Global sensitivity analysis in wastewater treatment modelling

Global sensitivity analysis (GSA) is a valuable tool to support the use of mathematical models. GSA allows the identifcation of the effect of model and input factor uncertainty on the model response, also considering the effect due to the interactions among factors. During recent years, the wastewater modelling feld has embraced the use of GSA. Wastewater modellers have tried to transfer the knowledge and experience from other disciplines and other water modelling felds.
General Economic Order Quantity Model for Lot Sizing with Quality Loss and Process Analysis

In this paper a new model GEOQ is proposed to decide the optimal lot sizing in production. The GEOQ modifies the classical EOQ method in several aspects. First it considers that there is always a probability that the production goes out-of-control; then it takes the time the process goes out-of-control as a stochastic quantity; and finally it adds quality loss to the economic models. The quality loss is calculated according to Taguchi’s quadratic loss function. and depends on the process failure models. Therefore, the optimal lot sizing is decided not only by the set-up cost and the holding cost but also by the quality loss during the manufacturing process.
Heuristics for the bandwidth colouring problem

The bandwidth colouring problem consists of assigning a colour to each vertex of a graph, so that the absolute value of the difference between the colours of adjacent vertices is at least the value of the weight of the associated edge. This problem generalises the classical vertex colouring problem and different heuristics have recently been proposed to obtain high quality solutions. In this paper we describe both memory-based and memory-less methods to solve the bandwidth colouring problem. Online metric learning using margin maximization has been introduced as a way to learn appropriate dissimilarity measures in an efficient way when information as pairs of examples is given to the learning system in a progressive way. Explicit recursivity into reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces

This paper presents a methodology to develop recursive filters in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHS). Unlike previous approaches that exploit the kernel trick on filtered and then mapped samples, we explicitly define model recursivity in the Hilbert space. The method exploits some properties of functional analysis and recursive computation of dot products without the need of pre-imaging. We illustrate the feasibility of the methodology in the particular case of the gamma-filter, an infinite impulse response (IIR) filter with controlled stability and memory depth. AbstractThis paper describes the collaborative development of an agenda for research on e-assessment in undergraduate mathematics. We built on an established approach to develop the agenda from the contributions of 22 mathematics education researchers, university teachers and learning technologists interested in this topic. The resulting set of 55 research questions are grouped into 5 broad themes: errors and feedback, student interactions with e-assessment, design and implementation choices, affordances offered by e-assessment tools, and mathematical skills. Groups with soluble minimax conjugate classes of subgroups

A classical result of Neumann characterizes the groups in which each subgroup has finitely many conjugates only as central-by-finite groups. If $\mathfrak{X}$ is a class of groups, a group $G$ is said to have $\mathfrak{X}$-conjugate classes of subgroups if $G/core_G(N_G(H)) \in \mathfrak{X}$ for each subgroup $H$ of $G$. Here we study groups which have soluble minimax conjugate classes of subgroups, giving a description in terms of $G/Z(G)$. We also characterize $FC$-groups which have soluble minimax conjugate classes of subgroups.
History teaching in Finnish general upper secondary schools: Objectives and practices

In Finland, the trend towards a new kind of history teaching emphasizing the understanding of historical knowledge and historical thinking skills began in the mid-1990s, when history teaching objectives were defined much more broadly in the curriculum than previously. In this article, we examine how, in over twenty years since the changes in curriculum objectives were made, general upper secondary school teachers have come to value the curriculum objectives of history teaching and how these have impacted on their teaching. Incidence of enterotoxigenic staphylococci and their toxins in foods

Of 504 food samples collected from cafeterias, 19 (3.8%) yielded strains of enterotoxigenic staphylococci, and 10 (52.6%), 4 (21.1%), 3 (15.8%), and 2 (10.5%) of these strains produced enterotoxins C (SEC), D (SED), B (SEB), and A (SEA), respectively. Moreover, SEA, SEB, and SEC were isolated from three hamburger samples. Of 181 food samples collected from four restaurants before the implementation of the hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) system, 7 (3.9%) were found to contain enterotoxigenic strains, and SED, SEC, and SEA were produced by 4 (57.1%), 2 (28.6%), and 1 (14.3%) of these strains, respectively.
