Conservative parotidectomy in infancy and childhood
1975
Summary The indication for operations of benign tumours of the salivary glands in infancy and childhood is taken with great caution and is only partially recommended as the therapy of choice. This applies especially to hemangiomas, since spontaneous retrogression has been observed and there is the danger of damage to the facial nerve during surgery. Knowing unsatisfactory late cases of hemangiomas the author recommends conservative parotidectomy in cases of fast-growing hemangiomas. The anatomic structures in infancy, as well as the lack of pneumatisation of the mastoid process and the fragility of the cartilagineous auditory meatus should be taken into consideration during surgical explora…
Hyaluronic Acid-Based Micelles as Ocular Platform to Modulate the Loading, Release, and Corneal Permeation of Corticosteroids
2017
The aim of this work is to prepare hyaluronic acid-based micelles as a platform to load corticosteroid drugs and to improve their corneal permeation after administration on the ocular surface. Three amphiphilic derivatives of hyaluronic acid (HA) are synthesized using different amounts of hexadecylamine (C16 -NH2 ). HAC16 a, HAC16 b, and HAC16 c derivatives are able to form micelles by the cosolvent evaporation method and to entrap corticosteroids (dexamethasone, triamcinolone, triamcinolone acetonide). HAC16 a and HAC16 b micelles show the best results in terms of drug loading and particle size. They are also able to improve drug release compared to free drug solution or suspension. In add…
Gas Barrier, Rheological and Mechanical Properties of Immiscible Natural Rubber/Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber/Organoclay (NR/NBR/Organoclay) Blend N…
2020
In this paper, gas permeability studies were performed on materials based on natural rubber/acrylonitrile butadiene rubber blends and nanoclay incorporated blend systems. The properties of natural rubber (NR)/nitrile rubber (NBR)/nanoclay nanocomposites, with a particular focus on gas permeability, are presented. The measurements of the barrier properties were assessed using two different gases—O2 and CO2—by taking in account the blend composition, the filler loading and the nature of the gas molecules. The obtained data showed that the permeability of gas transport was strongly affected by: (i) the blend composition—it was observed that the increase in acrylonitrile butadiene rubber compon…
Asymmetric polysulfone and polyethersulfone membranes: effects of thermodynamic conditions during formation on their performance
2000
Abstract Membranes of polysulfone (PSU) and polyethersulfone (PES) were prepared from ternary and quaternary mixtures containing N , N -dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent, water as non-solvent, and acetone (AC) as additive. The conditions for phase inversion and the desired phase separation mechanisms were selected on the basis of the phase behavior determined for the solvent/non-solvent/polymer systems. The influences of the composition of the casting solution, of the support, and of film thickness on structure and permeation properties of the membranes were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) plus flux and separation experiments. The mechanisms of phase inversion that should pr…
Studies on various reactor configurations for coupling photocatalysis and membrane processes in water purification
2002
General aspects and perspectives of heterogeneous photocatalysis for the treatment of polluted aqueous effluents are presented. Some experimental results obtained by using various configurations of photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) are reported. The configurations studied were: (i) irradiation of the cell containing the membrane, with three sub-cases: (i1) catalyst deposited on the membrane; (i2) catalyst in suspension, confined by means of the membrane; (i3) entrapment of the photocatalyst in a PSF membrane; (ii) irradiation of the re-circulation tank and catalyst in suspension confined by means of the membrane. In the case “(i)”, a preliminary investigation of membrane stability und…
Preparation of three-layered porous PLA/PEG scaffold: relationship between morphology, mechanical behavior and cell permeability.
2015
Interface tissue engineering (ITE) is used to repair or regenerate interface living tissue such as for instance bone and cartilage. This kind of tissues present natural different properties from a biological and mechanical point of view. With the aim to imitating the natural gradient occurring in the bone-cartilage tissue, several technologies and methods have been proposed over recent years in order to develop polymeric functionally graded scaffolds (FGS). In this study three-layered scaffolds with a pore size gradient were developed by melt mixing polylactic acid (PLA) and two water-soluble porogen agents: sodium chloride (NaCl) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). Pore dimensions were controll…
Development and evaluation of occlusive systems employing polyvinyl alcohol for transdermal delivery of sumatriptan succinate
2010
The aim of the present study was to develop a sumatriptan succinate transdermal system for applying migraine treatments efficiently and easily. For this system polyvinyl alcohol was employed as a matrix and Azone((R)) was added as a permeability enhancer. The physical characteristics, mechanical properties, and in vivo bioadhesion of the systems were evaluated, as was in vitro permeation across porcine skin. A uniform distribution of the drug in the matrix was observed, and moisture uptake values were constant. With regard to mechanical parameters, occlusive layer inclusion made the system more resistant, and no significant differences were detected with respect to other systems. Although A…
Gas Transport in Mixed Matrix Membranes: Two Methods for Time Lag Determination
2020
The most widely used method to measure the transport properties of dense polymeric membranes is the time lag method in a constant volume/pressure increase instrument. Although simple and quick, this method provides only relatively superficial, averaged data of the permeability, diffusivity, and solubility of gas or vapor species in the membrane. The present manuscript discusses a more sophisticated computational method to determine the transport properties on the basis of a fit of the entire permeation curve, including the transient period. The traditional tangent method and the fitting procedure were compared for the transport of six light gases (H2, He, O2, N2, CH4, and CO2) and ethane an…
Kinetic Ionic Permeation and Interfacial Doping of Supported Graphene
2019
Due to its outstanding electrical properties and chemical stability, graphene finds widespread use in various electrochemical applications. Although the presence of electrolytes strongly affects its electrical conductivity, the underlying mechanism has remained elusive. Here, we employ terahertz spectroscopy as a contact-free means to investigate the impact of ubiquitous cations (Li+, Na+, K+, and Ca2+) in aqueous solution on the electronic properties of SiO2-supported graphene. We find that, without applying any external potential, cations can shift the Fermi energy of initially hole-doped graphene by ∼200 meV up to the Dirac point, thus counteracting the initial substrate-induced hole dop…
Characterization of Chemical Composition along the Molar Mass Distribution in Polyolefin Copolymers by GPC Using a Modern Filter-Based IR Detector
2013
Summary Gel permeation chromatography (GPC), also known as size exclusion chromatography (SEC), is the technique routinely used at high temperature to analyze the molar mass distribution in polyolefins. The distribution of comonomer along the molar mass distribution in a copolymer is a key microstructural feature that determines the macroscopic properties of the material, and thus, its range of possible applications and performance. The direct coupling of a modern filter-based infrared (IR) detector to a high temperature GPC instrument, by means of a heated flow-through cell, is here described. The analyses are carried out by recording the continuous IR absorbance chromatograms at selected …
