Alterations in the Emotional Regulation Process in Gambling Addiction: The Role of Anger and Alexithymia
2017
This study aims at the assessment of alexithymia and anger levels in 100 treatment-seeking pathological gamblers compared with controls, who were matched for age, gender and education. Furthermore a positive correlation between alexithymia, anger and severity of gambling disorder and a relationship between gambling behaviour and anger after controlling for alexithymia, are investigated. Finally the role that gender plays in anger in pathological gamblers was also evaluated. Psychological assessment includes the South Oaks Gambling Screen, State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-2 and the twenty-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale. Statistical analysis of the results shows a higher level of anger …
Catalytic cracking of n-alkane naphtha: The impact of olefin addition and active sites differentiation
2015
An extended dual kinetic model allows to fit the n-heptane cracking results working in a wide range of reaction conditions. The duality of the model is provided by the contribution of monomolecular and bimolecular cracking mechanisms. It takes into account the role played by the olefins formed on the global cracking or added within the feed. Furthermore by means of this model and the kinetic parameters obtained when cracking n-heptane on ZSM-5, it has been observed that, while some characterization techniques show a homogeneous zeolite surface from the point of view of the active sites, rigorous kinetic experiments point to the possibility that the reactant sees a heterogeneous surface with…
Understanding the complexity of IgE-related phenotypes from childhood to young adulthood: A Mechanisms of the Development of Allergy (MeDALL) seminar.
2012
Mechanisms of the Development of Allergy (MeDALL), a Seventh Framework Program European Union project, aims to generate novel knowledge on the mechanisms of initiation of allergy. Precise phenotypes of IgE-mediated allergic diseases will be defined in MeDALL. As part of MeDALL, a scientific seminar was held on January 24, 2011, to review current knowledge on the IgE-related phenotypes and to explore how a multidisciplinary effort could result in a new integrative translational approach. This article provides a summary of the meeting. It develops challenges in IgE-related phenotypes and new clinical and epidemiologic approaches to the investigation of allergic phenotypes, including cluster a…
dIvergEnt: How IgE Axis Contributes to the Continuum of Allergic Asthma and Anti-IgE Therapies
2017
[EN] Asthma is an airway disease characterised by chronic inflammation with intermittent or permanent symptoms including wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and cough, which vary in terms of their occurrence, frequency, and intensity. The most common associated feature in the airways of patients with asthma is airway inflammation. In recent decades, efforts have been made to characterise the heterogeneous clinical nature of asthma. The interest in improving the definitions of asthma phenotypes and endotypes is growing, although these classifications do not always correlate with prognosis nor are always appropriate therapeutic approaches. Attempts have been made to identify the m…
RESISTANCE AND TOLERANCE IN A HOST PLANT–HOLOPARASITIC PLANT INTERACTION: GENETIC VARIATION AND COSTS
2002
Host organisms are believed to evolve defense mechanisms (i.e., resistance and/or tolerance) under selective pressures exerted by natural enemies. A prerequisite for the evolution of resistance and tolerance is the existence of genetic variation in these traits for natural selection to act. However, selection for resistance and/or tolerance may be constrained by negative genetic correlations with other traits that affect host fitness. We studied genetic variation in resistance and tolerance against parasitic infection and the potential fitness costs associated with these traits using a novel study system, namely the interaction between a flowering plant and a parasitic plant. In this system…

Female reactions to male absence after pairing in the pied flycatcher
1994
Mating with an already mated pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) male is costly for a female. Two hypotheses explain why some females still mate with already mated males. The deception hypothesis suggests that some females mate with already mated males since it is difficult to assess perfectly the mating status of a male with separate territories (polyterritoriality). The search cost hypothesis states that females are aware of male mating status but the costs of searching for an unmated male exceed costs associated with the status of secondary female. One potential cue that could disclose a male's mating status is the existence of brief visits to the primary territory by polyterritorial ma…
Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Nonclassical d 0 Cyclopentadienyl Polyhydride Complexes of Molybdenum and Tungsten
1998
Low-temperature protonation of compounds Cp{sup *}MH{sub 5}(PMe{sub 3}) (M = Mo, 1; W, 2) by HBF{sub 4}{center_dot}Et{sub 2}O in CD{sub 2}Cl{sub 2} or CDFCl{sub 2} affords the thermally unstable hexahydride derivatives [Cp{sup *}MH{sub 6}(PMe{sub 3})]{sup +} (M = Mo, 3; W, 4). The corresponding protonation of 1- and 2-d{sup 5} affords 3- and 4-d{sup 5}, respectively. The {Delta}{delta} on going from H{sub 6} to HD{sub 5} is small for both compounds, but positive for 3 and negative for 4, and no isotopic perturbation of resonance (IPR) is observed. The T{sub 1min} at 400 MHz for [Cp{sup *}MH{sub 6}(PMe{sub 3})]{sup +} apparently doubles on going from Mo to W (52 ms for 3 and approximately 10…
Changes in Body Composition in Anorexia Nervosa : Predictors of Recovery and Treatment Outcome
2015
The restoration of body composition (BC) parameters is considered to be one of the most important goals in the treatment of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). However, little is known about differences between AN diagnostic subtypes [restricting (AN-R) and binge/purging (AN-BP)] and weekly changes in BC during refeeding treatment. Therefore, the main objectives of our study were twofold: 1) to assess the changes in BC throughout nutritional treatment in an AN sample and 2) to analyze predictors of BC changes during treatment, as well as predictors of treatment outcome. The whole sample comprised 261 participants [118 adult females with AN (70 AN-R vs. 48 AN-BP), and 143 healthy controls].…
Accumulation of Amphotericin B in Human Macrophages Enhances Activity against Aspergillus fumigatus Conidia: Quantification of Conidial Kill at the S…
1998
ABSTRACT A cytofluorometric assay that allowed assessment of damage to phagocytosed Aspergillus fumigatus conidia at the single-cell level was developed. After ingestion by monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs), conidia were reisolated by treatment of the cells with streptolysin O, a pore-forming toxin with lytic properties on mammalian cells but not on fungi. The counts obtained by staining of damaged conidia with propidium iodide and quantification by cytofluorometry correlated with colony counts. By the use of this method, we demonstrate that MDMs differentiated in vitro by low-dose granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor and gamma interferon have only a limited capacity to damage…
