The Startup Scratch Book – Opening the Black Box of Startup Education

2021

Teaching entrepreneurship and startups is a challenging task. Approaches using real or simulated entrepreneurship as a teaching method are also common in startup education. However, as educators and researchers, we typically only observe the outcomes of the startup journey between weekly lectures and other meetings, whereas the actions taken by the student teams can seldom be observed. This makes the process a black box. All valuable learnings, realizations, and big ideas happen in the students’ minds, and little evidence exists to say what happened during the course. As a result, we are entirely missing out on the most critical elements of the learning process. To remedy this issue, we pro…

Experimental sulphide inhibition calibration method in nitrification processes: A case-study.

2020

[EN] Sulphide is one of the inhibitors in the nitrification process in WWTP in regions with sulphate rich soils. As little information is currently available on sulphide nitrification inhibition, the aim of this study was to develop a method based on a modification of the Successive Additions Method to calibrate the effect of sulphide on the activity of ammonia-oxidising bacteria (AOB) and nitrite-oxidising bacteria (NOB). The developed method was then applied to activated sludge samples from two WWTPs with different influent sulphide concentrations. In both cases, sulphide had a greater inhibitory effect on NOB than AOB activity. The sulphide inhibition was found to be lower in the activat…

Enhanced extraction of astragalosides from Radix Astragali by negative pressure cavitation-accelerated enzyme pretreatment.

2010

The optimal conditions for extraction of astragalosides III and IV (AGs III and IV) in Radix Astragali by negative pressure cavitation-accelerated enzyme pretreatment were studied on the basis of a Box-Behnken design and response surface methodology. Experimental results showed that negative pressure, amount of enzyme and incubation temperature were the main factors governing the enzyme pretreatment of Radix Astragali. The optimum parameters were obtained as follows: negative pressure -0.08 Mpa, amount of enzyme 1.48% (w/w of materials) and incubation temperature 45 degrees C. Under the optimal conditions, the maximal extraction yields of AGs III and IV were 0.103 and 0.325 mg/g, which were…

Effects of Age and Playing Tactics on the Individual Tactical Behavior in U10 and U12 Elite Spanish Soccer Players

2022

The aim of this paper was to explore the effects of age and playing tactics on the individual tactical behavior and performance in young soccer players. A total of 1247 individual possessions during 16 knockout matches from LaLiga Promises U12 tournament (n = 621) and LaLiga U10 Iscar Cup (n = 626) were analyzed by observational methodology. Multilevel and multivariate logistic regression models were created to explain the interdependent effects of age category and playing tactics on the individual tactical behavior and performance. Youth players performed most of their actions against defensive pressure (72.5%), during offensive support (91.3%) and receiving the ball facing forward (62.6%)…

Analysis of Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility model-based programmes applied in USA and Spain

2013

Caballero-Blanco P, Delgado-Noguera, MA, Escarti-Carbonell, A. Analysis of Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility model-based programmes applied in USA and Spain. J. Hum. Sport Exerc. Vol. 8, No. 2, pp. 427-441, 2013. Over the last three decades, several studies have applied Hellison’s Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR) model; most of them have generated strong empirical evidences that support that theoretical framework. TPSR is a programme for positive youth development through physical activity. This article compares the different studies that have implemented the TPSR model in the United States and Spain. This paper reviews those researches by analysing their key fea…

B-Spline Estimation in a Survey Sampling Framework

2021

Nonparametric regression models have been used more and more over the last years to model survey data and incorporate efficiently auxiliary information in order to improve the estimation of totals, means or other study parameters such as Gini index or poverty rate. B-spline nonparametric regression has the benefit of being very flexible in modeling nonlinear survey data while keeping many similarities and properties of the classical linear regression. This method proved to be efficient for deriving a unique system of weights which allowed to estimate in an efficient way and simultaneously many study parameters. Applications on real and simulated survey data showed its high efficiency. This …

Optimization of microwave-assisted extraction of polyphenols from Quercus bark

2015

Abstract Box–Behnken response surface methodology was used to investigate and optimize microwave assisted extraction (MAE) (treatment power and time) of antioxidant compounds, especially polyphenols, from bark extracts. Moreover, the effects of solvent composition (methanol and ethanol) particle size, and pH conditions were evaluated and optimized. In addition, the effects of MAE were compared to conventional solvent extraction at room temperature and reflux extraction (at 100 °C). The results indicated that all process variables had a significant effect on polyphenol and antioxidant recovery, except for methanol (p > 0.05). For instance, TPC and antioxidant activity were increased when hig…

Moral beings and becomings : children's moral practices in classroom peer interaction

2016

This study investigates children’s social and moral practices as they appear in everyday classroom peer interaction. Its focus is on the relations between children’s interaction and moral understandings in situ. Juxtaposing the most archetypal ways of addressing and investigating morality in mainstream educational psychology, this study approaches morality is as it handled and man- aged as part of everyday intersubjective interaction. Ethnomethodological approaches alongside with sociocultural views of thinking are employed as theoretical and analytical frameworks to delineate how children as moral agents use language and other semiotic resources to accomplish their local organization of mo…

Topology testing of phylogenies using least squares methods

2006

[Background] The least squares (LS) method for constructing confidence sets of trees is closely related to LS tree building methods, in which the goodness of fit of the distances measured on the tree (patristic distances) to the observed distances between taxa is the criterion used for selecting the best topology. The generalized LS (GLS) method for topology testing is often frustrated by the computational difficulties in calculating the covariance matrix and its inverse, which in practice requires approximations. The weighted LS (WLS) allows for a more efficient albeit approximate calculation of the test statistic by ignoring the covariances between the distances.
