Micellar and lyotropic behavior of three isomeric bola-amphiphiles with pyridinium groups
2010
The micellar and lyotropic phase behavior of three isomeric bola-amphiphiles 1, 2 and 3 based on para-, meta- and ortho-phenylene derivatives with hydrophilic pyridinium headgroups was investigated. The micellar behavior was characterized by surface-tension and conductivity measurements: while the para-substituted amphiphile 1 and the ortho isomer 3 aggregated to micelles, the meta-substituted amphiphile 2 exhibited stepwise, but discontinous self-association. This is explained by the mass-action and phase-separation model. The existence of “premicellar” aggregates and the discontinous aggregation of 2 is evidenced in addition by a difference-spectro-photometric measurement. The low surface…

Task Specific Dicationic Ionic Liquids: Recyclable Reaction Media for the Mononuclear Rearrangement of Heterocycles
2014
Nine functionalized dicationic ionic liquids were used to study the base catalyzed mononuclear rearrangement of (Z)-phenylhydrazone of 3-benzoyl-5-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole into the corresponding triazole at 363 K. Ionic liquids were characterized by the presence of 1-(1-imidazolylmethyl)-3,5-di[1-(3'-octylimidazolylmethyl)]benzene cation, bearing on the structure a neutral imidazole unit as basic functionality. Besides anions generally used for monocationic ionic liquids, such as [Br(-)], [BF4(-)], and [NTf2(-)], also dianions having a rigid aromatic spacer such as 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate, 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate, and 1,5- and 2,6-naphthalenedisulfonate were taken into account. Further…
Identification of drying oils used in pictorial works of art by liquid chromatography of the 2-nitrophenylhydrazides derivatives of fatty acids.
2004
A new HPLC-UV-Vis method for identification of drying oils from binding media or protective film used in pictorial works of art prior to conservation or restoration is proposed. Chromophore derivatization of fatty acids released by hydrolysis of structural drying oils is studied. The derivatization reagent selected was 2-nitrophenylhydrazine with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl animopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride/pyridine as catalyst. This reaction was carried out using microwave heating. Mobile phase was methanol/water/n-propanol/acetic acid (80:14:5:1) running in isocratic mode. Absorbance was measured at 400nm. In these conditions, hydrazides of myristic, palmitic, oleic, and stearic acids were…

Ionic Liquids on Demand in Continuous Flow
2009
We report on the development of an alternative protocol for the facile, solvent-free synthesis of various novel imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) that affords highly pure products without the necessity of subsequent purification steps. The continuous approach is based on the combination of HPLC pumps with a micromixer and a capillary residence tube. Our system provides a high degree of control over the alkylation reactions due to a high surface-to-volume ratio and superior heat and mass transport. Within the scope of our studies, we focused on ionic liquids containing differently substituted phenyl rings and characterized these compounds with respect to further use for direct applicatio…

The synthesis and the results of the structural study of two copolysiloxanes with laterally fixed trinitrofluorenone (TNF) units is reported. The two copolysiloxanes having 2,4 (1a) and 5,3 (1b) dimethylsiloxane comonomer units per TNF side group differ significantly in their phase behaviour as evident from optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray scattering: 1b shows a nematic mesophase whereas 1a is an amorphous material. The different phase behaviour is discussed in terms of microphase separation between the siloxane backbone and TNF side groups.
Room-temperature ionic liquid-based electrochemical nanobiosensors
2012
Abstract Room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have proved to be excellent materials for applications in electrochemistry. We review progress in constructing high-performance electrochemical biosensors. We also discuss: • different modified electrodes based on RTILs for biosensing applications; • different routes for enzyme biosensing based on RTIL-modified electrodes; • incorporation of biorecognition elements into RTIL-based electrodes; • electroanalytical applications of RTIL-based modified electrodes; and, • recent developments in which the advantages of ILs as a medium for biosensing were realized. We also summarize the latest developments in the applications of RTIL-based electrochem…
