Influence of obesity on atherogenic dyslipidemia in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

2013

Background Obesity is known to underlie, at least partially, dyslipidemia in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), but it is unclear whether PCOS status per se increases the risk of alterations of lipoprotein subfractions, which differ in size and atherogenic potential. Our objective was to evaluate whether PCOS influences lipoprotein profile and LDL and HDL subfractions and to study the impact of obesity on these parameters. Materials and methods This was a case–control study conducted in an academic medical centre. The study population consisted of 54 women of fertile age with PCOS and 60 controls adjusted for age and BMI. Biochemical lipid profile and LDL and HDL lipoprotein subfractions (me…

Evaluation of cardiovascular risk and oxidative stress parameters in hypercholesterolemic subjects on a standard healthy diet including low-fat milk …

2010

A healthy diet and plant sterols (PS) are recommended for reducing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and, subsequently, the risk of premature cardiovascular disease PS mediate a decrease in fat-soluble vitamin concentration, which can lead to a general impairment of antioxidative defenses and an increase in oxidative stress. Thus, we evaluated the effects of a healthy diet, including PS-enriched low-fat milk, on cardiovascular risk and oxidative stress parameters in hypercholesterolemic subjects. This was a randomized parallel trial employing 40 subjects and consisting of two 3-month intervention phases. After 3 months on a standard healthy diet, subjects were divided into two inter…

Involvement of leucocyte/endothelial cell interactions in anorexia nervosa.

2015

Background Anorexia nervosa is a common psychiatric disorder in adolescence and is related to cardiovascular complications. Our aim was to study the effect of anorexia nervosa on metabolic parameters, leucocyte–endothelium interactions, adhesion molecules and proinflammatory cytokines. Materials and Methods This multicentre, cross-sectional, case–control study employed a population of 24 anorexic female patients and 36 controls. We evaluated anthropometric and metabolic parameters, interactions between leucocytes polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), proinflammatory cytokines such as tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL…

Atherogenic lipoprotein phenotype and low-density lipoproteins size and subclasses in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

2006

Abstract Context: An altered lipid profile is common in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and is usually characterized by increased triglycerides and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol levels. In the general population, these alterations are often associated with the increase of small low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) in the so-called “atherogenic lipoprotein phenotype” (ALP) that determines a further increase of cardiovascular risk. In this study, we evaluated the presence of ALP in the plasma of women with PCOS. Setting: Measurements and analysis of LDL size were performed at the Clinic of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Clinical Nutrition, University Hospital, Zurich. PCOS patients…

Cocoa polyphenols and their potential benefits for human health.

2012

This paper compiles the beneficial effects of cocoa polyphenols on human health, especially with regard to cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases, metabolic disorders, and cancer prevention. Their antioxidant properties may be responsible for many of their pharmacological effects, including the inhibition of lipid peroxidation and the protection of LDL-cholesterol against oxidation, and increase resistance to oxidative stress. The phenolics from cocoa also modify the glycemic response and the lipid profile, decreasing platelet function and inflammation along with diastolic and systolic arterial pressures, which, taken together, may reduce the risk of cardiovascular mortality. Cocoa polyph…

One-Pot Analysis: a New Integrated Methodology for Determination of TAG and FA Determination through LC/MS and in-silico Saponification

2017

Vegetable oils differ significantly for their lipid profile and are mainly constituted by triacylglycerols (TAGs). These are esters formed bonding glycerol to three fatty acids (FAs). To the best of our knowledge, FA and TAG profiles in oils and fats are obtained using at least two different experimental techniques. In particular, FA determination requires elaborated procedures for sample preparation and analyte derivatization. In this work, we propose a one-pot analysis able to determine both TAG and FA contents of edible oils, using experimental data obtained from a simple liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry determination of TAGs. This experimental procedure is followed by an in silic…

Efficacy and safety of bempedoic acid for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

2020

Background Bempedoic acid is a first-in-class lipid-lowering drug recommended by guidelines for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Our objective was to estimate its average effect on plasma lipids in humans and its safety profile. Methods and findings We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis of phase II and III randomized controlled trials on bempedoic acid (PROSPERO: CRD42019129687). PubMed (Medline), Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science databases were searched, with no language restriction, from inception to 5 August 2019. We included 10 RCTs (n = 3,788) comprising 26 arms (active arm [n = 2,460]; control arm [n = 1,328]). Effect sizes for changes in lipids and high-…

One-hour post-load plasma glucose level is associated with a worse metabolic profile in children with GH deficiency

2017

Purpose: In children, the plasma glucose value at 1 h (1hPG) during OGTT higher than 132.5 mg/dl is a predictor of alterations in glucose metabolism. We aimed to metabolically characterize GHD children according to 1hPG levels. Methods: Fifty-one GHD children (35 M, 16 F; mean age 8.6 years), grouped according to 1hPG, were evaluated at diagnosis and after 12 months of GH treatment (GHT) and compared with 50 matched controls at baseline. Auxological parameters, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), glucose and insulin during OGTT, lipid profile, the oral disposition index (DIo), the homeostasis model assessment estimate of insulin resistance (Homa-IR), and the insulin sensitivity index (ISI…

Effects of red wine polyphenols and alcohol on glucose metabolism and the lipid profile: a randomized clinical trial.

2013

Summary Background & aims Epidemiological data suggest that moderate red wine consumption reduces cardiovascular mortality and the incidence of diabetes. However, whether these effects are due to ethanol or to non-alcoholic components of red wine still remains unknown. The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of moderate consumption of red wine, dealcoholized red wine, and gin on glucose metabolism and the lipid profile. Methods Sixty-seven men at high cardiovascular risk were randomized in a crossover trial. After a run-in period, all received each of red wine (30 g alcohol/d), the equivalent amount of dealcoholized red wine, and gin (30 g alcohol/d) for 4 week periods, in a…
