Mourning Missing Migrants: Ambiguous Loss and the Grief of Strangers

While the term missing refers to various instances and practices, we focus on the bodies of deceased migrants that remain unidentified, and on the inability of families to mourn someone when there is no body to grieve for. We deploy some ethnographic fragments of how Italian communities sometimes mourn those who are buried without a name and we describe the many problems of mourning someone whose fate is unknown through a discussion of the notion of ‘ambiguous loss’. Our contribution articulates some of the politics around deaths in migration by considering how missing migrants and their bodies are mourned in multiplicity. peerReviewed
Longitudinal Changes in Suicide Bereavement Experiences : A Qualitative Study of Family Members over 18 Months after Loss

Family members bereaved by their loved ones’ suicidal death normally undergo a complicated and lengthy bereavement process. In this qualitative case study, we explored longitudinal changes in the suicide bereavement process by applying assimilation analysis, based on the Assimilation Model (AM) and the Assimilation of Problematic Experiences Scale (APES), to longitudinal interview data collected from two Chinese suicide-bereaved individuals within the first 18 months after their loss. However, it is not clear how cardiorespiratory rhythms modulate such basic processes as synaptic plasticity thought to underlie learning. „Memory turn” in the humanities allows to approach old problems from a new perspective. The author argues that the sphere of complicated Russian-Polish relations should be presented as a conflict between two distinct collective memories. The author considers “memory” as strictly interconnected with so called “non-memory” (i.e. as set of facts not related to memory or superseded by it). Lattice Boltzmann Simulations at Petascale on Multi-GPU Systems with Asynchronous Data Transfer and Strictly Enforced Memory Read Alignment

The lattice Boltzmann method is a well-established numerical approach for complex fluid flow simulations. Recently general-purpose graphics processing units have become accessible as high-performance computing resources at large-scale. We report on implementing a lattice Boltzmann solver for multi-GPU systems that achieves 0.69 PFLOPS performance on 16384 GPUs. In addition to optimizing the data layout on the GPUs and eliminating the halo sites, we make use of the possibility to overlap data transfer between the host CPU and the device GPU with computing on the GPU. Visual Distraction Effects of In-Car Text Entry Methods

Three text entry methods were compared in a driving simulator study with 17 participants. Ninety-seven drivers’ occlusion distance (OD) data mapped on the test routes was used as a baseline to evaluate the methods’ visual distraction potential. Only the voice recognition-based text entry tasks passed the set verification criteria. Handwriting tasks were experienced as the most demanding and the voice recognition tasks as the least demanding. Memorializing mass deaths at the border: two cases from Canberra (Australia) and Lampedusa (Italy)

In this paper, we compare two seemingly very similar instances in which individuals and organizations within the borders of the global North have memorialized the deaths of irregular migrants at sea: the SIEV X memorial in Australia’s national capital Canberra, and the Giardino della memoria (Garden of Remembrance) on the Italian island of Lampedusa. Unlike ephemeral manifestations of grief, potentially these memorials have effects that reach well beyond their creation.
