Transnational Social Network Analysis
2012
AbstractThe following article discusses methods of social network analysis (SNA) as an approach in researching transnational social formations. SNA allows transnationality to be studied through relationships between actors, enabling the investigation of social structures which expand nation-state frameworks. Two empirical examples are used to address the central characteristics of the network analysis approach (focus on relations, systematic collection of data, means of visualising network data) and their relevance for research on cross-border social phenomena. The article also investigates the significance of geographical mobility in the research process, culminating in reflection on how “…
Invasion of thehobo transposable element studied byin situ hybridization on polytene chromosomes ofDrosophila melanogaster
1994
The invasion kinetics of hobo transposable element in the Drosophila melanogaster genome was studied by in situ hybridization on the polytene chromosomes. Six independent lines of Drosophila melanogaster flies that had been previously transformed by microinjection of the pHFL1 plasmid containing a complete hobo element were followed over 50 generations. We observed that hobo elements were scattered on each of the chromosome arms, with more insertion sites on the 3R arm. The total number of insertion sites remains quite small, between four and six, at generation 52. On the 2R arm, a short inversion appeared once at generation 52. Most of the integration sites reported here were already descr…
Chromatin structure of transposon Tn903 cloned into a yeast plasmid
1989
Transposon Tn903 contains the APH gene for kanamycin resistance, which is active in yeast [A. Jiménez and J. Davies (1980) Nature (London) 287, 869-871] and is flanked by two inverted repeats (IR) 1057 bp long. When plasmid pAJ50, carrying Tn903 and the 2-microns circle origin of replication, is cloned into Saccharomyces cerevisiae, nucleosomes are assembled in vivo on the prokaryotic DNA of the transposon. Indirect end labeling revealed that three nucleosomes are preferentially positioned on symmetrical sequences from both IRs. DNase I digestion also confirmed that the chromatin structure is symmetrical in both IRs. This suggests that sequence determinants are decisive for chromatin struct…
The sex determining region of Chironomus thummi is associated with highly repetitive DNA and transposable elements.
1993
The dominant male sex determiner in chromosome III of the midge Chironomus thummi thummi is closely linked to a large cluster of tandem-repetitive DNA elements, the Cla elements, which are otherwise highly repetitive and distributed over more than 200 sites on all chromosomes. Chromosome III displays a hemizygous cluster of Cla elements in males but not in females. The chromosomal location of this hemizygous Cla element cluster is in the region of the male determiner M as localized by cytogenetic analysis. With Cla elements as hybridization probe, it was possible to clone a large part of the sex determining region. Molecular analysis of the DNA of males and females in this region displayed …
P sequences ofDrosophilla Subobscuralack exon 3 and may encode a 66 kd repressor-like protein
1991
Abstract Several P homologous sequences have been cloned and sequenced from Drosophila subobscura. These sequences are located at the 85DE region of the O chromosome and at least three of them are organized in tandem. We have identified four copies which exhibit strong similarity between them. All of the isolated elements are truncated at the 5' and 3' ends. They have lost the inverted terminal repeats and exon 3, but maintain exons 0, 1 and 2. They are transcribed producing a polyadenylated RNA. The structure of these transcripts suggests that they are able to encode a 66 kd repressor-like protein, but not a functional transposase. We ask about the biological role of a potential repressor …
The Mu1 transposable element of maize contains two promoter signals recognized by the Escherichia coli RNA polymerase.
1990
The galactokinase (GalK) expression plasmid vector system pKO-1 has been used to screen for promoter elements in the maize transposable element Mu1 that function in Escherichia coli. Two transcriptional start points, named S1 and S2, were identified, which are located in the two direct repeats of the transposable element. This paper demonstrates that sequence elements exist in a plant transposable element which function as prokaryotic promotors.
Genetics of maximal walking speed and skeletal muscle characteristics in older women.
2008
AbstractThe aim of this study was to examine whether maximal walking speed, maximal isometric muscle strength, leg extensor power and lower leg muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) shared a genetic effect in common. In addition, we wanted to identify the chromosomal areas linked to maximal walking speed and these muscle characteristics and also investigate whether maximal walking speed and these three skeletal muscle characteristics are regulated by the same chromosomal areas. We studied 217 monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) female twin pairs aged 66 to 75 years in the Finnish Twin Study on Aging study. The DZ pairs (94) were genotyped for 397 microsatellite markers in 22 autosomes and X-chr…
Approximation problems in linear and non-linear analysis
2023
Existence theorems for inclusions of the type
1999
For a family of operator inclusions with convex closed-valued right-hand sides in Banach spaces, the existence of solutions is obtained by chiefly using Ky Fan's fixed point principle. The main result of the paper improves Theorem 1 in [16] as well as Theorem 2.2 of [3]. Some meaningful concrete cases are also presented and discussed.
SAVU: A Statistical Approach for Uncertain Data in Dynamics of Axially Moving Materials
2012
In physics and engineering problems, model input is never exact. The effect of small uncertainties on the solution is thus an important question. In this study, a direct statistical-visual approach to approximate the solution set is investigated in the context of axially moving materials. The multidimensional probability distribution for the input uncertainties is assumed known. It is considered as a deterministic object, which is then mapped through the model. The resulting probability density of the model output is visualized. The proposed system consists of three non-trivial parts, which are briefly discussed: a multidimensional sampler, a density estimator, and a high dynamic range (HDR…
