Synthesis of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) and encapsulation of cisplatin for targeted cancer therapies

2014

The aim of this PhD thesis is to elaborate mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) able to sustain the release of cisplatin into the intracellular compartments of solid tumors. The parametric study shows that morphological, structural and textural properties of MSNs-MCM-41, synthesized by sol-gel reaction by using TEOS as a silica source and CTAB as a structure-directing agent, depend on pH, stirring speed, temperature and extraction process of CTAB. The synthesis atmosphere has to be controlled in order to avoid the presence of ethanol and carbonate species which are responsible of necks between particles generating unstable suspensions of MSNs.MSNs were functionalized in order to control t…

Multilayered supported ionic liquids as catalysts for chemical fixation of carbon dioxide

2011

Multilayered, covalently supported ionic liquid phase (mlc-SILP) materials were synthesized by using a new approach based on the grafting of bis-vinylimidazolium salts on different types of silica or polymeric supports. The obtained materials were characterized and tested as catalysts in the reaction of supercritical carbon dioxide with various epoxides to produce cyclic carbonates. The material prepared by supporting a bromide bis-imidazolium salt on the ordered mesoporous silica SBA-15 was identified as the most active catalyst for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates and displayed improved productivity compared with known supported ionic liquid catalysts. The catalyst retained its high act…

Theoretical study of oligomeric alumatranes present in the chemistry of materials from micro to mesoporous molecular sieves and alumina composites

2008

Quantum chemical calculations using density functional theory have been carried out to investigate molecular precursors based on alumatranes which are one of the components with silatranes for the preparation of mesoporous aluminosilicate materials. In the same way, some oligomeric alumatranes of this study take part in chemical syntheses related to materials such as zeolites and alumina composite. Gas phase and solution equilibrium geometries of the alumatrane precursors were fully optimized at B3LYP level, modeling solvent effects using a self-consistent reaction field (SCRF). From these optimized geometries, calculations of the 1 H, 13 C and 27 Al NMR chemical shifts at GIAO/B3LYP/6-31G(…

Efficient Hot Electron Transfer in Quantum Dot-Sensitized Mesoporous Oxides at Room Temperature

2018

Hot carrier cooling processes represent one of the major efficiency losses in solar energy conversion. Losses associated with cooling can in principle be circumvented if hot carrier extraction toward selective contacts is faster than hot carrier cooling in the absorber (in so-called hot carrier solar cells). Previous work has demonstrated the possibility of hot electron extraction in quantum dot (QD)-sensitized systems, in particular, at low temperatures. Here we demonstrate a room-temperature hot electron transfer (HET) with up to unity quantum efficiency in strongly coupled PbS quantum dot-sensitized mesoporous SnO2. We show that the HET efficiency is determined by a kinetic competition b…

High‐Zirconium‐Content Nano‐Sized Bimodal Mesoporous Silicas

2006

Silica-based nanoparticulated bimodal mesoporous materials with high Zr content (43 ≥ Si/Zr ≥ 4) have been synthesized by a one-pot surfactant-assisted procedure from a hydroalcoholic medium using a cationic surfactant (CTMABr = cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) as structure-directing agent, and starting from molecular atrane complexes of Zr and Si as hydrolytic inorganic precursors. This preparative technique allows optimization of the dispersion of the Zr guest species in the silica walls. The bimodal mesoporous nature of the final high surface area nano-sized materials is confirmed by XRD, TEM, and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms. The small intraparticle mesopore system (with pore sizes…

Optical sensing of cyanide using hybrid biomolecular films

2006

The selective sensing of cyanide anions in water has been studied using a hybrid biomaterial composed of a mesoporous TiO2 film of crystalline nanoparticles and the protein hemoglobin. The mesoporous structure of the film prevents protein unfolding and also stabilizes the oxidized form of the prosthetic groups. Low-levels of cyanide anions (<0.2 ppm (0.2 mgr/L)) can be detected by monitoring the changes in the optical properties of the hybrid biomolecular films upon cyanide binding to the heme groups.

Carbons from second generation biomass as sustainable supports for catalytic systems

2018

Abstract In this study activated carbons were produced from the wood of three different wood species (pine, birch, spruce). The resulting activated carbons were characterized in bulk for ash content, carbon content (elemental analyses), specific surface area, and pore size distribution, and at the surface by measuring the autogenerated pH and studying their structure by XPS. All the samples presented high surface areas and appeared to be mesoporous materials (mesopores >80%). The carbons were then used as support for AuPt nanoparticles and tested in the liquid phase oxidation of glycerol (GLY) and in the hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA), two important chemicals from cellulose-based biom…

Multi-layered, covalently supported ionic liquid phase (mlc-SILP) as highly cross-linked support for recyclable palladium catalysts for the suzuki re…

2011

The reaction between an excess of 1,4-bis(3-vinylimidazolium-1-yl) bromide and a mercaptopropyl-modified amorphous silica gel or ordered mesoporous silica SBA-15 in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) afforded new materials, which have a high loading of imidazolium moieties. These materials, which contain a highly cross-linked polymeric network, have been denoted as multi-layered, covalently supported ionic liquid phase (mlc-SILP) and have been used as support for palladium catalysts containing a high loading of the metal (10 wt%). Such materials were characterized by several techniques (13C magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller technique, sma…

Peptide-Capped Mesoporous Nanoparticles: Toward a more Efficient Internalization of Alendronate

2020

[EN] Osteoporosis is an illness which appears when the osteoblast/osteoclast activities are unbalanced taking place bone resorption (caused by osteoclasts) in higher extension than bone formation (induced by osteoblasts). Alendronate is one of the most used drugs for osteoporosis treatment despite its scarce bioavailability. Here we present the synthesis and characterization of mesoporous gated nanoparticles (two sets) for the controlled release of alendronate. The first set of nanoparticles (S1) were loaded with sulforhodamine B and capped with a peptide that could be selectively hydrolyzed by cathepsin K enzyme (overexpressed in osteoclasts). The second set (S2) was functionalized with am…

Selective Surface Modification of SiO2−TiO2 Supports with Phosphonic Acids

2004

The selective surface modification by phosphonic acids of SiO2−TiO2 supports at the micrometer and molecular scale was investigated. Under aqueous conditions, phosphonic acids bind to TiO2 and not to SiO2 surfaces. A micropatterned support was prepared by electron beam microlithography and selectivity, of the surface modification was evidenced using scanning Auger electron spectroscopy (SAES). The second support was a mesoporous SiO2−TiO2 mixed oxide (10 mol % Ti) epoxidation catalyst prepared by sol−gel processing. Selectivity was deduced from the decrease of the catalytic activity upon modification and from chemical analysis; bonding modes to the surface were investigated using solid-stat…
