The Mechanism of Action of Carbonic Anhydrase

1990

A survey of the structure-function relationship in the enzyme carbonic anhydrase is presented. The coordination number around the metal ion in derivatives inhibited with some anions is stressed as well as the role of the cavity in determining the coordination number. Inferences on the enzyme-substrate interactions are presented.

Water-soluble chlorophyll proteins (WSCP) from Brassicaceae form homotetrameric chlorophyll (Chl)–protein complexes binding one Chl per apoprotein and no carotenoids. Despite the lack of photoprotecting pigments, the complex-bound Chls displays a remarkable stability toward photodynamic damage. On the basis of a mutational study, we show that not only the presence of the phytyls is necessary for photoprotection in WSCPs, as we previously demonstrated, but also is their correct conformation and localization. The extreme heat stability of WSCP also depends on the presence of the phytyl chains, confirming their relevance for the unusual stability of WSCP.

Morphogenic potential of mechanically isolated single cells from Digitalis obscura L. callus

1989

Calli from hypocotyl and root explants of Digitalis obscura L. showed regeneration of adventitious shoots, roots and embryos when transferred to Murashige & Skoog medium supplemented with cytokinins alone or in combination with auxins. Optimum shoot-bud formation was achieved in the presence of IAA and BA, while roots mainly appeared either in absence of growth regulators or with IAA and Kn. Embryo formation took place only in those combinations that included Kn. Embryo development was influenced by the type of auxin, and precocious germination occurred in media with NAA. Mechanically isolated cells from hypocotyl- and root-derived calli were plated in MS medium supplemented with several IA…

Plant regeneration from cultured leaves of Lavandula latifolia Medicus: Influence of growth regulators and illumination conditions

1989

Leaves were obtained from 4-week-old seedlings of Lavandula latifolia Medicus grown in vitro. Leaf explants were then cultured on MS medium supplemented with different concentrations and combinations of the auxins IAA or NAA with the cytokinin BA and maintained under three illumination conditions, 16h photoperiod, darkness or darkness followed by a photoperiod, to assess morphogenic responses. Irrespective of illumination conditions, bud regeneration was achieved only in media containing BA or BA/auxin combinations, with the best results being obtained in the presence of BA and 0.06 or 0.6 μM IAA or NAA. A photoperiod of 16h appeared to yield the best response in terms of bud regeneration p…

(-)-(5S,8S,9R,10S,13R,14R)-15,16-Dideoxy-16,17-epoxy-16-oxospongian-15-yl acetate.

2006

The title compound (aplyroseol-14), C22H34O4, exhibits a lactone-based structure that is novel for spongian-type diterpenoids. The structure, which features a six-membered lactone ring, was proposed by Arno, Gonzalez & Zaragoza [J. Org. Chem. (2003), 68, 1242–1251] on the basis of spectroscopic data and chemical correlations. This assignment has been confirmed, and it is shown that the molecule contains a trans–anti–trans 6/6/6 tricyclic hydrocarbon system and that the acetoxymethyl group lies in an equatorial position. Pairs of near-linear C—H⋯O interactions link molecules into extended chains.

Novel Porphyrin-Cholic Acid Conjugates as Receptors for Biologically Important Anions

2005

A series of novel receptors showing high binding affinity in aqueous media for biologically important anions are reported. These naturally chromophoric porphyrin-based receptors contain cholic acids connected via quaternary alkyl ammonium amido linkages.

Conservation of amino-acid chromatograms.

1951

IN filter-paper partition chromatography, the ninhydrin reaction has been used almost exclusively for the identification and quantitative assay of amino-acids. One of the chief disadvantages of the blue pigment formed in this reaction is its rapid fading on filter-paper chromatograms. This makes it difficult to construct permanent or semi-permanent reference maps from which not only the type of amino-acid, but also the approximate quantity of the unknown mixture, can be deduced.

Elution curves on spherosil gels in pure and mixed eluents of poly(dimethylsiloxane), PDMS, and poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA, as well as those of polystyrene, PS, just for comparison, have been determined. In a general way, PDMS elution volumers fit to those of PS, whereas PMMA elution curves shift to higher retention volumes. The differences in retention volumes between the different polymeric solutes have been interpreted in terms of differences in polymer-gel and polymer-solvent interactions. Hydrogen-bonding seems to be the main contribution to solute-substrate interactions.

Synthesis and Platinum (II) Complexes of Different Polyazacyclophane Receptors

2015

During the last years, research on coordination chemistry of platinum has aroused great interest due to their potential biological applications. Herein, we report the interaction of PtCI42- with different polyazacyclophanes containing a pyridine unit as aromatic spacer. Formation of complexes has been studied by 1H and 195Pt NMR spectroscopy. Analysis of the recorded spectra of D2O solutions containing L and PtCl42- in a 1:1 molar ratio at acidic pH shows the evolution with time of the 1H and 195Pt signals. Different crystal structures have been solved by X-ray diffraction analysis. At acidic pHs, the metal ion is coordinated by the central amino group of the macrocyclic cavity and three ch…

Reversible, room-temperature C—C bond activation of benzene by an isolable metal complex

2019

The activation of C-C bonds is of fundamental interest in the construction of complex molecules from petrochemical feedstocks. In the case of the archetypal aromatic hydrocarbon benzene, C-C cleavage is thermodynamically disfavored, and is brought about only by transient highly reactive species generated in situ. Here we show that the oxidative addition of the C-C bond in benzene by an isolated metal complex is not only possible, but occurs at room temperature and reversibly at a single aluminium center in [(NON)Al]- (where NON = 4,5-bis(2,6-diisopropylanilido)-2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene). Selectivity over C-H bond activation is achieved kinetically and allows for the generation…
