneer excavations conducted by the British Museum expedition at the famous site of Carchemish in the 1910’s brought to light a large number of buildings, sculptures and inscriptions which provide an outline of the urban layout of the Iron Age city and its monuments. While many scholars have often attempted to re-examine the epigraphic material as well as the style and chronology of the major works of this period in order to set them in a proper historical context, much less attention has been paid to the earlier levels mainly uncovered on the Acropolis mound, ranging from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. This paper discusses the archaeological evidence available and attempted to recon…
The response of calcareous nannoplankton to sea surface variability at Ceara Rise during the early Pleistocene glacial-interglacial cycles
2019
The Ceara Rise lies just beyond the edge of the Amazon River Fan and sediments from this site may record the complex interplay of different climatic systems and processes, including past changes in southern America monsoon activity, Intertropical Convergence Zone setting, different Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) strength and phytoplankton blooming triggered by Amazon River plumes. Here we investigate early Pleistocene calcareous nannoplankton at Ceara Rise, between about 1150 and 850 kiloyears ago. Our investigation shows abrupt variations in water column dynamics across glacial/interglacial cycles or, even better, linked with different AMOC modes. Dominant placoliths in…
Accelerating early language development with multi-sensory training
2012
This paper reports the outcome of a multi-sensory intervention on infant language skills. A programme titled ‘Rhyming Game and Exercise Club’, which included kinaesthetic–tactile mother–child rhyming games performed in natural joint attention situations, was intended to accelerate Finnish six- to eight-month-old infants’ language development. The participants were 20 infants (10 training group children and 10 control children). Their cognitive skills and both receptive and expressive language skills (Bayley Scales III) were tested three times (pre-, post- and follow-up assessments). The groups differed significantly in receptive language skills at the baseline, in favour of the controls. Th…
Parental contribution to child’s early language and interest in books
1998
The relationships between parents’ age, education, literacy activities and shared reading with the child and children’s language skills and early interest in books were examined in a longitudinal study of 108 children. Parents reported on their children’s lexical and grammatical development by using the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories (the CDIs) at the ages of 14 and 24 months. The Bayley Scales of Infant Development were administered to the children in a laboratory setting at 24 months. Information on parental background variables was obtained through a questionnaire before the children’s birth. Book reading habits were inquired when the children were 2 years of age. Mother…
Following the dramatic earthquake that devastated 14 municipalities in the Bel…
