Genome architecture enables local adaptation of Atlantic cod despite high connectivity

Adaptation to local conditions is a fundamental process in evolution; however, mechanisms maintaining local adaptation despite high gene flow are still poorly understood. Marine ecosystems provide a wide array of diverse habitats that frequently promote ecological adaptation even in species characterized by strong levels of gene flow. As one example, populations of the marine fish Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) are highly connected due to immense dispersal capabilities but nevertheless show local adaptation in several key traits. FO^2 with one transitive relation is decidable

2013

We show that the satisfiability problem for the two-variable first-order logic, FO^2, over transitive structures when only one relation is required to be transitive, is decidable. The result is optimal, as FO^2 over structures with two transitive relations, or with one transitive and one equivalence relation, are known to be undecidable, so in fact, our result completes the classification of FO^2-logics over transitive structures with respect to decidability. We show that the satisfiability problem is in 2-NExpTime. Decidability of the finite satisfiability problem remains open.

Derivation of a Homogenized Two-Temperature Model from the Heat Equation

This work studies the heat equation in a two-phase material with spherical inclusions. Under some appropriate scaling on the size, volume fraction and heat capacity of the inclusions, we derive a coupled system of partial differential equations governing the evolution of the temperature of each phase at a macroscopic level of description. Molecular association of cryptand 221D in NaCl-water solutions. A small-angle neutron scattering study

Molecules of 5-Decyl-4,7,13,16,21-pentaoxa-1,10-diaza-bicyclo-[8.8.5.]tricosan (221D) and its sodium complex, with both a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic portion, are expected to form aggregates in water solutions. This was confirmed by surface tension measurements. The aggregation behaviour was studied by small-angle neutron scattering at two different [NaCl]/[221D] molar ratios, such as to obtain, in one case, aggregates entirely made up of ionic monomers, and in the other, mixed micelles constituted by both ionic and non-ionic units. Migration kinetics of ion-implanted beryllium in glassy carbon

Abstract Migration kinetics of low-concentration implanted 7 Be in glassy carbon has been studied by the modified radiotracer technique at temperatures 1285 °C and 1340 °C. The annealed sample concentration profiles show two distinctive components: (i) Main profile broadening assigned to beryllium trapping in defects during annealing. (ii) Tail parts on both sides of the profile maximum related to faster migration. Of the latter the profile representing bulk diffusion lies on the region free of defect influence and is well described by concentration-independent diffusivity. Batch-to-Melt Conversion Kinetics in Sodium Aluminosilicate Batches Using Different Alumina Raw Materials

The batch-to-melt conversion in batches of sand, soda ash and corundum (C), alumina spinel (A), boehmite (B), or gibbsite (G) as Al2O3 carrier are studied using thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Laboratory-scaled batches are either heated continuously or quenched from 1600°C in a series of increasing dwell times. The results show that the conversion from the raw materials to the fresh melt proceeds in two kinetic stages. During the first stage (3–5 min), fast conversion of nearly 95% by mass occurs and the conversion coefficient increases in the order G < C ≈ A < B. Tailoring the anomalous Hall effect of SrRuO$_3$ thin films by strain: a first principles study

Motivated by the recently observed unconventional Hall effect in ultra-thin films of ferromagnetic SrRuO$_3$ (SRO) we investigate the effect of strain-induced oxygen octahedral distortion in the electronic structure and anomalous Hall response of the SRO ultra-thin films by virtue of density functional theory calculations. Our findings reveal that the ferromagnetic SRO films grown on SrTiO$_3$ (in-plane strain of $-$0.47$\%$) have an orthorhombic (both tilting and rotation) distorted structure and with an increasing amount of substrate-induced compressive strain the octahedral tilting angle is found to be suppressed gradually, with SRO films grown on NdGaO$_3$ (in-plane strain of $-$1.7$\%$…

A study of the optical effect of plasma sheath in a negative ion source using IBSIMU code

A plasma sheath inside an ion source has a strong focusing effect on the formation of an ion beam from the plasma. Properties of the beam depend on the shape and location of the plasma sheath inside the source. The most accessible experimental data dependent on the plasma sheath are the beam phase space distribution. Variation of beam emittance is a reflection of the properties of the plasma sheath, with minimum emittance for the optimal shape of the plasma sheath. The location and shape of the plasma sheath are governed by complex physics and can be understood by simulations using plasma models in particle tracking codes like IBSimu.
