Histologically benign metastatic meningioma: morphological and cytogenetic study. Case report.
2003
✓ The authors report on a 75-year-old man with histologically benign fibroblastic meningioma metastasizing to the lung, liver, spleen, and kidney. The original tumor exhibited a complex karyotype involving different structural and numerical anomalies associated with monosomy of chromosome 22. The implication of chromosome 1p36 was confirmed by fluorescence in situ hybridization in most interphase nuclei. Metastases occurred 4 months after incomplete resection with prior therapeutic embolization. The recurrent tumor in turn displayed anaplastic features and an increased Ki-67 labeling index. Genetic alterations in such morphologically benign meningiomas have been implicated in the malignant …
Severe complications of varicella in previously healthy children in Germany: a 1-year survey.
2001
Objective.Varicella is a common infectious disease, usually benign and self-limited, and complications are believed to be rare. The purpose of this study was to describe the epidemiology of severe varicella complications in immunologically healthy children in Germany.Methods.Information on any admission of children with a severe complication associated with chickenpox was solicited throughout 1997 from all 485 pediatric hospitals in Germany using an established surveillance system. The case definition included nonimmunocompromised individuals who were up to 16 years of age and hospitalized with neurologic complications, bacterial superinfections, or hematologic complications.Results.The res…
Survey on Current Postnatal Surgical Management of Myelomeningocele in Germany.
2016
Background and Study Aims Although postnatal surgery can be regarded as the standard of care for open myelomeningocele (MMC), there is no uniform treatment for this condition in Germany. This study assessed the current situation regarding the management of open MMC, a first and essential step toward the development of standards of practice. Patients and Methods In the second half of 2009, we had sent standardized questionnaires to 139 neurosurgery departments and 73 pediatric surgery departments (number of returned questionnaires: 98 and 62, respectively) to identify the principles of MMC management. Newborns with open MMC are treated in 57 of the neurosurgery departments and in 18 of the…
Perfusion computed tomography of intracranial meningiomas: In vivo correlation of cerebral blood volume and vascular permeability
2015
Background A noninvasive method to predict the grade of a meningioma would be desirable since it would anticipate information about tumour nature, recurrence and improve tumour management and outcomes. The aim of the present study was to assess the ability of perfusion computed tomography (PCT) technique in predicting the meningioma grade before surgery. Data from PCT, such as cerebral blood volume (CBV) and permeability surface (PS), were correlated with immunohistolopathological information. Methods Twenty-three patients with a diagnosis of intracranial meningioma underwent PCT for pre-surgical evaluation of CBV and PS. During surgery, samples from the centre and periphery of the tumour w…
Ten-year Experience with the Supraorbital Subfrontal Approach through an Eyebrow Skin Incision
2005
Abstract OBJECTIVE: More than ever before, the priority in contemporary neurosurgery is to achieve the greatest therapeutic effect while causing the least iatrogenic injury. The evolution of microsurgical techniques with refined instrumentation and illumination and the enormous development of preoperative and intraoperative diagnostic tools enable neurosurgeons to treat different lesions through limited and specific keyhole approaches. METHODS: Based on our surgical experience, the technique of supraorbital subfrontal craniotomy is described in detail in this article. After an eyebrow skin incision is made, a limited supraorbital craniotomy is performed with a width of 15 to 25 mm and a hei…
Immuno-toxicological Evaluation of the Adjuvant Formulations for Experimental Anti-meningococcal Vaccines without Aluminium Hydroxide
2019
International audience; The proteoliposomes and cochleates are used as adjuvants for vaccines since they are potent immune stimulators. However, the hyper stimulation of the immune system provoked by adjuvants can cause immunetoxicological side effects. The present study was carried out to evaluate the toxic and immuno-toxicological effects of new adjuvants for anti-meningococci vaccines based on neo-proteoliposomes (nPL) and neocochleates (nCh), in Balb/c mice that were administered doses of 15 µg each, over periods of 14 days through intramuscular route and three inoculations with the same doses through intranasal route, every 7 days. The Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy show…

Neurosurgical Odyssey: Case of Anaplastic Meningiomatosis.
2017
According to the World Health Organization grading, meningiomas are classified as grade I (benign), grade II (atypical), and grade III (anaplastic). Most of them (81%) are benign, 15% are atypical, and 4% are anaplastic. Metastasis is a rare event in meningiomas, occurring in <1% of cases. In most types of tumors, distant metastasis is an incontrovertible indication of malignancy. This is not so clearly the case with meningiomas, mostly in the multiple localization of these tumors, known as meningiomatosis. Here we would like to share our experience with a unique case of an atypical meningioma, which evolved in an anaplastic multiple meningiomatosis, invading the brain and associated wit…
Structure-Guided, Single-Point Modifications in the Phosphinic Dipeptide Structure Yield Highly Potent and Selective Inhibitors of Neutral Aminopepti…
2014
Seven crystal structures of alanyl aminopeptidase from Neisseria meningitides (the etiological agent of meningitis, NmAPN) complexed with organophosphorus compounds were resolved to determine the optimal inhibitor–enzyme interactions. The enantiomeric phosphonic acid analogs of Leu and hPhe, which correspond to the P1 amino acid residues of well-processed substrates, were used to assess the impact of the absolute configuration and the stereospecific hydrogen bond network formed between the aminophosphonate polar head and the active site residues on the binding affinity. For the hPhe analog, an imperfect stereochemical complementarity could be overcome by incorporating an appropriate P1 side…
