Metabolomics of Human Amniotic Fluid and Maternal Plasma during Normal Pregnancy

2016

Metabolic profiles of amniotic fluid and maternal blood are sources of valuable information about fetus development and can be potentially useful in diagnosis of pregnancy disorders. In this study, we applied 1H NMR-based metabolic profiling to track metabolic changes occurring in amniotic fluid (AF) and plasma (PL) of healthy mothers over the course of pregnancy. AF and PL samples were collected in the 2nd (T2) and 3rd (T3) trimester, prolonged pregnancy (PP) until time of delivery (TD). A multivariate data analysis of both biofluids reviled a metabolic switch-like transition between 2nd and 3rd trimester, which was followed by metabolic stabilization throughout the rest of pregnancy proba…

How does eating in the absence of hunger in children relate to child's BMI, inhibitory control and to maternal controlling feeding practices?

2021

International audience; Young children have an innate ability to self-regulate their food-intake by following their inner sensations of hunger and satiation. Children's temperamental traits and environmental factors, such as controlling feeding practices, can alter their self-regulation abilities and can induce weight gain in the long-term. The current study aimed to study how young children's eating in the absence of hunger (EAH) is related to their level of inhibitory control, body mass index (BMI) and maternal controlling feeding practices (food as reward, restriction for health, restriction for weight control). Mothers of 621 French children aged 2.00-6.97 years (51% boys, M = 4.11 year…

Performance of QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus for detection of latent tuberculosis infection in pregnant women living in a tuberculosis- and HIV-endemic se…

2017

We evaluated the performance of QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus (QFT-Plus), which includes two Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigen formulations (TB1 and TB2), for detection of latent tuberculosis infection during pregnancy. Eight-hundred-twenty-nine Ethiopian pregnant women (5.9% HIV-positive) were tested with QFT-Plus, with bacteriological sputum analysis performed for women with clinically suspected tuberculosis and HIV-positive women irrespective of clinical presentation. QFT-Plus read-out was categorized according to the conventional cut-off (0.35 IU/ml) for both antigen formulations. In addition, we analysed the distribution of QFT-Plus results within a borderline zone (0.20–0.70 IU/ml), and i…

Do pollen donors with fastest-growing pollen tubes sire the best offspring in an anemophilous tree,Betula pendula(Betulaceae)?

2001

The relationship between pollen and progeny performance has been a subject of many studies but the evidence for pollen-tube growth rate as an indicator of progeny fitness is equivocal. We used an anemophilous tree, Betula pendula, to examine the relationship between pollen-tube growth rate and seed and seedling performance. We crossed nine maternal plants with pollen from six pollen donors in a clonal B. pendula seed orchard, measured the pollen-tube growth rates for every cross, and analyzed the performance of the resulting seeds and seedlings. The only significant positive correlation was found between pollen-tube growth rate and seed mass when we controlled for seed number per infloresce…

Traditional and professional birth attendants influence on womens decisions of birth place and type of birth assistance : a qualitative study in Tang…

2012

Author's version of an article in the journal: Nordisk Sygeplejeforskning. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/nsf/2012/01/art02 Almost half of all Tanzanian women deliver at home, alone, assisted by family members or traditional birth attendants. The aim of this article was to expand existing knowledge on how pregnant and laboring women's preferences and decisions of birth place and type of assistance are influenced. A qualitative study with semi-structured interviews, with two traditional birth attendants and one midwife, and a participatory observation was conducted at a health clinic in Tanga District, Tanzania. It was found that the interaction between pregnant…

The effects of alpha-cypermethrin exposure on biochemical and redox parameters in pregnant rats and their newborns

2016

IF 2.388; International audience; Pyrethroid insecticides are extensively used in agriculture and in household activities. During pregnancy, they might affect maternal metabolic status and there after fetal development. In this work, we studied metabolic and redox effects of low dose alpha-cypermethrin exposure in pregnant rats and their offspring. The diet containing alpha cypermethrin at 0.02 mg/kg/day was consumed during the entire gestation. Plasma biochemical parameters as well as liver lipid and oxidative stress markers were determined. Our results showed that alpha-cypermethrin induced an increase in body weight and in plasma glucose and lipid levels, as well as in plasma aspartate a…

Hepatic and very low-density lipoprotein fatty acids in obese offspring of overfed dams.

2010

The combined effects of developmental programming and high-fat feeding at weaning on fatty acid metabolism of the offspring are not well known. In the present study, we aim at characterizing the influence of maternal and offspring's own diets on liver and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) lipids; fatty acid profiles of VLDL and liver phospholipids, triglycerides, and cholesteryl esters; and hepatic enzyme activities. Twenty obese male rats born to cafeteria diet-fed dams and 20 control rats born to control diet-fed dams were selected. At weaning, 10 rats of each group were fed control or cafeteria diet. Obese rats had a significant increase in serum glucose, insulin, leptin, VLDL apolipop…

The impact of maternal weight in pregnancy on glucose metabolism in non-diabetic offspring in late adulthood

2019

Aims: We aimed to examine the association between maternal adiposity and glucose metabolism in adult offspring without diabetes, simultaneous taking offspring own adiposity into account. Methods: This longitudinal birth cohort study (Helsinki Birth Cohort Study) included 1,440 non-diabetic subjects examined at a mean age of 62 years. Subjects were divided into quartiles according to maternal body mass index (BMI). The impact of maternal BMI on offspring body composition was also studied. Results: There were no differences in fasting glucose between the groups. In men, maternal BMI was inversely associated with mean 2-hour glucose concentration after a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (p <0.…

Plasma corticosteroids, free fatty acids, insulin and glucose in maternal blood during delivery.

1970

Plasma-corticosteroids (PCS), free fatty acids (FFA), insulin and glucose were determined continously in maternal blood during the entire course of delivery, from the first stage of labour until 6 hours after delivery. A steep increase in the PCS and FFA concentration could be noticed from the onset of labour (PCS: 37,8±11.2 µg/100 ml;\(s_{\bar x} \),p≦0.01; FFA: 556±106.6 µVal/l;\(s_{\bar x} \),p≦0.01) to the birth of the child (PCS: 96.8±19,5 µg/100 ml;\(s_{\bar x} \),p≦0.01; FFA: 1129±220 µVal/l;\(s_{\bar x} \),p≦0.01) and basal levels were already reached 6 hours later (PCS: 36.0±18.5 µg/100 ml;\(s_{\bar x} \),p≦0.01; FFA: 538±192.8 µVal/l;\(s_{\bar x} \),p≦0.01).
