Regulation by oestrogens of tachykinin NK3 receptor expression in the rat uterus.

1997

The expression of the tachykinin NK3 receptor and its regulation by ovarian steroids were analyzed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in uteri from ovariectomized rats. A single transcript corresponding to the 325-bp product expected for the tachykinin NK3 receptor was detected in uteri from olive oil-treated (control) ovariectomized rats. The level of tachykinin NK3 receptor mRNA in progesterone-treated animals was similar to that observed in uteri from control ones. Tachykinin NK3 receptor mRNA levels were significantly smaller in uteri from oestrogen-treated ovariectomized rats, with approximately a 32-fold decrease. These findings suggest that oestrogen, but not…

Darstellung und Reaktionen von 2-Methylen-canrenon

1995

Healthcare associated pathogens in a changing world

2014

In developed countries about 10% of the hospitalizations are complicated by a healthcare-associated infection [1]. Up to 75% of these infections are due to multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) [1]. Antimicrobial resistant bacterial infections are associated to higher morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs than those caused by susceptible organisms [1]. The findings of the point prevalence survey in European acute care hospitals published in 2013 by the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) show large variations between countries and between different regions of the same country, with Italy being allocated within the high-endemic areas for both MRSA and MDROs [2]. Des…

PO-0779 Which Parameters Are Mandatory In Urinary Tract Infection In Children?

2014

Background The protocol of investigations in urinary tract infection (UTI) in children mandatory includes urianalysis, uroculture, reactive C protein (RCP), blood urea (BUN), renal ultrasonography and scintigraphy. Each one of these has limits to perform in children. Aims To establish the correlations between UTI investigations for argumentation the therapeutic decision. Methods Retrospective study of hospitalised paediatric patients for UTI. The study parameters were: age, symptoms, RCP, BUN, uroculture, renal ultrasonography, urinanalysis (leukocytes, nitrites, pH, density, proteins, erythrocytes, ascorbic acid-AA). Results Were studied 243 hospitalised and treated with antibiotics UTI. U…

Product of aromatase activity in intact LNCaP and MCF-7 human cancer cells

1997

We investigated conversion rates of androgens to estrogens in cultured, hormone-responsive prostate (LNCaP) and breast (MCF-7) human cancer cells. For this purpose, we adopted an intact cell analysis, whereby cells were incubated for different incubation times in the presence of close-to-physiological (1 nM) or supraphysiological (1 μM) concentrations of labelled androgen precursors, i.e. testosterone (T) and androstenedione (Δ4Ad). The aromatase activity, as measured by estrogen formation, was detected in LNCaP cells (0.5 pmol/ml), even though to a significantly lower extent than in MCF-7 cells (5.4 pmol/ml), using 1 μM T after 72 h incubation. Surprisingly, LNCaP cells displayed a much hi…

Considerazioni su un caso di actinomicosi cervicale

2005

Actinomycosis is a bacterial infection due to Gram positive bacteria of Actinomyces genus. Actinomyces israelii is the most common in human infection. The authors described a case occurred in a 43 aged woman with a clinical presentation of a right submandibular indurative mass. After surgery, histological examination showed a granulomatous tissue with many actinomycetes. Patient was submitted to treatment with i.v penicillin. On the 11th day antibiotic therapy was replaced with ceftriaxone and teicoplanina. Patient did not present intercurrence during this period and presented improvement of the lesion.Actinomycosis is an uncommon disease. Establishment of the definite diagnosis requires a hi…

Bloodstream infections in intensive care unit patients: Distribution and antibiotic resistance of bacteria

2015

Vincenzo Russotto,1 Andrea Cortegiani,1 Giorgio Graziano,2 Laura Saporito,2 Santi Maurizio Raineri,1 Caterina Mammina,2 Antonino Giarratano1 1Department of Biopathology and Medical Biotechnologies (DIBIMED), Section of Anaesthesia, Analgesia, Intensive Care and Emergency, Paolo Giaccone University Hospital, University of Palermo, Palermo, Italy; 2Department of Sciences for Health Promotion and Mother-Child Care, University of Palermo, Palermo, Italy Abstract: Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are among the leading infections in critically ill patients. The case-fatality rate associated with BSIs in patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) reaches 35%–50%. The emergence and diffusi…

Clinical pain evaluation with intraoral vibration device during local anesthetic injections

2014

Objectives: To evaluate the clinical pain during local anesthetic injection using such intra-oral device. Study Design: A comparative split-mouth clinical study to evaluate clinical pain was conducted among the subjects who required bilateral local anesthetic intra-oral injections. Results: A total of 99 subjects participated in the study out of which 39 were female. A total of 256 local anesthetic injections were administered to all the subjects with at least one pair of similar local anesthetic injections. Comparison of mean VAS score for anticipated pain in without vibration group was significantly higher in all types of nerve blocks when compared to that of with vibration. Similarly, th…

Cancer-Associated Deep Vein Thrombosis: The Role of Residual Vein Thrombosis for Assessing the Duration of Low Molecular Weight Heparin (the EXTENDED…

2014

Abstract Introduction. The optimal duration of Low Molecular Weight Heparin (LMWH) after cancer associated deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is unknown; current guidelines suggest to prolong anticoagulation until cancer is active. We have recently demonstrated, in a randomized trial, that detection of Residual Vein Thrombosis (RVT) after 6 months of LMWH identify patients who require or not extension of therapy with anticoagulants (JCO in press). Now we present data of a prospective study evaluating a RVT-based management of patients with cancer-associated DVT, in whom LMWH has been extended up to 2 years in patients considered at high-risk for recurrent DVT because of persistence of RVT. Material…
