Innovations in the Art of Microneurosurgery for Reaching Deep-Seated Cerebral Lesions.

2019

Deep-seated cerebral lesions have fascinated and frustrated countless surgical innovators since the dawn of the microneurosurgical era. To determine the optimal approach, the microneurosurgeon must take into account the characteristics and location of the pathological lesion as well as the operator's range of technical expertise. Increasingly, microneurosurgeons must select between multiple operative corridors that can provide access to the surgical target. Innovative trajectories have emerged for many indications that provide more flexible operative angles and superior exposure but result in longer working distances and more technically demanding maneuvers. In this article, we highlight 4 …

Invazīva pneimokoku slimība universitātes slimnīcā Latvijā

2018

2002

Within the scope of a prospective clinical study during 2001 in Rhineland-Palatinate specimen from sera and cerebrospinal fluids of 163 patients with suspected meningitis were controlled in an enzyme immunoassay concerning a TBE infection. Questionable results were checked via a neutralisation test. In no case such an infection was confirmed. No virus specific nucleic acids could be detected in 998 nymphs and adults of Ixodes ricinus in an additional investigation in 2000. Therefore Rhineland-Palatinate has to be considered as a region with low virus prevalence. A general recommendation for vaccination is not necessary.

Clinical, immunological, and molecular analysis in a large cohort of patients with X-linked agammaglobulinemia: an Italian multicenter study

2002

A questionnaire-based retrospective clinical and immunological survey was conducted in 73 males with a definite diagnosis of X-linked agammaglobulinemia based on BTK sequence analysis. Forty-four were sporadic and 29 familial cases. At December 2000, the patients' ages ranged from 2 to 33 years; mean age at diagnosis and mean duration of follow-up were 3.5 and 10 years respectively. After the mid-1980s all but 2 were on intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) substitution therapy, with residual IgG >500 mg/dl in 94% of the patients at the time of enrollment. Respiratory infections were the most frequent manifestation both prior to diagnosis and over follow-up. Chronic lung disease (CLD) was prese…

Recognizable neonatal clinical features of aplasia cutis congenita

2020

Abstract Background Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC), classified in nine groups, is likely to be underreported, since milder isolated lesions in wellbeing newborns could often be undetected, and solitary lesions in the context of polymalformative syndromes could not always be reported. Regardless of form and cause, therapeutic options have in common the aim to restore the deficient mechanical and immunological cutaneous protection and to limit the risk of fluid leakage or rupture of the exposed organs. We aimed to review our institutional prevalence, comorbidities, treatment and outcome of newborns with ACC. Methods We conducted a retrospective study including all newborns affected by ACC and …

Comparison of loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) and PCR for the diagnosis of infection with Trypanosoma brucei ssp. in equids in The Gamb…

2020

Introduction:\ud Infection of equids with Trypanosoma brucei (T. brucei) ssp. is of socioeconomic importance across sub-Saharan Africa as the disease often progresses to cause fatal meningoencephalitis. Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) has been developed as a cost-effective molecular diagnostic test and is potentially applicable for use in field-based laboratories.\ud \ud Part I:\ud Threshold levels for T. brucei ssp. detection by LAMP were determined using whole equine blood specimens spiked with known concentrations of parasites. Results were compared to OIE antemortem gold standard of T. brucei-PCR (TBR-PCR).\ud \ud Results I:\ud Threshold for detection of T. brucei ssp. on …

Cerebrospinal fluid pharmacokinetics of ceftaroline in neurosurgical patients with an external ventricular drain

2019

IF 5.217; International audience; BackgroundOwing to its antibacterial properties, ceftaroline could be attractive for prevention or treatment of bacterial post-neurosurgical meningitis/ventriculitis. However, few data are available concerning its meningeal concentrations.ObjectivesTo investigate ceftaroline CSF pharmacokinetics in ICU patients with an external ventricular drain (EVD).MethodsPatients received a single 600 mg dose of ceftaroline as a 1 h intravenous infusion. Blood and CSF samples were collected before and 0.5, 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h after the end of the infusion. Concentrations were assayed in plasma and CSF by LC–MS/MS. A two-step compartmental pharmacokinetic analysis was c…

Antibody persistence and immune memory 15 months after priming with an investigational tetravalent meningococcal tetanus toxoid conjugate vaccine (Me…

2012

The present extension study, conducted in children originally vaccinated at 12–14 mo or 3–5 y of age, assessed antibody persistence and immune memory induced by an investigational tetravalent meningococcal serogroups A, C, W-135 and Y tetanus toxoid conjugate vaccine (MenACWY-TT). In the original study, participants were randomized to receive one dose of MenACWY-TT or licensed age-appropriate meningococcal control vaccines. Fifteen months post-vaccination, all participants underwent serum sampling to evaluate antibody persistence and participants previously vaccinated as toddlers received a polysaccharide challenge to assess immune memory development.   Exploratory comparisons showed that (…

Intrinsic Expression of Drug Resistance-Associated Factors in Meningiomas

2001

Meningiomas, commonly benign tumors, rarely display aggressive behavior by recurrences and invasion. In addition to surgery, irradiation is beneficial for recurrent, atypical, and malignant meningiomas. The role of chemotherapy, however, remains controversial, although there is evidence that meningiomas respond well to adjuvant chemotherapy. A major obstacle in chemotherapy remains drug resistance with reduced cellular drug accumulation through membrane efflux pumps, drug detoxification, and alterations in drug target specificity. In 84 classic, atypical, and malignant meningiomas, the immunohistochemical expression profile of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), multidrug resistance-associated protein (…
