2016
In this essay we address one of the most important poetic subgenres in the tradition of Carmelite women: the works composed for ceremonies of vestition and solemn profession in which the nuns left behind his mundane life and opened a new life as the wife of Jesus. First of all, we provide a general overview of the customs and functions of the poetry in the Discalced Carmelites, which has been already analysed in the context of the Hispanic literature, but rarely from the perspective of the Catalan area. Secondly, we present and contextualize a corpus of twenty-five unpublished compositions on vestitions and professions, copied in the manuscript of the Discalced Carmelites of Barcelona.

Beginning from the discovery, in the “Archivio di Stato” of Palermo, o…
Anthony Collins on the Status of Consciousness
2014
Anthony Collins (1676-1729) maintains that consciousness might be a material process or result from material processes. On the one hand, Collins accepts Locke’s view that from consciousness, i.e., the activity of thinking, we acquire no knowledge about the nature of the thinking substance. On the other, he takes seriously Samuel Clarke’s challenge that the thinking substance must be suitably unified because consciousness is unified. In this paper, I argue that, throughout his correspondence with Clarke, Collins maintains that consciousness signifies actual thinking and does not refer to the capacity of thinking. His main materialist thesis is that the powers of parts of material systems can…
This paper will present a sample of the most outstanding Almohad ceramics that are preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Borriana. These pieces have been found during the archaeological excav…
Alimentación y salud en la Valencia medieval. Teorías y prácticas
2013
The aim of this article is to provide an initial survey about the relationship between food habits and health in a Mediterranean city during the Late Middle Ages, by comparing medical treatises, gastronomic recipes and the archival sources that tell us about the actual expenses in food. Through this comparison, and by using accounting records of aristocratic houses, merchant enterprises, convents and hospitals, we can observe the dietary guidelines that were applied, and their concordance with the galenic principles of University medicine. Moreover, we attempt to assess what were the key factors in the evolution of these theories’ guidelines, and how they were probably rather a way to appro…
Aixo ens …
CATALANI E VALENZANI A SCIACCA NEL TARDO MEDIOEVO: RELIGIOSITÀ E FONDAZIONI ASSISTENZIALI
2020
Three of the six medieval hospitals in Sciacca were founded by merchants and nobles, members of Catalan and…
Salute dei re, salute del popolo. Mangiare e curarsi nella Sicilia tardomedievale

Dining and personal health care are two dimensions which are strongly connected to the body, between need and pleasure. They are two dimensions which have many social, local, religious and economic implications involving knowledge and different therapies related to age and gender. The social role is equally important. With a focus on the court (noble, episcopal, real) and the cities, the present work focuses on the methods and the uses of healing practices of both kings and islanders.[it] Mangiare e curarsi sono due dimensioni fortemente connesse al corpo, tra bisogno e piacere.
