Adapting and Validating the Collegiate Learning Assessment to Measure Generic Academic Skills of Students in Germany: Implications for International …
2018
Starting in 2015, a German research team from the program Modeling and Measuring Competencies in Higher Education (KoKoHs), in collaboration with the US Council for Aid to Education (CAE), adapted and validated the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA+) for the German language and cultural context to measure generic higher-order cognitive skills of university students and graduates in Germany. In this chapter, the conceptual and methodological background, the framework of the adaptation and validation study, as well as preliminary results are presented. Finally, findings are discussed critically, and future challenges and perspectives are explored.
Performance Measurement and Outperformance Tests
2017
This chapter explains how to evaluate the performance of a trading strategy and how to carry out a statistical test of the hypothesis that a moving average trading strategy outperforms the corresponding buy-and-hold strategy. In particular, it argues that there is no unique performance measure, reviews the most popular performance measures, and points to the limitations of these measures. The chapter then surveys the parametric methods of testing the outperformance hypothesis and the current “state of the art” non-parametric methods.
Evaluating a Technology-Based Assessment (TBA) to Measure Teachers’ Action-Related and Reflective Skills
2019
Teaching performance can be assessed validly only if the assessment involves an appropriate, authentic representation of real-life teaching practices. Different skills interact in coordinating teac...
Essential oils as natural additives to prevent oxidation reactions in meat and meat products: A review
2018
Oxidation reactions during manufacturing, distribution, and storage of meat and meat products result in undesirable physicochemical changes and aromas, which leads to detrimental effects on the product quality. This could be translated into the consumer dissatisfaction and economic loss. One of the most common practices to overcome this issue is the incorporation of synthetic antioxidants. However, the increasing health-consciousness of consumers and their preference for natural additives leads to the search of natural alternatives to synthetic antioxidants. A number of essential oils have strong antioxidant properties and are explored as potential alternatives to chemical antioxidants in t…
The European contribution to the development and validation activities for the design of IFMIF lithium facility
2013
The International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) is an accelerator-driven intense neutron source where candidate materials for fusion reactors will be tested and validated. The high energy neutron flux is produced by means of two deuteron beams (total current of 250 mA, energy of 40 MeV) that strikes a liquid lithium target circulating in a lithium loop of IFMIF plant. The European (EU) contribution to the development of the lithium facility comprises five procurement packages, as follow: (1) participation to the experimental activities of the EVEDA lithium test loop in Oarai (Japan); (2) study aimed at evaluating the corrosion and erosion phenomena, promoted by lithium, for …
Impact of physicians’ participation in non-interventional post-marketing studies on their prescription habits: A retrospective 2-armed cohort study i…
2020
Background Non-interventional post-marketing studies (NIPMSs) sponsored by pharmaceutical companies are controversial because, while they are theoretically useful instruments for pharmacovigilance, some authors have hypothesized that they are merely marketing instruments used to influence physicians’ prescription behavior. So far, it has not been shown, to our knowledge, whether NIPMSs actually do have an influence on prescription behavior. The objective of this study was therefore to investigate whether physicians’ participation in NIPMSs initiated by pharmaceutical companies has an impact on their prescription behavior. In addition, we wanted to analyze whether specific characteristics of…
Assessment, Evaluation, and Research
2016
This chapter explores the best practices and resources for adopting assessment and evaluation strategies and practices across countries.
Valid Competency Assessment in Higher Education
2017
The aim of the 15 collaborative projects conducted during the new funding phase of the German research program Modeling and Measuring Competencies in Higher Education—Validation and Methodological Innovations (KoKoHs) is to make a significant contribution to advancing the field of modeling and valid measurement of competencies acquired in higher education. The KoKoHs research teams assess generic competencies and domain-specific competencies in teacher education, social and economic sciences, and medicine based on findings from and using competency models and assessment instruments developed during the first KoKoHs funding phase. Further, they enhance, validate, and test measurement approa…
PERFORMANCE OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION IN LATVIA IN DEVELOPING EMPLOYABILITY OF GRADUATES
2019
As the labour market changes at increasing pace, education systems need to respond. Facilitating employability of graduates and preparing them for lifelog learning and constant changes throughout their careers requires new education methods. In order to assess the current approach to developing employability of graduates in vocational education in Latvia, this article aims at evaluating the attitudes of employers on performance of vocational education in developing employability competencies, as well as investigating the practical education methods applied by vocational education institutions to facilitate employability.Total 750 companies participated in this research. A list of 17 employa…
